February Pick Ups

Well I guess I will get the month started with a big pick up for me. Was able to get a very hard PM10 stadium pin off my list...

sforaker 01-31-2018 11:13 PM

That is a really beautiful pin Al! Congrats, I hope all is well with you.

roarfrom34 02-01-2018 06:05 AM

Off eBay I picked up the homeplate Umpire's lineup card from 05/12/84 from an Orioles/A's game which happened to be the last appearance of Jim Palmer in a MLB game (unbeknownst to the seller). Just the other day I had Palmer sign/inscribe it accordingly:

Great start to the month Al. Congratulations! Looks like this is one of those pins with the small baseball located right after his name. Would love to know if this was a manufacturing mark that means these were all made by the same company.

Thanks Mike Funny could be an east coast thing and might be the distributor mark as the ones I see that have it are the Phillies, Pirates, Reds, and Orioles... My have distributed for all these teams. Your guess is as good as mine!;)

With a big thank you to Paul "pherbener", I have now completed my m101-2 set with the arrival today of Mr. Ty Cobb.

I need 27 more of the m101-1 set, and I have also completed the m101-7-8-9 sets.

1918 Apr 14 Cleveland Sunday Leader Rotogravure Pictorial Supplement

Thrilled with this pickup. The Apr 14, 1918 edition of the Cleveland Sunday Leader Rotogravure Pictorial Supplement, showing the smiling faces of the Cleveland Indians. Measures about 16.5" x 22" and is in fantastic shape for a 100 yr old newspaper!

Can't be a printing plate, since it's not backwards.

One of my first pickups of the year is this 1907 Yale vs Harvard game ball. It was the deciding game 3 of their annual 3-game championship, final game being played on neutral territory at the Polo Grounds. The ball is a Spalding Official League Ball...quite rare and exciting in its own right. Notations on the ball include score, date and place, as well as woeful riffs on poetry and song of the day :p...so I would think this actually came from a losing Yale player. The signature on the ball looks to be that of a Yale player as well.

https://i.imgur.com/TVgqylk.jpg

By the way, scanning newspapers re: the game I came across one of the funniest paragraphs ever banged out on an Underwood. So...the first half of the game was played in a light rain, and then a downpour continued for the remaining innings (which incidentally explains the loose stitching on the ball). From the NYT, June 30:

Shredded Wheat, anyone?

Funny Ray. Really good research and very interesting piece, congrats.

and to thank him here as well for his fresh contributions to the McLoughlin article at our site

Rex Barney rare full, unused no-hitter ticket 9/9/48

3 Attachment(s)
I just picked up this exceedingly rare full, unused ticket from 9/9/48 at NY Giants.
On this day, Brooklyn Dodgers fire-balling rookie hurler Rex Barney no-hit the hometown favorite NY Giants 6-0. 4 K's and 2 BB.

As background, ticket stubs from this game surface from time to time, although they are somewhat rare.
Full tickets to this game are super tough. I have seen perhaps 3 full tickets to this game enter the hobby through the years. Two of the three were in pretty beat up shape IMHO, and I passed on both.
This guy is the first really nice one that I have ever seen. I had to own it in my collection...

Many thanks to net54 board members Mike, Charles and Joe for all making sure that I saw this ticket and pointing out the auction to me.
Heads ups are always appreciated as it really does take a village to build a great collection. ;):)

It's really gratifying to have so many collector friends keeping an eye out for me & I'm eternally grateful!!

I picked up a large grouping of letters from the late 1800's of which most dealt with the early oil industry in Pennsylvania. However, within the group were a couple of letters relating to base ball. This letter was written by John O. McClintock. McClintock became an attorney and also an investor in the oil industry. He also played catcher for a strong regional team, the Meadville Mutuals. This letter, however, had to do with some humorous activity in a game in 1876 between the Allegheny team and the Philadelphia Athletics of the newly formed National League. Wish I had access to a newspaper that might better explain why they were trying to arrest Russ McKelvy (who played a couple of short stints in the National League).

July 20, 1876

"...the news I have to communicate are briefly these: last Monday morning John Scheafnocker, one of our constables ... went down to Allegheny and just as McKelvy was going into his position to play ball, arrested him and was going to drag him off to the train and bring him up here again but in that he was defeated. An alderman was there who took temporary bail for the appearance of McKelvy at his office at 7 o'clock of that evening. As soon as that was done, McK stepped back to his position and went to work and pitched against the famous Athletics of Phila. The score was 4 to 0 in favor of the Athletics. They got 8 base hits on McK and the Alleghenys got 7. The 4 runs were made in the 4th inning. At 7 o'clock McK went before the alderman, waived a hearing, and gave bail for his appearance here in August. Madison Bunce made the complaint upon which the warrant was issued. I may go down to Pittsburgh next week. If I do I will see what the situation of affairs is...."

Vandy's ML Debut scored program

4 Attachment(s)
Recently I picked up a nicely scored program to Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer's ML debut. The really cool thing was that it was poorly described on eBay, which set up a great opportunity to finally find this long-time want at an unbelievable price.

On April 22, 1937, Reds rookie southpaw hurler Johnny Vander Meer quietly entered the game as a pinch runner in the 9th inning.
Unfortunately, the hometown Reds ended up on the losing side of a offensive barrage by both teams. The St. Louis Cards prevailed 14-11 over the Reds
