This is from his obituary in the Fresno Bee

"From 1950-57, no AL player, not even Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra or Ted Williams, slugged more home runs than Mr. Zernial's 220"

I had no idea he put up such stats

Gus Zernial RIP

I remember in 1979 at was at a Fresno State Basketball game with my friend as 13 year olds and walking up to Gus for an autograph (we all had season tickets and knew he would be there). Nervously we look up to this towering man and he gladly signed my ball "Best Wishes Dave, Gus Zernial."

It is the ONLY autographed baseball I own....no authentication needed. Growing up in Fresno he was a treasured figure in the community.

Sweet man and another big loss for baseball!

Very sad indeed. RIP.

I just picked this up within the last month. It is one of my favorite post-war cards.

Gus Zernial

A really friendly guy. I met Gus at the Willow Grove Show in the early 1990's.
