site was down for a little while

The site was just down for a little while. I am working with the hosting company to find out if they can provide "good" service and not just (lip) service.

I was worried there for a moment

Happens to most sites, even facebook and eBay.

I thought my computer at work was messed up, I restarted it like 3 times lol

sycks22 03-20-2012 12:33 PM

I was hoping it wasn't my old work computer. What else are teacher's supposed to do during training days?

LOL.....that's funny.

On a positive note I am looking into getting us on our own dedicated server. I got the same ole line of crap from the hosting company. "Too many customers on the same server and it was over-loaded". I never freaking told them I wanted to be on a congested server in the first place.

bigjaco 03-20-2012 03:19 PM

Leon, have you looked into AWS (Amazon Web Services)?

I found it to be cheaper, easier and much more scalable then a dedicated box.

The company we use to host this site is/was one recommended by our s/w manufacturer, Vbulletin. I think they will do fine once we get on our own server. IF that doesn't work, or we have many more issues, I will get a hold of the folks at Amazon. Not sure how you can be more scalable than a dedicated server? Our little site probably doesn't require a lot of bandwidth.

bigjaco 03-20-2012 04:06 PM

AWS uses cloud based virtual machine which you can clone or spin up reserve instances as the site requires. So a dedicated machine has fixed resources (memory, processors, bandwidth) the advantage of cloud virtual machines is you can scale automatically by demand and only pay for the resources you use.

I switched from dedicated to AWS and will save 40% on my hosting.

I understand. For the last 21 yrs I have sold technology and am Citrix, VMware, HP, EMC, IBM, MS sales etc....certified. When I talk about a dedicated machine I am not speaking of a stand alone box I am speaking of a dedicated VM server (session). best regards

bigjaco 03-20-2012 04:35 PM

I knew you were a multi-facetted nerd. I just switched to AWS very happy I did so. Worth checking out, but sounds like you have it on lock-down.

MCT, MCITP, multi MCTS here. :-)

again

The site has been down again today. My apologies. To reiterate, we are on a server that has many other domains/sites on it. It is a bandwidth issue. Yesterday I made a fairly substantial investment for us to be on our own cloud server. Hopefully within the next week we will be fully moved over. After that the hosting company says we should not have these issues again and our site should be faster too. My biggest pet peeve about websites is slowness or being down. I have also paid for a hard copy back up to be sent to me on DVD....so if anything ever explodes I will have a full copy of our site on a dvd and it can be retrieved, though it might take a few days. Once again my apologies. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks Leon for your commitment!!

Clark7781 03-29-2012 08:24 PM

Leon, for the amount of money we all pay per month to use this site, you really should be ashamed of yourself! How dare it go down for even on milli-second!

Of COURSE I'm just kidding. Never look a gift horse in the mouth. This is your baby and you graciously let us play in your sandbox. Thank you for giving this to us!

Leon,
Thank you for putting up with all of the headaches that are associated with maintaining and moderating this site. I appreciate the interesting info and the free BST.

again and again...

Hey Folks
Just a quick note to let ya'll know that I am very, very well aware the site has been up and down like a cheap Who** lately. Again, I apologize. I am chewing the hosting company a new behind but the migration to our own server is in their court. I have definitely let them know that if it doesn't get fixed soon they will lose my business. The new, better service has been paid for, for several days now. You can email me when and if we go down to see if there is any new news, but generally I am as in the dark as everyone else.

shammus 04-02-2012 03:13 PM

Thanks Leon...appreciate you being proactive in getting us a new hosting service. Not sure why it's been so bad lately. I don't remember it ever being as bad as it's been the past week or so. Seems like it goes down for a few hours each day almost.

bcbgcbrcb 04-02-2012 03:15 PM

Thank you very much, Leon, for all of your efforts, they are much appreciated!

To be clear it is a new service, ie.. our own cloud server, but it is the same company. It is one of the largest hosting companies I am aware of. They bought out the one we were using. The new one is IOmart. .......we were using Global Gold....all that being said once we get on our own server we really shouldn't have anymore issues.

