I have been living on Kauai the past 6 years..

Kawika 02-09-2014 10:20 AM

I lived in Honolulu for twenty years. Moved back to the mainland in 2011. Fire away.

Was kamaʻāina from ʻĀina Haina.

That sounds awesome as I continue to watch snow fall again in Ohio.

Every Island is different. Honolulu is a different world compared to the deep rain forest jungle that I live in.

Here on the b. I. mostly I just watch the surfers!:D

Use to live in Akron, UA grad, and worked in Cleveland. Now that's some rough winters.

My wife and I are gearing up over the next decade to be in position to move to Hawaii. Either Oahu or B.I.; haven't decided. I am leaning towards Oahu to start and possibly then to Kona if that is too urban for our tastes. I plan to take the HI bar exam in a couple of years...

Nice picture.:D:cool: From spending over 2 months in Amsterdam I can tell you it is all about the atmosphere because the weed there is way overrated.

Like an idiot, I turned down a chance to take a teaching job in Hawaii when I was fresh out of college. I was just married and applying just about everywhere I could think of. Went to a job fair hosted by my college and Hawaii - apparently the entire state is one school district, or at least one group does all the hiring - was there. I interviewed with the guy and he indicated he'd like to hire me. The salary offer was shockingly low and I asked the guy how teachers could afford to live there. He told me "well, most of our first and second-year teachers get a roommate". I then asked about moving expenses and was told they'd give me $800. Even in 1995, that wouldn't have been enough to get me and my wife there, let alone much of our stuff. I then told the guy the salary was not competitive and asked "How do you get anybody to come work for you?" Dude leaned back in his chair, spread his arms real wide and said "We're Hawaii." I couldn't argue, LOL.

At the time, all I cared about was the salary being really low. We'd have struggled like mad on the salary they offered even if my wife got a job. The idea of getting a roommate while we were newlyweds was NOT appealing. And so I turned the job down. And we've regretted it ever since. Shoulda taken the job, eaten ramen noodles every night, and soaked up the atmosphere of living in Hawaii.

And now, 19 years later, my wife and I are headed there for the first time in three weeks!

FWIW, I read an article about what it's like teaching in Hawaii. I guess the native population has some extremely poor neighborhoods, and they aren't very willing to open up with non-natives, so teaching there can be like beating your head against the wall (even more so than in Ohio!) Basically, the turnover rate is extremely high.

I have heard much the same thing. I regret not taking the job but there's a real good chance I'd have regretted taking it, too :)

Unfortunately Budweiser owns ~1/3 of the Kona Brewery and lots of their beer is now coming from New Hampshire. :(

Alex: I pm'ed you a lengthy reply to your questions about Hawaii on Tuesday evening but have had no indication that you received it or read it. Please let me know what's up.

How close are you to Pahoa and the current lava flow?

Adam: Dude has bigger problems than Madame Pele, namely Leon Luckey. He was banned from the site many months back.

Whoops! I guess I gotta follow the N54 soap opera closer than I do. Regardless, hope he doesn't get burned out of his home. Anyone who posts that many pics of hot bikini-clad models can't be all bad...

And people thought I was out of touch for asking who or what a Meadow Soprano was. I still think that's a great porn star name :D

Considering how her career is going, she might recycle it for that purpose.:D
