How to tell the difference between "set 81" and "set 82" Exhibits?

Posted By: fkw
I have seen for many years the late 1920's Exhibits (often called 1926-29 Postcard Back Exhibits) broken down into sets called "set 81" and "set 82". These names are often used by Lew Lipset, as Ive seen him use these names for them for the last 25 years (he has some auctions up right now on eBay that use these names).

My question....... How do you tell these apart? And why is the name 81 and 82?

And I see he calls the 1922 Eastern Exhibits "set 62".
How and where do these numbers come from?

Thanks Frank

How to tell the difference between "set 81" and "set 82" Exhibits?

Posted By: jackgoodman
I'm guessing that the numbers derive from Elwood Scharf's series of articles published in the old Trader Speaks. I don't know if those were numbers he assigned or whether he was picking them from somewhere else, but I do recall his numbering each set of exhibits he discussed. Hope that helps.

How to tell the difference between "set 81" and "set 82" Exhibits?

Posted By: warshawlaw
The names derive from Woody Scharf's articles in TTS but later research has proven that the distinctions made in the articles between Set 81-82-83 aren't really meaningful. It is best to look at the whole issue as a series of overlapping printings. I will have an article exploring this set in depth in a future Old Cardboard.