You posted, so "no" at the moment.....but otherwise "yes", this hosting company has some nice emails from me too. I just got off the phone with another hosting company as I am researching other solutions. I guess it's not as easy as it sounds. The one I just spoke to was called "The Planet" located in Dallas...they just got bought by Softlayer and according to the guy on the phone they do great at hardware but wouldn't be a good fit as they do 0 for any part of the set up. Still searching.

and bad tornadoes in Dallas but mostly South Dallas so far...and I am in very far north Dallas...maybe 30-40 miles from the tornadoes.....but ya'll will see some real doozies on the news. There are 18 wheelers that look like they have sprouted wings and are flying all over the place, until they crash down.

barrysloate 04-03-2012 02:34 PM

Several times between 3:30-4:00 I tried to get on and got the same blank screen. Maybe it was down for only a few minutes....or it was my computer.

No, it was the site. It's really been poor the last 5-6 days, including today.

once again

Sorry for the site issues again. If they can keep us up long enough we will be changing hosting companies. Think of buying a car and having a ton of problems out of the block. Then the mfg says they can't fix them (or worse yet, they don't know how). You go to another car. We will be moving hosting companies and I am starting the process today. I don't mind if I eat the monies paid I don't want to use this company, Global Gold hosting, anymore. More updates later. I just want everyone to know this is not going to continue.....at least with the current UK based company. My apologies once again.

greenmonster66 04-17-2012 06:04 AM

Actually had go to bed early last night due to not getting on :-(

And for a bit of levity, a few Lucas jokes.....(Lucas had part in making many of the British automobiles and other electrics...., and have been known for reliability issues). I thought some might enjoy these. Also, I am making some headway on the hosting situation. The goal is to change hosts asap with as few issues as possible.

Lucas Jokes
Why didn't the Germans bomb the Lucas plants during WWII? The Germans considered Lucas an ally.
The Lucas motto: "Get home before dark."
"And the Lord said 'let there be light'...Joseph Lucas replied 'no way, Lord, no way'."
Lucas denies having invented darkness. But they still claim "sudden, unexpected darkness".
Lucas--inventor of the first intermittent wiper.
Lucas--inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
The three-position Lucas switch--DIM, FLICKER and OFF. The other three switch settings--SMOKE, SMOLDER and IGNITE.
The original anti-theft devices--Lucas Electric products.
"I've had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob..."
If Lucas made guns, wars would not start either.
Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank.
It's not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm's Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance.
Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner "How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?" "He replied, it doesn't matter which one you use, nothing happens!"
Back in the '70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn't suck.
Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So he made the wires longer.
Why do the English drink warm beer? Lucas made the refrigerators, too.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone. Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb. Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit.
Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: check the position of the stars, kill a chicken and walk three times clockwise around your car chanting: "Oh mighty Prince of Darkness protect your unworthy servant."
Lucas systems actually uses AC current; it just has a random frequency.
Lucas is an acronym for Loose Unsoldered Connections and Splices.
In the 1980's Lucas tried to get into the newly burgeoning PC market, but they discontinued the product when they couldn make it leak oil.
Why are there no skyscrapers in London? Lucas makes elevators
Lucas Factory motto, put in a good day's work then home before dark.
Why is there no death penalty in England? Lucas makes electric chairs.

Rawn

You are welcome Rawn. And a quick update. I have just made a management decision, with the help of the SimpleAuctionSite folks, and have gone with the hosting company they use. It's a done deal and the migration is to follow. The goal is to get this done within 2 days, before I go out of town for the weekend. That goal might be a bit ambitious but I have already paid for the new service and the migration. I also want to thank Chris Bro.wne for his help, Brian Mc.Queen for his help and especially Steve Freed.man for his recommendation and support in this process. There will be more info coming shortly. Thanks for everyone's patience. It has been a harrowing experience but I think I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope it isn't a train coming straight at me. :)
