Ridiculous.

WOW, there is an even funnier listing on e-bay this morning for an early-life photo of Rabbit Maranville. Sorry, I don't have the link for it right now.

the-illini 09-12-2011 09:24 AM

The seller of this postcard is usually pretty good too - surprising coming from him.

Just because because he is ugly doesn't make the player in the photo Rabbit Maranville.

Yep..the seller is as honest as the day is long...I'm sure it was sold to him as Matty...He's selling off his pre-war postcard collection and getting rid of everything...lots of this stuff he's been sitting on for years. All three postcards I put up in the September pick up thread came from this seller.

jerseygary 09-12-2011 12:34 PM

You can definitely say it isn't him, Matty was an officer in the Gas Corps, this guy is an enlisted man as you can tell by the round disks on both his collars.

bcbgcbrcb 09-12-2011 12:37 PM

I agree with Dan B., a very honest e-bay seller who was probably misled by an unscrupulous individual whom he did business with.

GrayGhost 09-12-2011 12:42 PM

He also says "believed to be Matty" and "You'll have to make the call" No intent to mislead folks.

familytoad 09-12-2011 10:14 PM

It could be...

Steve McQueen, deleted scenes from The Great Escape :D

Sorry, just fooling around.
I don't think the seller is intentionally misleading anyone ( at least anyone who reads the entire listing)

yeap

Good seller, no doubt. Misidentified subject though.....

Prior sale

This card was up for sale and sold on eBay approximately 6-8 weeks ago. The posting from the original seller was that this postcard was Matty. I was skeptical then as (was noted above) the uniform was not correct. I believe the OP purchased the card as advertised and is now selling it as it was originally stated. The problem seems to stem from the seller 6 weeks ago.

Dave:

Do you know what it sold for originally?

Most of the current seller's postcards were from his long time collection, I find it odd that while liquidating his entire inventory, he would buy a new item 6-8 weeks ago on e-bay and then be selling it now without realizing that something was wrong with it. If he was misled, two wrongs don't make a right.

Here's the auction where he bought it. I had it on my watch list and forgot to bid. Sold for $81.06. Now seeing that it's not Matty I'm glad I forgot to bid!

I'm going to go in a different direction than everyone else on this one.
I'm sure the seller has a long history of being a good guy, but he is not handling this properly. He may have bought this thinking it's Matty, but now it's pretty clear he knows it's not, or at least has his doubts. That's what the description should say. Instead he says it's believed to be Matty, but you make the call. That sounds a lot like " I believe the card is original, but I'm selling it as a reprint -- you make the call". If he honestly believes it's Matty, there would be no qualifier in the description.

Pretty much what I said.

tbob 09-13-2011 01:39 PM

Good eyes on the uniform but even if the uniform were corect, which it is not, that is NOT Matty. No way, no how and I am 100% positive.

Here's another one currently on e-bay...........Mel Ott............

He knows what he's doing. Not a good way to leave the hobby. Sad
