Spring Chantilly, VA Show April 4-6

A number of board members set up as dealers at this show. The Spring show is usually the best. In addition to my "old" (to me stock) I have recently purchased a collection which included 116 T206 cards and complete Topps sets from 1953 to 1975, a Fleer 1960 set and much more. A second recently acquire collection has 555 cards---all from 1932 to 1940. Included are a large selection of the 1933 U.S. Caramels, Goudeys, Batter-ups, Sport Kings, etc. There are 125 cards of Hall of Famers in this second collection. Please stop by and at least say hello! I will give Net54 members who mention this post a 10% discount.

My mistake. Good luck at the show.

Saturday

May be there Saturday, but dependent on my son's baseball schedule (season starts Saturday, no schedule yet!) and/or the weather. As a Colts fan, he really wants to get Robert Mathis' autograph.

Will be there Saturday myself. I am sure I'll be wearing a Marshall University cap.

oldphil 03-31-2014 07:31 AM

I'll also be there Saturday. I am the tall fellow that looks younger than his age.

Runscott 03-31-2014 10:11 AM

Missing it this year, but hoping to set up next year, since it's so close to my kids. Have fun.

t206blogcom 03-31-2014 12:29 PM

My wife's bday is Friday, which in her mind extends through the entire weekend. So it's doubtful I'll make it this year unless it's just for a quick hour. :(

veleno45 03-31-2014 06:08 PM

I will be there Friday/Saturday. Is there a Net54 secret handshake or hand signal I need to know?

ValKehl 03-31-2014 09:41 PM

Be there Friday, as always, wearing my "Senators" bb cap - and, I usually remember to wear my Net 54 pin.

Will anyone who attends today give a little sneak peak of how the shows looking for us weekend attendees? Thank you for any reports.

t206blogcom 04-04-2014 08:35 PM

I ended up going after all, but only for a quick 45 minutes. While I didn't stop at every table or look at much in real detail, it seemed like a pretty good show. Typical dealers were set up with a good mix of post-war, modern, autos, memorabilia, pre-war, etc. More 80s/90s wax boxes than I've seen in awhile. Bill Chappelle has a great pre-war table as always. I want to say the admission fees changed slightly with an option for a weekend pass. There were signs on the front door, but I walked in without paying much attention. Again, seemed like a good show with stocked tables and fairly good attendance for a Friday afternoon.

Val - It was good seeing you as always!

ValKehl 04-04-2014 10:07 PM

I pretty much agree with everything Jason S. said - other dealers with a good amount of pre-War include regulars Roger Neufeldt (sp?), Rand Bailey, Larrie Dean, etc.

I was able to do a nice trade (thus saving my $$ for REA!) with Wm./Bill Chappell - one of the cards I acquired is a W501 of Sam Rice, which I have been searching for forever! BTW, Chappell told me he won't be coming to the July show (too close to the National).

Jason W., several dealers had a few T210s, although most of the prices seemed a bit high - but then again, T210 prices seem to have escalated a good bit over the last few years, although I don't follow them closely.

Jason S., I assume that your wife enjoyed her birthday dinner and that she never found out about your stopping by the Chantilly Show beforehand!! Good luck with your house search.

Best to you both,
Val

Didn't make it. My son's game started 30 min late making it impossible to get there within Mathis' autograph window. Next time...

Jason 04-05-2014 02:30 PM

Thank you Jason and Val for relaying some info on the show.I just got out of there and did manage to find a few Red Borders. No T209's unfortunately. It was a pretty good show plenty of T206's some priced great some priced a little high. I had the pleasure to meet Roger Neufeldt, Rand Bailey, and Bill Chappell. I saw a W501 Rice at Bills table and thought of you Val.Was that one of the cards you traded? My haul was as follows

Series 3 Davis
Series 4 Zurlage duplicate for trading if anyone is interested
Series 6 Meyers and Thoss for a great package deal

Even better than the pickups was the fact my son had a great time at the show. He only spent a few bucks there however and finished his alloted cash at Gamestop.

bbcard1 04-06-2014 07:13 AM

Had a good show all in all, didn't find much prewar and mainly worked on my 1961 set. Show traffic was good, most dealers were happy.

I have a baseball encyclopedia that I get signed by former major leaguers...I've actually paid for very few but I did get a super ticket for the three 1962 New York Mets ($45 for Kranepool, Thomas and Hook). I have the players sign over their entry in the book. It was memorable. Hook accidentally signed over Thomas' entry...which I just laughter it off and had Thomas also sign it and Hook resign on his...Not really a big deal. the book has been across the country and shows a fair amount of love...probably have 250 or so signed.

Anyhow, I was trying to be polite and chat and Thomas tells me I need to buy one of this photos of him, Aaron, Torre and Mathews from when they hit four homers in a row and that he "sells them for kids with cancer." I told him how cool I thought it was that he was a piece of that memorable event but no thanks. To be honest I don't collect autographs except for my book and I have boxes full of stuff like that with no clear idea of how I will get rid of it. He continued to press and I said, no, thanks. Finally he raised his voice and said,"You should be ashamed of yourself." I wasn't.

So I got to see Rand Bailey and got called out by a 1962 Met on the same day...what more could you ask for at a show?

Cobb has a yellow streak running....

Went to the show on Saturday and stayed for about 4 hours. Lots of activity but of course much of it was autograph related. Talked to a few NET54ers and spent some time talking to Rand Bailey and his wife (Alice I believe). Two of the nicest people in the hobby in my opinion. Traded for this Cobbie. I thought it was pretty cool. Comforting to see that I am not the only idiot who enjoys this hobby.

Unfortunately I didn't get to stop by but will be at the next show since I am moving to the area.

That is a really nice Cobby, congrats. Ironically I picked up mine at a smaller show too....Maybe shows are the new thing? (we can only hope and dream)

And thanks for the reviews on the show from those that went. It is appreciated.
