Trying to figure out couple signatures on a ball.
This ball is supposedly signed by both 1960's Pirates and Yankees team. Trying to figure out the couple of signatures on this side of the panel. This is the East Panel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../teamball2.jpg This is what I got so far I think. 1. Roger Maris (Yankees) 2. Roberto Clemente (Pirates) 3. Valmy Thomas (Phillies) 4. "Best Wishes", probably from Frank Thomas since same pen color. 5. Frank Thomas (Pirates) 6. Dick Groat (Pirates) 7. Dick Schofield (Pirates) 8. Gene Conley (Phillies) 9. Whitey Ford (Yankees) Thanks |
#4 is Best Wishes, who played center field for the...ummm... :D
And #8 looks like Gene Conley, though that doesn't fit the Pirates/Yankees scenario. |

And #3 is Valmy Thomas
Both Thomas and Conley were on the 1959 Phillies, but I'm not sure how that fits in with the other sigs. |
Valmy Thomas and Gene Conley.

I guess this ball got couple phillies on there too! That was quick, thanks for the help guys! I got couple panels to play with now. |
Here is another panel. North Panel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../teamball3.jpg 1.Bill Stafford (Yankees) 2. Roy Face (Pirates) 3. Yogi Berra (Yankees) 4. Bob Friend (Pirates) 5. Dick Sisler 6. Clete Boyer (Yankees) 7. Hal Smith (Pirates) 8. Elston Howard (Yankees) |
I think #7 is Hal Smith (pirates) and # 5 Dick Stuart?
|
#2 Elroy (Roy) Face
#5 Dick Sisler #6 Clete Boyer |
#2 Elroy Face.
|
#7 Hal Smith?
|
wow, you guys are good. It is kind of fun. Its like a puzzle. Thanks guy. Not sure how you guys figure out the Sisler and Boyer since its kind of faded. Think I will post the other panels later to see I can map the whole ball.

Far from it, but I've had a lot of team-signed balls that were much more faded than yours. Just calling them as I see them, and no guarantees on authenticity :)
Generally, if you can narrow down the teams/years, you can look at the rosters on baseball-reference.com for the ones you can only make out a few letters of and narrow it down by process of elimination. Sometimes all you can make out is a first and last letter, but when you see the name in the list, you have that "aha" moment and the rest becomes clearer. Then you can compare to known signatures of those players to double check and be sure. That's my usual process anyway. Sometimes using a black light can help to pick out the really faded ones as well. Good luck with the rest! |
This might be the toughest of all the panels, South Panel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../teamball4.jpg 1. Jack Meyer 2. Harvey Haddix (Pirates) 3. Bob Skinner (Pirates) 4. Vinegar Bend Mizell (Pirates) 5. Hector Lopez (Yankees) 6. Jim Coates (Yankees) 7. Gene Baker (Pirates) 8. Gil McDougald (Yankees) 9. Moose Skowron (Yankees) side. Don Hoak (Pirates) |
#8 Gil McDougald. Below McDougald looks a bit like Moose Skowron

Not positive but number 4 may be Vinegar Bend Mizell.

Here is the north panel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../teamball5.jpg 1. Diomedes Olivo (Pirates) 2. Smoky Burgess (Pirates) 3. Spud Murray 4. Dale Long (Yankees) 5. Bill Virdon (Pirates) 6. Ted Kluszewski 7. Rocky Nelson (Pirates) 8. Gino Cimoli (Pirates) |
South Panel #5 might be Harvey Haddix?
According to the JSA there are H.Haddix, J. Meyer, and S. Murray. Which I haven't found yet. |

Thanks for the helps guys. I almost got all the signatures on the ball. Will show the last two panels.
Sweet spot http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../teamball1.jpg 1. Mickey Mantle (Yankees) 2. Bill Mazeroski (Pirates) 3. Joe Garagiola Label http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../teamball6.jpg 1. Vern Law (Pirates) 2. 1960 |
Looks like Vern Law above 1960

number 3 - hard to see the whole name but first name looks kind of like Spud so it might be Spud Murray (batting practice pitcher).

Is that the north panel you are referring to? |
Looks like Joe Garagiola to me

I am just missing two signatures. Thanks all.

#1 looks like it could be intended to be Casey Stengel, but abbreviated to "Ca Steng". That's just going out on a limb based on the letters I see there though, as it doesn't look like any Stengel sig I've ever seen. Your other missing sig, between the angle, the stamping it's written over, and the light signature, I can't even make out enough to hazard a guess. |
Thank you all for your help. I have now completed this puzzle. :)
