It's no Sin to Pour it In- Jack Sutthoff

1 Attachment(s)
I got a call 2 days ago from a gentleman that found my website and my personal collection online. His name is Steve Sutthoff. You guessed it, it is Jack's grandson. There is a very good biography of him online but the main question is, are there any baseball cards of him besides this one? Anymore stories or info would be great too. I love the poem on this one .....

Also, to Brian Campf.- I believe I got this from you. Can you tell me where you picked it up?

To buy this card. It's not for sale though.

rhettyeakley 09-02-2010 10:16 AM

Leon, I don't think Jack was ever pictured on any true "cards" but I do have this Stenzel's Rooter Button of Sutthoff...

Not a card, but he is listed and pictured in "Baseball in Toledo" By John Husman.

If it really is his grandson, why wouldn't u sell it to him?

Bicem 09-02-2010 04:24 PM

because I have dibs.

timzcardz 09-03-2010 06:31 AM

He is also listed in the 10/06/1906 edition of Sporting Life.

I didn't sell it to him because it's not for sale. He is a printer and I have ok'd him to download the image and make a beautiful color copy. I even offered to go to Kinko's and have one made for him. Besides that there are a lot of things the gentleman has from the grandfather. If this card was the only thing left about his grandfather, or was something extraordinarily special, then I would consider offering it. Him not being a collector means the color copy will probably be just fine with him. I did tell him that if I ever do get rid of it then he has dibs.....right behind Jeff :) ....

As for "karma" I do believe in it....and try to live it....

iggyman 09-03-2010 07:28 AM

Good Golly! That Sutthoff card must be haunted! It obviously fueled the prohibition era and now look at what chaos it has caused on this thread. I want no part of its karma...........Leon, please immediately remove me from the number three slot on your Sutthoff beneficiary will!

Lovely Day...

calvindog 09-03-2010 08:24 AM

This is a funny thread.

Doug 09-03-2010 10:18 AM

I could only imagine what it would like to be a kid in school nowadays with the name Jack Sutthoff (assuming it's pronounced the way it looks)... :D

Anthony S. 09-03-2010 10:40 AM

Leon,

Do you have any idea what year that (very cool) card was produced?

oldjudge 09-03-2010 11:09 AM

Doug-That's hilarious

When I first saw the title on the main page I thought someone hacked Leon's account, especially with the "It's no sin to pour it in" part added to it. :D

I'm obviously not Leon, but it would have been between 1909 and 1919.

From The Baseball Biography Project . . .
Quote:

"I made the biggest mistake when I quit professional baseball in 1909 to enter business for myself." In any case, Sutthoff returned to Cincinnati and operated a saloon bearing his name at the intersection of St. Lawrence, Enright and Warsaw avenues -- on Price Hill, one of the Queen City's first outlying settlements.[14] Jack and Nellie Sutthoff's large family -- as well as Nellie's brother Jim Crowe, a railroad worker -- lived above the establishment. "Dad was an easy touch for credit," his son recalled. So many patrons were in his debt that he accepted goods when he couldn't get cash, including cameras, dumbbells and encyclopedias. In January 1920, as Sutthoff prepared to close his saloon in compliance with the arrival of Prohibition, he gave away what remained of his inventory of whiskey.

Sutthoff Grandson 09-05-2010 08:22 AM

Hello to all and many thanks to Leon. I want to also thank everyone who has replied to this and attached the articles and photos. Although I am not a collector of the really old stuff like you guys, I have collected cards since I was a kid, 70's to 90's. I still love the hobby but with a family of my own I really don't have the cash to do it properly anymore (maybe when the kiddies move out??). With all that being said I do VERY much want to get ANYTHING related to my Grandfather. I have the scan from Leon and will print a copy at work. What a great guy!, he was kind enough to talk with me for about a half hour and even post this thread to help me out. In closing I do hope he will eventually sell or trade that card to me someday. Im actually kind of proud that anyone even give a darn about my Grandfather's items!

I would love to get these items and display them for my family to see, we never got to meet the man and my father and all aunts and uncles are gone. Copies and photos are nice, but I am hoping to get the real things.
Thanks again!
Steve Sutthoff

Leon,

That is an incredibly nice gesture!

Did I mention that I am a distant relative of Honus Wagner? I will send you my mailing address! :D

Doug 09-05-2010 04:16 PM

I'm not related to any baseball players that I know of so I will be happy to accept cash donations for my baseball card budget instead. In all seriousness, that was a very classy gesture that reflects what the hobby should be all about. :)

Sutthoff Grandson 09-05-2010 05:10 PM

Wow!

I don't even know what to say... THANK YOU!!! does not even come close to what is racing through my mind. I spent the last 15 minutes trying to settle down. I am slowly coming back to earth as I write this. I will make this up to you somehow, I promise you that....

Thank you from the bottom of my heart

Steve Sutthoff

chaddurbin 09-05-2010 05:14 PM

sure Jeff....just bid on the Horner Cabinets coming up and all will be good :)

Rob- I truly wasn't looking for a pat on the back, but thanks. When we are on our deathbed and look back at our lives, it won't be about material things, it will be about what we did. I will admit I hated seeing the card go but knowing where it is going made it all worth it many times over. Random acts of kindness are always a good thing. best regards

Matthew H 09-08-2010 02:27 PM

...Still waiting for the gestures coming from the owners of other Suttoff items posted... No? ok.

rhettyeakley 09-08-2010 09:11 PM

Great, now I feel like crap b/c I can't afford to give away the Sutthoff pin I posted above. I blame you Leon!

Sutthoff Grandson 09-14-2010 07:09 PM

Jack Sutthoff has arrived at his new home!
The card arrived late last week and is currently resting in our china cabinet, in the front of course, where everyone can see it. Thanks again Leon, may your kindness return tenfold.

Sutthoff Grandson 09-14-2010 07:15 PM

One more thing if I may, while I very much appreciate the support of other members on here I don't want anyone to feel obligated to give up or even offer to sell anything in their collection. After all, it is a collection and any item in it is there for a reason and I respect that.

ChiefBenderForever 09-14-2010 07:16 PM

That is really cool, it must be very humbling to look at the card and think 'that's my grandfather' ! I have pictures of my grandfather working out in the wheat field and it is very surreal to look at and think about how different times were and how much things have changed and yet stayed the same. Very nice of Leon to give you a connection to your past.

Leon 09-14-2010 07:21 PM

Steve S

Steve- That makes it all worth it. Glad he arrived safely. I am always a little concerned about very scarce heirlooms getting lost. Thanks for the update. best regards

If the way to enlightenment is to cast off our material goods, Leon you have made a nice start but you still have a ways to go. :D

Doug 09-14-2010 08:51 PM

I recently saw an interview on youtube with both of Mickey Mantle's living sons and they said that they don't own a 1952 Topps Mantle. If I give them mine maybe I will win the lottery? :D

Leon 09-15-2010 06:46 AM

well
