The seller sees more of a resemblance than I do.

Looks more like shoeless Joe:)

Beautiful image, great bat, but not John McGraw. Interesting that when anybody does lengthy research on an early photo, the end result is the player is always a Hall of Famer. Rarely does one come to the conclusion that after much research I believe it is just some unidentifiable amateur.

"If that's John McGraw I'm a ringtailed monkey. "
"Of course its not and leave your family out of this"

barrysloate 11-24-2012 02:27 PM

Groucho?:)

joeadcock 11-24-2012 02:51 PM

Agreed. Seems like a stretch on John M.

Here's the cabinet photo in question followed by an 1894 photo and another early 1890's photo...........

I wasn't able to match the B on any of the Baltimore team photos I found online. I don't think its a Major League uniform or player.

Bicem 11-24-2012 05:44 PM

call me crazy but I think it does kinda look like him, based on the photo Phil posted.

I didn't think this would be needed, but I guess it is. This is the classic attached vs. detached earlobe. That is all you need. The overall ear shape is also very different.

This is another case of someone just finding an old photo, assigning a famous name to it and hoping someone will bite.

If you're not too good with the shape matching analytical approach, try thinking of it this way. See if you can find another known McGraw photo that isn't immediately obviously him. I've never seen one that isn't. If the photo in question isn't equally obvious, forget about it and save your money.

Those ears look like ears to me:)

The eyes are wrong, that's what tipped me off. The fellow in the cabinet has light eyes, likely blue. Muggsy's syes are brown and look very dark in the classic images of him.

Bicem 11-25-2012 08:04 AM

like I said, definitely not him. :o

esd10 11-27-2012 03:08 PM

i had looked closer and i agree that its not mcgraw and the uniform is wrong also from the research i have done.

h2oya311 11-27-2012 08:08 PM

Thanks for the info guys

I was looking too, and was hoping there would be some discussion on net54. Glad to see there was!

I think it is a Baltimore player since the photographer is a "prominent" Baltimore photographer w/ other Baltimore subjects and photos. Additionally, I thought it was interesting that the player is left handed ( at least according to the pose).

Regardless, I agree it's not McGraw. Nice piece either way.

Not NcGraw, Not a Baltimore Major League Player, a $100 cabinet that someone got smoked for at $1500

Amazing!

Absolutely stunning bid for a cabinet of an unknown player. Nobody did their homework on this one.

I wouldn't say "nobody" did their homework...I did some homework, and so did a few others on this board...suffice it to say, we did not bid. A few sorry folks did not do their homework...apparently the dog ate it.

Point well taken Derek. What I should have said is none of the high bidders did their homework.
