Morphy's Postcard Auction

I just now bid live on some nice Postcards in a Morphy's Live- Online auction. Won a few. Anyone else? There seemed to be a lot of competition.

glynparson 10-26-2014 08:22 AM

I was at Morphy's

last week looking at them ( it's about 20 minutes from my house). Not anything I "needed" at this time, but a lot of cool post cards. Prices as usual for Morphy's auctions seemed rather strong. Of course PC are not my niche.

I was on the phone live bidding, won about 6 lots according to the bidding online and the lady on the phone with me, but I have a feeling they are going to pull several of the wins. Right now I am only seeing 2 lower end wins. I know I was high bidder on the Matty, at the end, but maybe they didn't want to sell it after all? That is the only drawback on these types of auctions. Ya' really never know if you win, even when the system/they say you do.

Edited to add- Just called and it seems the phone live bidding isn't updated as quickly but the lots I won are still won..... :)

Could be....lot's of things churning about what to focus on next.....

Won three items, but had to bid ahead of the auction (couldn't do it live due to soccer game). I'll be curious to see the hammer on the Matty! I put a pretty aggressive bid on it (or so I think).

Bicem 10-26-2014 09:14 AM

I suggest t206. :)

btcarfagno 10-26-2014 09:15 AM

I got one that I found interesting and was underbidder on several. The one I won was a RPPC of a local team with the letters "F A G" across their chests. It amused me.

Morphy's

I believe I was the underbidder on both the Cobb and Mathewson but did pick up lot 635 the 1908 St Louis Browns PC

Bicem 10-26-2014 11:09 AM

What did you win Leon?

The Matty, an Alexander and a few other lessers..... honestly, these will be for resale eventually. While I am chin deep in type collecting I don't see me going hog wild into postcards. I only consider that I have one now (the Cobb with favorite bat) as it goes with the Azora panel with the same pose. I don't see me starting to collect them very soon, if I ever decide to. Some of them are gorgeous though. I like the one you got at the National as much as almost any I have seen.

I stopped bidding at 1K on the Cobb (the juice was a factor) missed on that and won the Lajoie. There were some strong bids coming from the floor in this auction, lots if fun.

bobbvc 10-26-2014 02:25 PM

Anyone here win lot 639?

What does the "F A G" stand for? I collect the T210 Ft Worth players because the "F T W" on their chests amuse me.

You guys need to bring this stuff up BEFORE the auction ends :D. Never knew about this group of postcards, too late to bid now.........

BTW if anyone viewed the postcards in person, were there any significant Cuban/Negro postcards?

Jaybird 10-26-2014 03:54 PM

There was one grouping that had the George Wilson Manitowoc PC. Went for about the price of that card but there were other town teams in the grouping.

There were a couple of prison RPPCs with people of color but nothing much else. The major leagues were well represented but not the Cuban or NL.

glynparson 10-26-2014 04:28 PM

Jason

is correct. I viewed them in person twice over the last month. did not notice any negro league or cuban post cards.

bcbgcbrcb 10-26-2014 05:12 PM

Thanks, guys. Now I don't feel so bad that I missed the auction:o

there were a few postcards I had never seen before, like some of the '26 St. Louis Cardinals Team PC's. They definitely sold for much more than I was willing to go. Leon, my pre-auction bid was exactly the same as your winning bid for the Matty. I think you got a heck of a deal on that card! Gorgeous!

I picked this one up and am quite pleased, although admittedly, it too will probably be for resale:

And I think I was the under bidder on this Hornsby you showed. It's a cool card. For some reason I can't seem to locate any previous sales of a PC758 Matty but I am sure there are some....any help would be appreciated.

The Pinkerton should be pretty easy to value and subtract out...

This was how I did my fuzzy math before the auction began (using the 2008 REA sale that Jeff provided).
