Contest: Best picture from the Baltimore National

I had my trip to Baltimore all planned out. My father has enough frequent flyer miles to go to the moon and back and I have a cousin in D.C. with a spare bedroom, government I.D., and kegerator in her kitchen. Alas, I got a call a few weeks ago and I was requested (never been requested before, guess I'm moving on up) by a songwriter to engineer some demos for him. I couldn't pass up the experience, or the money, so I won't be leaving Nashville this week.

So here's the contest. I can not be at the National and I would love to see the what's going on. That being said, I don't want to scroll through dozens of pictures of the Panini or Tri-Star tables.

I want to see the best Pre-War and Net54 action that the National has to offer. Post your pictures here and the winner (the one with the best picture) will receive a beat up raw t206 Mullin horizontal. Not just any beat up raw t206 Mullin horizontal, but the one I won in the inaugural Net54 live auction.

The rules: Post a picture in this thread from Baltimore and I will pick the top 5-10 and do a poll to decide the winner. The winner will receive:

1. The beat up raw Mullin t206 that was the prize of the first Net54 online auction.

2. A couple of other random surprises I find just laying around.

3. Some people over at Collector's Universe have made a Soldier serving overseas in Iraq their pet project.

You can read the thread here http://forums.collectors.com/message...88&STARTPAGE=4

For the third prize I will send the soldier a card in your name.

(The soldier's hobby interests and mailing address are listed in the thread. If you would like to send him a card or just send him a care package check out the thread. His mailing info is listed.)

Here are a couple of ideas I would like to see and would help you in your quest to make the final cut.

1. The best vintage display at the National.
2. Your best pickup at the National.
3. Pictures from Bruce's ladder match against whatever unfortunate dares cross him.
4. Net54 after party pictures.
5. Mr. Mint and a briefcase of cash.
6. Someone from Net54 completely hammered.
7. Most obscure type card discovered.
8. Most obscure piece of memorabilia.
9. Best price offered for a 1987 topps wax box.
10. Leon doing a shot of Jager.

You get the jest. At the least, post an awesome picture from Baltimore so us that couldn't make can soak it in. At the most win a cool prize and help someone serving us overseas.

Here is the Mullin you will receive.

Bottom left of the holder.

Steve when does this end????

T206Collector 08-05-2010 08:01 AM

Anybody else...

...having trouble keeping Morrissey's song "National Front Disco" out of their heads this week:

And I still say :
"Where is our boy ? Ah, we've lost our boy"
But I should know
Why you've gone
Because again and again you've explained
You've gone to the ...

National, ah ...
To the National ..

Howe’s Hunter 08-05-2010 09:41 AM

Could the contest include "Best Smokin' Hot Waitress"?

We could start out with Brittney, and see where it goes from there. Just a thought ...

Chris Counts 08-05-2010 09:49 AM

Ed, I agree. Let's see Brittany ...

Anyone who quotes Moz is OK with me. In fact, I saw 2-3 Morrissey/Smiths shirts today at the National.

Jewish-collector 08-05-2010 07:35 PM

Andrew is right. Brittany was really cute !!!

I bet she was equally smitten by the group of middle-aged men who collect baseball cards.

No crabs yet:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Pup6913 08-06-2010 01:31 AM

That would be #2, 4 and 6 in the list. The rest I am not allowed to show without permission;)

sbfinley 08-06-2010 01:41 AM

Let's say pictures posted by Monday night will be up for consideration. Everyone have a great time.

sbfinley 08-07-2010 04:11 AM

Come on, show something. I'm sitting here in Nashville wondering what I am missing.

This one will hopefully be Frank Wakefields card. I am sure frank will be posting better scans later. Hopefully;)

Here's my early favorite -- Leon at his booth.
For best memorabilia booth I've included a photo of Matt Hart's booth (mghpro on Net54), and I've also added a photo of the most colorful display.

Wow - the long lost Angermeier fielding. I hope the dealer knows what he had :)

Nice! Frank W. ought to be pumped :)
Andrew- out of curiosity, were there a lot of T210s for sale? Were the prices in the ebay ballpark or were they high like other posters have mentioned when talking about other sets?
tbob

Pup6913 08-07-2010 08:31 PM

Lower actually. Alot of vintage guys were using VCP and the prices were good. I am sure Brian and frank will be happy. I also snagged a campy Wilson franks for a buddy and got myself a sgc 4 Jennings 205 and a hobby name correct for 150 total. Great show. Had a blast meeting everyone

sbfinley 08-08-2010 04:03 PM

Great pictures. For those of you that were selling, would you say that business was slow, average, or hot?

glynparson 08-08-2010 05:07 PM

Sales

I'd go with average to good. Sold mostly raw collector grade material.

Jewish-collector 08-08-2010 08:23 PM

Some dealers (vintage thru shiny stuff) that I spoke to said their sales were "decent". Some said "good' and a few others said "great". I would say that the show was a huge success !!! Baltimore had never been a great sports card show city, and I thought this show would not be that good. I am thrilled to say that I was absolutely wrong. This National was a huge success. Period. http://forum.mydyingbride.org/images...s/beerchug.gif

Alan - didn't you already start the lobby for the 2014 Nat to be in Baltimore in a different post? :)

glynparson 08-09-2010 07:46 AM

I second a return to Baltimore

I was one of the good or decent guys Alan spoke with, dont remember which term I used with him, and I would love to go back to Baltimore. Anywhere but Cleveland should be the shows motto. I'd take Atlantic city or Atlanta over the travesty that is Cleveland.

All the Wagner T206's are different. These are all cards I had removed from display cases to hold. And get pics. So at the end of the night I picked up a big guy and.........Well needless to say the camera guy was to slow to snap the pic. He weighed about 250+

Took some time on Friday to go see Joe P. He is the reason that I got the vintage fire lit under me and have a passion to make it a great hobby and life for me and others I can be around.

Matthew H 08-09-2010 10:04 PM

I think that altered Wagner is over-graded. :)

Kenny Cole 08-09-2010 10:18 PM

Best pic of all IMO. You can see Wagners at every National.

Thanks for the pictures everyone. Considering, I started the thread I reserve the right to alter the rules. (Read the fine print.)

Andrew wins. Between the waitresses and the visit to Joe P., I can't think of someone else who better enjoyed the National. Looks like you had a blast.

Shoot me a PM or email with your address and I will send out your prize and the soldier will soon receive the 1971 Topps PSA 8 I purchased to help him complete his set in your name.

iggyman 08-11-2010 07:16 AM

Great pics Andrew!!! That Joe P. memorial was touching. Thank you!

On a wittier note, I strongly suspect that Leon did not get the memo from Marshall about proper dress attire when representing our industry. Perhaps some Argyle socks next time? :p

Lovely Day...

The picture is cropped. How do you know he WASN'T wearing argyle socks (and black sandals)?

Yes but judging by that picture, I'm guessing his wallet is gone.

Jantz 08-11-2010 06:35 PM

So Andrew, Did you ever find your pen that you lost at the National?

I was just checking out the pictures in this thread and realized that we talked briefly and didn't know who each other was! :)

Guess its a bit silly:p

tbob,
I can't say that I agree with that. Kind of like that old country song, I do like my women a little on the trashy side these days. These are just the kind of girls I dig.
