Did Santa bring you anything baseball related?

My wife picked me up all the back issues of Old Cardboard. Pretty excited. Did anyone else get anything baseball related?

T206Collector 12-25-2011 06:56 AM

This is a great choice, imo. Kids are the best. Them being happy (well, as happy as can be) is what it's all about. You da' man, Johnny.....and more importantly your kids love you and you put them first. I truly wish every parent did the same.

pgellis 12-25-2011 08:38 AM

zljones 12-25-2011 10:54 AM

The Old Judge book, but I knew it was coming because I had to help my finacee find it on ebay fast before they all sold out at $25 a piece.

kmac32 12-25-2011 11:23 AM

11 slabbed E121 cards, Lipsets books, Santo / pat Hughes perfect 10 book, and all 10 Pat Hughes CDs....... The best gift however was our former English mastiff had wondered off from his new owners and they didn't know where he went...lye returned to the safe on Christmas day.

drc 12-25-2011 12:29 PM

I got a sweater. If you stand 200 feet away in the dark, it might resemble a 1910s baseball sweater.

Blunder19 12-25-2011 01:03 PM

After making sure everyone else in my family had a great christmas, I decided to get a present from me to myself.... :)

Wanted to have the card in hand before I said anything :)

Merry Christmas every one.

Jamie

HRBAKER 12-25-2011 01:14 PM

Nope, not this year. I got a new pair of loafers.
Great to have my daughter home from college and the whole family together for a couple of weeks. Santa turned over the sleigh for the kids though! That made my Christmas seeing them.

That and the fact that this was first year in a few I didn't have to darken the door of the Apple store!

atx840 12-25-2011 02:03 PM

CONGRATS Jamie!!!

Such a classic portrait on a real tough back, a truly great card.

freakhappy 12-25-2011 03:59 PM

xmas

I was also able to pick up the Old Judge book and Old Cardboard back issues....great stuff. I had to pick them up for relatives and let them pay me back...otherwise I would have received socks and underwear

As for any actual cardboard. I don't ask for any for christmas because I grab so many throughout the year and mainly just buy for the kiddos...that's what christmas is about, right? ;)

I'm sorry this isn't prewar but I had to share this story.

My wife has always been amazing at finding card for me to help in my obsession. This year was no different. Our budget is modest so I usually settle for lower conditioned cards to fill my sets but she always takes the time to find nice cards with great eye appeal for me. I am hopeing to start to build a 1952 Bowman set so she found a great example of Roy Campanella for me. When this card arrived our local postal carrier thought they would be helpful and deliver all of the mail onto out front porch instead of the mailbox (there were other larger packages that day).

Unknown to my wife inside of the house and before she found the mail outside our friendly, yet apparently chew happy beagle named Rascal found the mail for her. He chewed up all of the mail including the bills (not so hard to replace) as well as my wife treasure for me on Christmas day (not so easy to replace).

When my 11 year old daugther saw the dog with something in the backyard she alerted my wife and the chase comensed. After a bit of struggle my wife and daughter managed to corner Rascal and retrive his "prize".

As you can see from the scans the card was actually undamaged in this melee although I can't say as much for the graded case it came in.

I love my wife but I'm glad I wasn't the dog or the person who answered the phone at out local post office that day.

Drew

campyfan39 12-25-2011 08:29 PM

Drew now you have a decision to make. Take it out of the case or keep it in for the memories!

k-dog 12-25-2011 08:44 PM

I think the Beckett holder may have saved the card! If that was in PSA plastic, I don't think it would have gone undamaged! Thanks for sharing that story.

Fred 12-25-2011 09:00 PM

Drew,

Thank goodness that wasn't something that was in between two cardboard stiffners and a plastic sleeve. Are you planning on leaving it in (what's left of) the Beckett holder? That would be an interesting piece to keep like that, great story behind it.

dog*dirt 12-25-2011 09:10 PM

That is one good story. Maybe the dog dislikes the Dodgers or maybe Italians.

campyfan39 12-25-2011 09:14 PM

Hilarious that 2 out of the last 3 responses to Drew's post have "dog" in their username haha

sycks22 12-25-2011 09:30 PM

I think the dog was a SGC fan and didn't want it in the BVG holder.

terjung 12-25-2011 09:34 PM

That may actually be a good story for Beckett to use as marketing. I'd contact them to see if they are interested in it.

