Database of TPG flips

Hi all,

I'm looking for a good reference that shows images for all of the PSA, SGC, and Beckett flips that have been used since the inception of third-party grading.

I found this site that shows images of the PSA flips but have not been able to find something similar for SGC and Beckett.

https://allvintagecards.com/history-of-psa-flips/

Does anybody have a resource they could share?

thanks,

jeff

I don't know of a list for SGC, but I can think of at least 3 main designs, the old SG label, the old SGC label and the new SGC label.

The top pair has a lighter border than the second pair. I also initially thought that the font was slightly different, but now I'm not sure. The third and fourth pairs are the latest designs, as far as I can tell.

Early on SGC flips did not have 1-10.

The website you provided a link to isn't entirely correct.

The flip they say was first and issued from 1991 to 1992 was used atleast until 1996 as I submitted cards in 1996 that had the flip as the 1982 Topps Ronnie Lott example.

The original flips had no number, just the alphabetic grade vg/ex, mint, etc.

I will find my NSCC program from the first Atlanta National where the PSA ad shows such flips. It has been years since I encountered the original flip with no numeric grade in the wild.

Another little known fact, for a brief period of time the lower end of the grading scale was different. From memory, it went Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent -- I had a VG 4 Goudey Gehrig.

The long bar codes definitely were around for a number of years if my memory of it is right.

Yep. I once had a 1952 Topps Monte Irvin purchased in a collection in a PSA 4 VG or something to that affect. Wish I would have kept it for reference. It was probably before I had a computer or scanner.

In fact the SCP auctions PSA Genuine T206 Wagner with the 00000002 serial number was actually graded in 1996 or 1997 contrary to what many believe. I had a chance to buy the card raw and passed and Levi bought it and had PSA slab it. That slab still had the long bar code.

This is as early as it gets with Beckett. They graded 12 cards in house to test the slabs before they ever graded a single card for the public. This is card #0005 from that test run. I bought this card from Leon who bought it from Mark Anderson.

I also bought serial #007 personally from Mark. It also has Jim Beckett III as the card. Mark couldn't remember for sure but thought 3 or 4 of the 12 cards graded in testing was the Beckett card.
