Ah.

JollyElm 01-07-2019 03:27 PM

Hey, Tim, how about making a video (or even taking still pics along the way) to document and show us your process in turning a blank page and a huge pile of baseball cards into a work of art?? That would be pretty frickin' cool.

Making that oval off-center to match the card drove me insane.

I take stills from time to time, so it is possible to put something like that together. I'll be working on a piece again at the National this summer also, so if you're in Chicago.....you can see the creation process live.

Now the 1986 Topps Traded Bo Jackson is complete:

More vintage on the horizon.....

CobbSpikedMe 01-21-2019 11:59 AM

I always hated the 1986 Topps design ever since it came out when I was a kid, but for some reason always loved the Traded Bo Jackson portrait. That card just looks great and pictures such a great athlete. Awesome piece Tim. Again.

Thanks! I totally agree with the 86 Topps design. I have always disliked it, but was pleasantly surprised at how well it translated to the art. The simple, clean design is going to look good on a wall.

Incredible work

Despite how limited your medium is, you capture the essences of these images so well. It’s beyond impressive. Keep ‘em coming!

Tim that's fantastic!

JollyElm 01-24-2019 02:53 PM

Holy heck!! My goodness!!!!

Joshwesley 01-24-2019 08:21 PM

Is satch for sale or is that a commission piece ?

brianp-beme 01-24-2019 09:15 PM

These are fantastic pieces of art. Keep up the good work, and maybe late 80's and early 90's cards value will rise due to less supply.

Brian

Thank you all. Joshwesley, it is still available.

Back to the grind! Here's my latest....a commissioned 1957 Topps Roberto Clemente. As I will do with all Clemente pieces from 57-69, I made the alteration of his first name from Bob to Roberto:

TimCarrollArt 03-01-2019 12:17 PM

Finished....my tribute to one of the greatest works of baseball art of all-time. From the cover of the April 23, 1949 edition of the Saturday Evening Post, Norman Rockwell's "Game Called Because of Rain."

Over 300 Hours, over 4,000 common cards used, and the final dimensions are 34.5" x 37".

clydepepper 03-01-2019 07:07 PM

Tim- I think this is your best work yet!

Simply Amazing! I'm sure Mr. Rockwell would appreciate your 'cut' on his work.

.

JollyElm 03-01-2019 08:07 PM

Put your 'Rockwell' in The Louvre and the foot traffic to the Mona Lisa would completely disappear!!!

Thank you, everyone! I always feel a sense of accomplishment when I finish one, but this one seemed unusually special. It's probably due to the combination of art/baseball/cards and how much I have adored this image my entire life....but it certainly ranks right up there with my personal favorite pieces.

TimCarrollArt 04-05-2019 02:13 PM

New work....

Couple of commission pieces off the books!

This is a custom young Rickey Henderson, with the added Swingin' A's logo:

Okay, I had to do some sizing, warping and distorting type of finagling in photoshop to get the images to 'match' (the Babe Ruth artwork pictured on page one wasn't a result of a perfectly flat scan), so it's not dead on, but here we go anyway...

That's pretty wild! Thanks for putting that together.

Finished with another commission. 1981 Topps George Brett:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...697980c8_z.jpg

Aquarian Sports Cards 05-06-2019 08:58 PM

Oh man, that Brett was one of the original cards I owned. My brother went in to have his tonsils out in 1981 and I bought him two Rack Packs and the Brett was in one. later I won it knocking down the leaner.
It had "AP" written on the back in crayon (We decided to make our own baseball All-Pro teams) and dead round corners and my heart broke when I somehow lost it in a move.

Interesting question, would you consider making an off-grade card?

Great story! The client that commissioned the Brett started collecting in '81, and that is why he chose this particular issue. He said he and his friends kept pulling Mike Cubbage, and the running joke was "I'll trade you 10 Mike Cubbages for......" So, there's a 1981 Topps Mike Cubbage Easter egg hidden on Brett's face.

As for the off-grade - I have a commission coming later this year that will be exactly this. It's going to be epic.

You should start hiding a Mike Cubbage in each piece you do from now on, so it will become your version of Al Hirschfeld's "NINA."

Devon White always seems to get into the pieces, although I have no particular reason for putting him there. Otis Nixon, Bob Welch, and Franklin Stubbs are others that pop up often.

Always thought Nixon was more of a ground ball guy...

Not a card, but...

Here's my latest finished commission. Hank Aaron custom; 28" x 22". Hope to see many of you in Chicago during the National!

Not vintage, but it certainly qualifies as iconic:

My guess - Conlon.

Batpig 06-28-2019 09:41 AM

Heavily trimmed. Reporting these to Blowout.

Centauri 06-28-2019 03:06 PM

Not trimmed - conserved.