I can see it now... Christmas surprise from a loving wife that survives the neighbor dog - all thanks to the protection offered by a Beckett slab.

If they're smart, they'd probably try to use it. (I know I would.)

Great gift, btw!

atx840 12-25-2011 10:34 PM

Great story, I bet your wife's heart sank when she realized that of course the dog would find the one not so easily replaced gift. I'd keep it as is.

mrvster 12-26-2011 05:00 AM

Jamie....

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

WOW!!!

CONGRATS

almostdone 12-26-2011 05:52 AM

All I knew was something happened and she wasn't happy. I'm smart enough to stay away and not pry too much. Besides, if I found out I think we wouldn't have a dog anymore.

I too was on the receiving end of an unrequested copy of "Glory of their Times" - don't we have great wives!!

dabigyankeeman 12-26-2011 08:50 AM

It was pre-setup, but my wife gave me a 1940 Play Ball Joe DiMaggio. The final Yankee I needed to have every Yankee Play Ball card, 1939 thru 1941.

Also from a Secret Santa on Facebook i got a nice Yankee card holder/money clip.

Finally got the book "1921" from a friend from another forum.

Topps Set

My four year old son got the complete 2011 Topps set (not that exciting I know) but the best part was when he wanted me to sit with him and read off the name of every card in the set (all 660). Favorite card was Billy Butler because his name is Billy.

jp1216 12-26-2011 03:10 PM

My 10 year-old got me one of those 15 card random packaged packs. All Topps from 2007-09. "Because daddy loves cards".... ;)

edriskill 12-26-2011 06:20 PM

My wife gave me my first 1936 Goudey R312 of Mickey Cochrane. A gorgeous premium.

Oh, Santa brought me something good. I apologize the gold gilding was not picked up in the scan:

vintagerookies51 12-26-2011 09:17 PM

It was pre-set and I paid for a small portion but I received an E106 Ty Cobb!

familytoad 12-26-2011 09:39 PM

Me too!

I got that same bathroom reader book this year :p
Pretty cool, I read a few pages and actually knew most of the answers.

For those of you who have heard of OBC, we have a Secret Santa exchange every year...this year I must have been high up the "nice" list as my Santa mailed a 67 topps Mickey Mantle!!

And I also received a bit o'spendin' cash with which I'll be browsing the BST section to get myself sumthin' nice;)

Thank you Santa for a 1967 Phillies Safe Driving complete set. It's not vintage but a cool gift.

bn2cardz 12-27-2011 12:35 PM

Like a couple of other members, I too, received "The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company 1886-1890". I have been enjoying it a lot.

My wife also picked me up the back issues of Old Cardboard, but she upgraded and got me the Pre-war card posters, too. Even got them framed. Now all I got to do is find an empty wall in my study to display them. Very cool!

Best regards,

Joe

marvjung 12-27-2011 08:06 PM

Hi All - been awhile since I posted :)

This year, Santa, who had a striking resemblance to my girlfriend, knew I liked "old baseball stuff," and picked up this little thing for me:

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l3...aseballpic.jpg

She had it framed and gave it to me - it's modern and it looks like a ball player screened over a page from a dictionary (starting with "Lutheran" and ending with "lying" - go figure  ). Anyway, it's pretty darn cool and it's going up in my sports room :D

GrayGhost 12-28-2011 06:59 AM

One of my best friends got me the Joe Taxiara book " A Unique look at Big league baseball" thru 2010. for stat FREAKS, it has EVERYTHING. Awesome book for sure.

D. Broughman 12-28-2011 07:59 AM

My wife got me a table for my memorabilia room. My other table didn't go good with my stadium chairs I picked up last month.:D

Northviewcats 12-28-2011 02:49 PM

Nice table

Hey Dynarl,

If my wife sees a picture of that table she would have to have it. Very cool!

Best regards,

Joe
