May pickups

1 Attachment(s)
I'll kick off May with a cool baseball ticket pickup.
Last night I purchased an Indians ticket with major Bob Feller significance, but so much happened in this game that really there's something for everyone that loves baseball...

1940 was a breakout year for Rapid Robert. He began the year by pitching MLB's 1st and only Opening Day no-hitter. On September 22, 1940 Feller put an exclamation point on what would certainly be one of his two best career years (the other being 1946) by winning his 27th and final game (career high).
To top it off he also homered in the game, hitting career HR # 2/8.

In 1940 Feller led the AL in virtually every category:
Bob Feller Pitching Record 1940 (Led AL in BOLD)
Year Team G GS CG SHO GF SV IP W L ERA

1940 CLE A 43 37 31 4 5 4 320.1 27 11 2.61

I mentioned that this game had something for everyone. The Indians defeated their perennial AL rival the Tigers. This game featured a literal bevvy of homers by both teams.
7 players actually homered in the game including HOF'ers Bob Feller, Hank Greenberg and "The Mechanical Man" Charlie Gehringer.
Check out the box score below. It was a crazy cool game!

I am the excited about this collection of early Princeton baseball uniforms belonging to Richard S. Hendey, who played Varsity from 1928-1930. Collection highlighted by his varsity uniform. Purchased from his granddaughter.

Here is one pic, with a link below to more pics and other items, and more of his story.

(Our good friend Keith Javic also picked up some nice pieces from this Hendey collection.)

No I really did pick up a Jackson gamer. He plays in the Rangers minor league system.

UnVme7 05-01-2015 07:37 PM

He is, in fact, related to the great Joe Jackson who he was named after.

Crosley Field Night Sticks

Just picked up two wonderful 1930s Cincinnati Reds game used bats. The players are Billy Myers and Babe Herman. Most folks might say, nice... not thrilling but nice. For my collection these are rather significant in that Myers collected the first base hit in a major league night game and also scored the first run (24 May 1935; Crosley Field). Babe Herman hit the first home run during a major league night game (10 July 1935; Crosley Field).

Finally crossed this beauty off the want-list, with a big assist from Bob F...

WillowGrove 05-05-2015 06:39 AM

Mark that is a beauty.

GaryPassamonte 05-05-2015 11:15 AM

Mark- When was that produced and how many are there?

perezfan 05-05-2015 12:15 PM

Peter:
Thanks :)

Gary:
Early to mid 1890s time-frame. Another net54 member PM'd me, stating he'd seen this very Pairpoint item featured on an 1894 Silver Catalogue. Still searching for that catalogue image, but safe to say the timing is correct.

As to scarcity, it's pretty darned rare. There was one in REA about 7-8 years ago, and Hunts has perhaps had one or two. There was another on ebay roughly 4 years ago, but the seller wanted 2 - 3 times its actual worth, and I doubt it ever sold. The only other one I've seen had an arm that was broken off, but it still sold for close to 4 figures.

It's worth noting that the same pillbox-hatted figural player was also featured on a few other Pairpoint Silver pieces of the era. I actually have the matching Thermometer, and have also seen this figural atop an ornate 1890s Baseball Trophy. So it's a very nice piece to pick up, if you're into this type of thing...

Wow Bob! Beautiful piece... looks far better here than on ebay.

Someone took great care of that one... no tarnish, dents, etc. Just gorgeous!

Beautiful stuff guys

Congratulations on an amazing addition and bargain Bob:D

Congratulations Mark!!! I'm so pleased you found that beautiful piece. It is well suited to your amazing collection my friend:)

I didn't "Brock" it.... but got a pretty decent buy.

Where the hell has Brock been anyway? I miss his posts and outrageous deals.

Bob and Mark those are beautiful items:eek:

It's unlikely I ill ever own a 1971 World Series ring but I will settle for this tie and cufflink set awarded to Pirate players and front office staff. I also picked up my first photo in quite awhile. I just thought it was a cool 1948 opening day Joe D. image. He is one of the few players who could make a slide look like a posed shot. Not a hair out of place...Joe D. was the epitome of 1940s cool.

Congrats Mark! And at a pretty fair price I may add. It went for less than the one I consigned to Hunts a few years back.

GKreindler 05-06-2015 07:09 AM

LOVE that shot of DiMaggio, Mike! That sweeping motion of the slide from left to right is absolutely killer.

