Need advice with a Ty Cobb strip card

Posted By: Ken W.
A W515-1 Cobb has been offered for awhile on eBay. The Standard Catalog says that most of these cards have a "U & U" copyright line on them, and indeed, there is currently another W515-1 Cobb being listed that appears to have the marking. Could the copyright be on some cards, and not others, even for the same player? I sort of like this particular issue, because of the "Tygers" team name. I thought the price was pretty good, considering the apparent decent condition. Maybe a little too good? Any thoughts?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT &viewitem=&item=8821686941&rd=1&rd=1

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
For starters, it looks real to me.

Main problem is that it has been cut down way too much. There should be a margin around it. This image below, which is not mine, should show some W515 cards in a strip, so you can see what margin should remain. And it shows "Tygers".

I think the card is authentic, just trimmed WAY too much, even for me.

Posted By: Kyle
You should be able to find a much nicer one for $150 or a lot less. Search for w515 as well as "w 515" like you've been doing and one will pop up.

Good luck!
-Kyle-

Posted By: daryle
the 1923 W515-2 Little Wonder Picture Series. The way to tell the difference is in the photo itself. The offered Cobb card shows 5 buttons on his jersey. Look at the uncut strip with the Cobb card shown on the thread.......4 buttons. The Little Wonder Pictures Series cards have larger photos since the cards are a little taller than the W515-1s and some do not have the "U&U" copyright. I contacted Bob Lemke several years ago when the cards showed up in the Sports Collectors Digest in his column "Standard Catalog Update". I read the article and thought " I have the W515 set.......lots of mine have the writing at the top and some I have noticed are taller".....hmmmmmmmmm. I then contacted Lemke and he asked for photocopies and any info I could provide..........then came the "Little Wonder Picture Series W515-2s". Ended up, I had 54 of the 60 cards either being larger without the writing at the top or with part of the Title at the top ( I bought these in a large strip card collection as a full set of W515). The cards pictured in the Standard Catalog under W515-2 and Little Wonder Picture Series are from the photocopies I sent him.
