Doc and Darryl - ESPN Film 30 for 30 documentary

Tonight I saw a sneak preview of this film.
It is a very well done saga of these two former Mets greats and the fall from grace that almost destroyed their lives.
I recommend this when it hits ESPN.

growing up strawberry was my favorite player in the late '80's, remember catching him and the mets watching WWOR. couldn't be more excited when the dodgers managed to sign him as a free agent. they both had prodigious talents but i feel the culture they were in kind of enabled them. they'd be much better in today's structure imo.

I loved "Doc", myself. I'm very interested in seeing this. Thank you, RS!

It is not a "happy" film. It deals with the roots of their addictions besides dealing with the stardom. They both were born into alcoholic families and this greatly influenced their lives.
My personal conclusions about them,,, Strawberry seems to have straightened himself out. Not so sure about Doc Gooden :(.

Looks like July 14: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/met...uly-14-on-espn

There was a good article in SI on this topic last year . I'd bet that helped the development engine of this project.

A bump to let you know that this film is on tonight.

Pretty darn good!

Gooden looked really bad in the film. He looks 15-20 years older than he really is. The film was well done, but I'm wondering what take the younger generation get from this.

Straw was my favorite player growing up. He looks good. Doc looks not so good; lots of speculation about his current sobriety. Wish them success is staying sober. As the documentary makes clear, it isn't an easy battle for these people and many many others. I really think there must be a brain chemical/structure reason why some people try it once and just can't so no, like the vast majority of people can try something and quickly surmise its not worth it.

Glad to see that some of you have watched this film.
And I agree with those that expressed an opinion about Doc not looking so good and Darryl looking like he is ok.

Doc & D Straw.

haven't (yet) seen the film, but...TWO extremely talented players I personally believe pissed away their talents.

JMO, but I think they short-sheeted themselves in many ways.

I finally saw the 30 For 30 on Strawberry and Gooden a few days ago. I agree with the sentiment that Gooden looks rough, definitely worse for wear than Strawberry. I initially did not even recognize Gooden for a few seconds.
