Bat Experts - Help?

2 Attachment(s)
I hit a little antique shop and they had a few things that made me scratch my head a bit - the first is a very oversized bat as you can see... and has very weird carving - which looks maybe hawaiian or something!?!? i have no clue on this - any info or est. value would help .... i didnt get it bought, because hes pretty proud of it and i thought it was bizarre haha....

Hi, interesting bat. As a bat, as it is not a pro manufactured, or pre 1880, I would value at about 50-100. As folk art, the condition and interest would also lead I think to a value of about 50-100. Best

thanks, the owner thought it was a trophy bat of some sort

not a baseball bat.

Jim, tapered barrel end, in combination with the design, have you leaning more toward stair rail? curious as to your thoughts.

Could be a souvenir pinata bat from Mexico.

The designs look like something on an over sized pinata bat. Maybe, as suggested, this is what it is, some type of souvenir pinata bat.

never thought about pinata at all.... interesting!

makes sense too... as i stated above for whatever reason the seller did think it was a trophy bat and did think it was Hawaiian - but a pinata bat makes sense - i could see the markings being mexican....

They also use then in other parts of the world to kill seals and other animals

I agree that it looks like a pinata bat, but most pinata bats are hand-colored.

How heavy is it? If it is a pinata bat I would expect it to be relatively light weight. If it is heavy, I would think it could be some sort of ceremonial Indian club.

Here is what came up on ebay when I searched Hawaiian bat....

It was lighter weight than I anticipated when I picked it up. I made my dad model it - he is about 5'10 or so to get a scale for just how big that thing is.

Same guy had the Johnny Sain lot that I mentioned in another post - he gets some great stuff - he also had just found an authenticated NORMAN ROCKWELL PAINTING ON CANVAS that he just found at a flea market for 300....I saw it - started drooling, asked for a price then realized he was fully aware of what he had. He actually just agreed to put it on 2 year loan with the Rockwell Museum....Anyway, the guy does have some great stuff which made me really wonder if he had something special with the bat
