Wow Jimmy, the Type 1 of Lou is super - love the pose and smile. And the Beatles display box and pins -how do you ever find this stuff? This portion of your collection is growing well past world class!!!

Geez Jimmy, you said you got a type 1 of The Captain, but I don't see Jeter in that photo anywhere :D:D . Seriously, that's a great photo and I too would like to know where the heck you find all of the Beatles stuff.

What a GREAT photo of Gehrig used for his 1961 golden press card. Truly a fantastic shot!

The MINTY Beatles stuff you have acquired is second to none that I have seen. Lots of Beatles stuff out there but you somehow find the rarest stuff in the highest condition. That is a pretty good combination I would say!

Great way to start the month!

It is hard to believe we are almost to the midway part of the year. I have added a couple more TYPE 1 Photos to my collection below.

A). Roger Maris’ 61st HR taken by Olen. It is very interesting that Olen shot it from the rafters as he could have had any pick of a seat as a yankee photographer. I truly believe this is one of the greatest images of this historic day and am VERY happy to have added it to “The Vault”.

B). Gehrig portrait used for his 1941 memorial day ticket as well as the memorial at Yankee stadium. Definitely a defining portrait of Lou. It has some emulsion on his chin but for some reason it doesn't bother me as much as maybe it should. Perhaps it is because it is 1 of 3 examples known and didn't cost me 8k. :)

I agree.. Old pennants are so neat. I collected them as a child. My father would bring one back for me on every business trip he took. When we took family trips to ballparks and/or vacations I would also pick one up whether it be Yankee stadium or Yellowstone park. I would love to get into them but just can't collect everything. They are beautiful pieces for sure...congrats!!

This may have become the favorite item in my collection, definitely top 5. I'm a huge Brooks Robinson and Orioles fan. Although this isn't a game used jersey, it is about as close as you can get. It's a 1971 salesmen sample set complete with pants.

baseball cigarette holder
 

picked this up on the net for 12 bucks. Listed as a toy but it really is a cigarette holder from the 1910s to 20 which says short stop on the side and stitched around the ball. Its either bakelite or some other resin. c.p.f. was a pipe manufacturer from ny. great unused little piece.

This is cool!! Is it a cig holder or a pipe for...? Where does the cig go into??

Thanks for the nice comments. I now have seven of the known nine premiums. The Alexander just sold in the legendary auction, and the only known cobb sold in the 1999 Halper auction and hasn't surfaced since then.

So the premiums are larger right?? If there are only 9 of them, gosh I would think they would go for even more than they did. Perhaps now that we all know this, they will next time! The Cobb would be the cat's ass! I was actually going to ask you if there were any cobbs, joe jacksons, matty's, wagners etc.. They are beutiful. Are those original photos attached?

Completely original and perfect working order.

This is an 1897 woodcut printing block used for publication of a newspaper [haven't figured out which one yet] showing Jim Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons, who fought for the heavyweight title. Note the names are backwards on the block--it was a direct transfer print [ink goes on the surface then right onto the paper]. The wood is hardwood and the printing surface is heavily crazed from the chemicals used to create the print.

there is a hole in the baseball that fits the cig perfectly. its only a little over 2 3/4" long. thats probably why its short stop.There was one that sold in 2007 but dont know for how much.

What a great pickup and picture! What is that machine called and what year was it manufactured?

I love items like this...parts of "the process". What a neat artifact! Congrats! How much does something like this cost someone/retail?

That's a very good question, Ben, one I cannot answer. I got it at what I feel was a bargain price because the seller described it as a reversed print on wood rather than as a printing block.

Picked up this ball today, signed by the 1930 Ontario Senior League Champs The Galt Terriers(Canada). Seems like a 1928-1932 Spalding Heydler ball with Reg. In Canada on it. Do these balls have similar value to the American equivalent?

I was thrilled to pick up this one for my photo collection today. Type 1 image of Hank Aaron and Charlie Grimm taken at Hank's Rookie season spring training.

And to Clint, Bob, and Adam... some stellar pick-ups Gents. That Brooks uni is KILLER Clint! I never knew that there were salesman samples for uniforms. Just how cool is that!

And Bob, what a terrific machine and even better photo of your son checking it out! It looks like many memories will be formed from some father and son games played at that very machine!

Another great pick-up for you Adam. Your restoration Exhibit machine was sensational and these woodcuts are simply historic, especially for such a huge Boxing collector like yourself!

Must be a very early photo of Aaron, he doesn't even have a number on his jersey yet.

It was taken at spring training in his rookie year. However, Jimmy sent me a PM and it appears that based on the UPI stamping it is likely a restrike printed for the 1958 World Series making it a Type 2. Oh well at the price I paid I am not out very much money:o.

Picked up this c1864 engraving on eBay this afternoon... titled "FOOT BALL" in the original frame.....It's a monster at 43" wide x 24" tall...I actually have a copy that needs framed and a little restoration...but this one's framed and ready to go on the wall.

This arrived in yesterday's mail. I'm really excited about this piece. It's a 1964 TOPPS 'Case' shipping box (with the orig shipping label still affixed) that was home to 24 boxes of The Beatles 2nd Series Wax Packs. Hard to imagine any others surviving the last 48 years, but I'm sure glad this one did!

Picked up a nice Joe Jackson Clark Griffith bat.

Don't own much of anything other than cards, but picked this up on ebay since it had the set of 12 cards including the Babe Ruth/Tom Mix card.

Matt - very nice bat - I bowed out at about $2200

This piece was featured in another thread titles 1906 mirror. It never met reserve on ebay, so the owner an I agreed on a price. It belonged to his great Aunt in Chicago. I love it:D

Where did the Jackson bat sell?

Wow Dan, that was a sweet haul of pictures! Mike, I agree with Dan as I too have always liked those mirrors. I believe they are way under appreciated for the era they were made. Matt sweet Jackson bat. Congrats guys.

And Dan, what a fantastic follow up to your epic find of just a couple weeks ago! Those are some great images there. You've had quite a year and it ain't even half over yet!

Here are a couple of my most recent pick-ups. The First Sports Agent (and Babe was his first client!) Christy Walsh's brief professional autobiography entitled "Adios to Ghost" (regarding all the newspapermen he hired to ghostwrite stories for Ruth and many of the top players from that era) These were self published and consequently, are quite scarce. The few that I've seen have all been gifted and inscribed by Walsh. However, this example has a bonus... Walsh (whom was also a cartoonist) penned a terrific scene centered around the larger than life Bambino...

And I was very surprised when I came across this extremely rare 1968 Beatles/Yellow Submarine Candy Cigarettes empty box. Yellow Submarine Novelties made in England pale in comparison to their American counterparts, so finding this little gem was a huge find... for me anyway. ;)

Hi Carlton, that's really great detective work on the football print and a beautiful 'Renegades' print! There have been a handful of this particular Prang baseball print that have sold at different auction houses over the past few years. I actually picked this one up on ebay and it is truly a beautiful piece. The print itself measures 21.5" x 14.5" and is framed out to ~30" x 24". Overall, it's in great condition with some toning but no tears. There has been some speculation that the player sliding into second base is King Kelly. I think there's another more well known (and more expensive) chromolithograph print by Prang which includes Anson.
