Another fake Ty Cobb T206? Large Scans.

Posted By: Michael Poland
I recently bought a Ty Cobb T206 and I am more certain than not that it is real but I have this sinking feeling it could be fake. I don't have fancy tools just a 10X loupe and I compared it to my other known authentic T206s. The black line around the image is solid, no dots. The name and team is a solid brown color. The back looks totally legitimate. The card stock looks and feels the same. If this is in fact a fake..it is DARN GOOD!

Here are where my suspicions lie. While the name and team look solid and brown the font size seems bigger than my others. Also, depending on how I hold the card in the light small areas seem to be shinier than others. Also, which is not a big worry, but the green on the background has hints of yellow. From what I understand, these are lithograpghs and colors were printed on top of each other and this could just be an example of the yellow leaking through. Anywho, I felt super confident in buying it but now of course after I shell out the dough my skepticism comes into play.

SCANS REMOVED DUE TO HIGH BANDWIDTH USAGE. IF ANYONE WISHES TO SEE THEM LET ME KNOW AND I CAN EMAIL THEM TO YOU.
Posted By: Ben
Michael, that has to be the single largest scan of a card I've EVER seen. A reasonably sized scan would help alot in decifering whether or not your card is genuine. Until then I'll withhold any opinions on the matter.

Posted By: Michael Poland
I apologize. I just thought the bigger I made it the more detail would be seen to help determine it. I reduced the size by half.

Posted By: Chris
Looks real to me. If I am not mistaken, don't reprints have much better registration? This card seems to have bad registration with the colors being misplaced.

Posted By: Michael Poland
Thanks for the responses. I will be sending it off to SGC tomorrow(for my registry). I held it up to my other cards and it doesn't seem to be smaller than the rest. I surely hope it isn't trimmed. I do notice the bottom right corner seems a little cockeyed, hopefully that won't be an adverse factor. Thanks again.

Posted By: petecld
Card looks real but I hope you didn't pay a lot for it.

As mentioned, the bottom is trimmed and the bottom right corner seems to have been skinned off and pasted back on. Notice how the black key line on the right and bottom don't line up at the point of the damage and note the mis-alignment of the "D" logo on his chest. That's not due to print registration. Also note the damage isn't visable on the back meaning just the top layer was skinned off.

Registration of reprints is based on the registration of the original and the skill of the printer doing the reprints.

Posted By: Elliot
Pete's right, the bottom quadrant has been skinned and then reglued on. However, I'm not sure the card has been trimmed.....I think it might just be a diamond cut. Plus the bottom right corner looks like it's been clipped. Toughest of the 4 Cobb cards in T-206, though.

Posted By: Michael Poland
I wonder if this will keep it from getting slabbed? I know that SGC will not grade and slab it if they consider it rebuilt, restored or resurfaced. UGH!!!!

Posted By: hankron
I didn't see the scans (I'm guessing it's the green background), but, even if trimmed and rough, I wouldn't think a T206 Cobb would be difficult to resell. Like the 1933 Goudey Ruth or Gehrig, it's one of the cards lots of people want.