May Pickups

I had an exciting week of pickups, after not adding much to my collection for a while. First I upgraded to a much larger, nicer display case. Then added a very rare 1949 Eagles game used helmet. Lastly, I picked up a 1980 NFC Champions pendant/brooch with matching cufflinks.

Teamgluck 05-07-2015 09:03 AM

What an impressive display! I love the vintage game used helmets which are becoming very popular right now. To bad you chose the wrong Pennsylvania team :p

One sub theme in my advanced Nolan Ryan collection is to find the game used bat of every catcher that was involved in a significant career pitching milestone(s).
Once I find the bat I have had the catcher sign and inscribe their game used bat- ex. Jeff Torborg 1000th strikeout and 1st no-hitter catcher, etc.
Since most of his catchers are fairly obscure, finding a game used bat for these guys has proven to be very challenging...

Some of you that know me may have noticed that I have occasionally posted on the BST looking for a Mark Bailey bat.

This is a collecting theme that I have chased since I first got the idea in the early 1990's. I have been successful at finding a game used bat for each of these milestone catchers. The last game used bat that I needed to get signed was catcher Mark Bailey of the Houston Astros. Bailey is not a common signer, so I sent him a letter letting him know what I was working on and asked if he would sign & inscribe his game used bat. He immediately responded and said he would be glad to do it for me.

This is where things got interesting...
In 2006 I sent Bailey a really nice example of his H & B game used bat along with return postage and a very nice thank you letter.
The interesting thing is that the bat was cleverly corked (ala Slammin' Sammy Sosa).
I noted that the end had been drilled out, substance inserted (cork or ?) and the end was patched up, repainted (in black) and his uni # 6 was written over the end. Of course I made no mention of this when I sent him the bat.
Long story short, he never returned the bat even after I sent him two additional letters, one containing $$. No bat.

It's taken me 9 years to find another one, but mission accomplished.
Needless to say, I will not be sending him this one. It's a nice bat with excellent use. No cork this time though. :p ;)

vintagesportscollector 05-07-2015 03:25 PM

That's a fascinating story Scott. I wonder if Bailey still has the bat or if he burned the incriminating evidence. I bet those who corked their bats use to keep close tabs on them, so he had properly been wondering what happened to that bat for years. ;)

Thanks Clint. The white - green wing helmet is on one of my mannequins. That mannequin is wearing a 1969 Gary Ballman game used jersey, and a pair of 1969 to 1971 Eagles game worn pants.

I got home today just in time to see the mailman coming down the street.
He delivered something I have been wanting for a long time - a Joe Torre game issued bat (I say issued because the seller pointed out that it didn't show much signs of use). So I am guessing it was one in the rack, or maybe he took a few swings with it at the most.
But it looks awesome in my Torre collection.

Snagged this McGwire bat from the Robert Edwards Auction. I rarely can afford anything in their catalog but they made a mistake in their listing. They said since the knob was signed "sack" they assumed it was used by another player. But even though the public liked to call him "Big Mac", his teammates called him "sack". Not a well known fact. Bat shows tons of use, not cracked and is signed. Comeback year of 1992.

AWESOME pickup!!! Loved Big Mac, another true beast. I know I know, but watching him hit was a thing of beauty in the late 90's. Whenever you watched him he'd hit a home run. Every time!

Looks to be another amazing month for great pickups. Really enjoy seeing Bobs and Marks figural pieces. Congrats to both!

Ive never come across either of these pieces. (Doesnt mean others have not ;)) The first is a cast metal bank about 6 inches tall. The Pinch Hit tobacco advertising piece is an impressive 56" long by 26" tall. Fantastic colors on this one that really pop. Apparently it was found rolled up in a paper collection that hasnt been touched in the past 40 - 50 years. Im glad to add both of these to my collection! :)

Picked this up yesterday at an antique shop. I'm not sure if it was used as a bat rack or not but I will be displaying my bats on it. It differs from other bat racks I've seen. What does everyone think? It measures about 74inches high.

ruth-gehrig 05-10-2015 08:31 AM

Ron looks like a great space saving bat rack. Should sit flat against a wall nicely. Are than any pegs other than at the top?

eastonfalcon19 05-10-2015 08:36 AM

Yes there are pegs all the way down on both sides. It will sit nice against the wall.
