Kid Chocolate?

Looks a lot like Larry Gains but isn't. Place doesn't fit.

Are there initials on the trunks?

Jack McVey maybe?

Exhibitman 05-11-2010 09:37 AM

I was thinking Kid Norfolk

D. Bergin 05-11-2010 11:56 AM

Doesn't look like Norfolk to me.

Here's a couple of Jack Mcvey.

Probably neither, but looks closer to a later career McVey.

Kevin Smith might be the guy to ask if you can get ahold of him. Maybe through Cyberboxing. I think his caramel kings site has been shut down.

Tom Scharf also did a book on Baltimore boxers from this time period.

The initials on the shorts appear to be "KS"

Probably my last shot here. I'm going to go with Kid Snowden. Listed on boxrec as Ted Snowden.

I've got a grainy shot in a scrapbook I'll scan when I have a chance. Also has "KS" initials on his shorts, but in a different style.

Ted "Kid" Snowden

I think we have a winner!

His record on Boxrec doesn't come close to the record touted on the promo you posted.

That's not unusual. Some of the old time managers and promoters would put Barnum to shame.

When the UFC first started in 1993, they did the same thing.... they had one guy that they claimed was 272-0 in street fights, he lost in 30 seconds... turns out he only had a couple fights, it was all about trying to sell the fights as more then they were.

I'd not be so quick to jump to the conclusion that Boxrec is right and the promoter is wrong. One of my cousins kept a scrapbook of all his newspaper reports and a handwritten list of his fights. Boxrec isn't even close, though it has been getting better. In fact, his daughter asked me to get them to fix one glaring mistake where they'd combined his record with another fighter's record. They did clean it up but only after I contacted them.

BTW, it is very, very cool to ID this boxer--the odds of identifying a fighter on an anonymous prewar PC are not great. Then again, I couldn't even ID Stan Ketchel...
