Great Card, Wrong Player Image

There a few terrific cards out there that portray the wrong player on the obverse side of the card. I will start with the T3 Turkey Reds of Frank Baker that in reality shows his A's teammate Jack Barry. Any others?

One of the reasons I just purchased a low-grade E97 Cy young. Cool story behind it that it actually pictures Irv Young.

We have a member with an avatar showing a picture of Ken Hubbs posthumously gracing the front of Dick Ellsworth's 1966 Topps card.

I remember the 1969 Topps card of Aurelio Rodriguez showing an Angels batboy and a Gary Pettis card from some year also having a batboy showing.

I realize these are all post-war cards, they are the only ones I'm aware of.

Good Thread Idea.

In the April 1, 1957 Card Collector's Bulletin, Buck Barker had a long article about cards that picture the wrong player. I posted most of that issue here: http://net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=218784, and below is Barker's article.

Ted Williams ? Bobby Doerr ? Really Bobby Doerr !

http://imagehost.vendio.com/a/204295...YDOERR_NEW.JPG

.... I know it's really Bobby Doerr because on the back of the " Ted Williams " some little kid , back in the late forties , wrote in a childish script , in pencil , "really bobby doerr "......I am a trusting soul , and little kids don't lie about stuff like that.

Don Johnson really had a knack for getting into cards of other players. He Wally Pipped Pete Runnels from 1953 Topps card #219. I saw a copy of that card that Runnels signed and inscribed "This is actually Don Johnson".

Elmer Knetzer listed as Ed Konetchy on a D381 Fleischmann's Bakery card. Same thing happened on Knetzer's card with Konetchy's image:

Although Goodwin & Co. indicated the player shown on this card is Leech Maskrey, it is, in fact, James Macullar.

Matt Clark at SGC is kindly having the card reholdered/relabeled to reflect the proper information.

The N403 "Yum Yum" card labeled as Cap Anson, actually pictures Ned Williamson.

Also, the N300 John Clarkson, while picturing John, shows him with St Louis. Thing is, John never played for St Louis, and retired after the 1894 season. His brother Dad Clarkson played for St Louis from 1893-1895.

Contrary to what is indicated by this T210 card, this is not L.I. Mills. It is his Wilson teammate Miller who is also depicted with this same pose in the T209-II series.

irv 06-07-2016 07:38 PM

Sorry, not Pre-war, but it has been said on here this is not Billy Herman but rather Dick Williams?

Hi John

Here's a card not seen to often....an E104 Bris Lord. But of course, it's not really him, it's Sherry Magee (reverse image).

http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/t...bmageelord.jpg

Incidentally......both Magee and Lord have the following in common......

Born a year apart in countryside towns in Pennsylvania.

Started their major league careers in BB in 1905 in Philadelphia.

This '56 Topps Aaron actully depicts Willie Mays sliding into home. Topps doctored the NY Giants uniform and air-brushed an "M" and a red bill on the cap.

The V89 William Paterson Waite Hoyt is actually Herb Pennock:

The 1917 "Youth's Companion" stamp of Babe Ruth actually pictures Rube Marquard.

At least five T206 cards show the wrong player: Art Kruger is really Otto Krueger, Bill Clymer is Otis Clymer, Lucky Wright is Eugene Wright, Bud Sharpe is Bill Hinchman, while Harry Hinchman is actually Bud Sharpe

Butch7999 06-08-2016 11:33 AM

Among game cards, there's the WG2 Fan Craze "Art Series" American League set, which mangles the names
of half a dozen players and then includes "Billy Owen, Boston."
Thanks again to the fellows on board here who helped us solve his actual identity (and team) several years ago:

Tango eggs has Tinker listed as Weaver, Demmitt listed as Felsch, Doolan as Morgan, and one other that I can't think of right now (Jacklitsch?).

Love this image... too bad it's Black Jack Berry. Still own it, and pretend it's Frank Baker.;)

From the M101-4/5, the throwing version of Amos Strunk is actually Olaf Henriksen (link attached) and the batting version of Bob Shawkey is actually Stuffy McInnis.

1916 M101-4/5 Clarence Tillie Walker. Picture is actually Carl Weilman. On top of that it is a reverse image of Weilman, who was a lefty.

Well, when I'm wrong, I'm wrong and I'll admit to it completely. The player on the M101-4/5 of Tillie Walker who is throwing is not Carl Weilman, but Ernie Walker. I want to thank Todd Schultz (nolemmings) for the picture of Walker, who is the brother of the first Dixie Walker and uncle of Dixie Walker and Harry the Hat Walker. Here is the picture of the player and a partial picture of the card. I will not feast on a little (lot) of crow. :o

Not my card anymore but he is throwing left on this card....even though the profile on the E90-1 series (and other cards of the same pic) looks similar.....

This is Irv and when I bought him, a long time ago, I thought it was really CY.

I don't think this has been posted yet. It's the deceased Ken Hubbs, not Ellsworth.

Hi Leon,

Agreed that E97 is definitely Irv Young.

But I was convinced (as were many other posters) by the image one of our members found of Cy that the E92, E90-1 (Cleveland), and other E cards using the same rendering that it was a somewhat poorly drawn depiction of an actual Cy Young photo.

Cheers,
Blair

The dyslexic in me noticed that George Bell's E90-1 shows him as left handed. He, of course, was right handed (T206s and any reference). Being not much of a facial image, it could be some one else, or a reversed image:

Attachment 234616

Nothing much -- but love the color -- Scott

Leon 06-12-2016 11:37 AM

My statement was supposed to be in favor of the E92 types really being Cy. We are in agreement.

Do you have a link to that thread, Blair? I remembered this thread showing a newspaper article proving the Cy image was a reversed Irv: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...=124640&page=2

Hi Daryl,

Can't seem to find the originating thread, but check out post #26 of this thread where the issue arose again:

I still don't think this card was supposed to picture Cy Young just because it says Cy. Irv Young was called Cy Young back then, sometimes Cy the second, but do you really think they would write out all that on a card? In the early days, they had no problem repeating nicknames if players had the same last name. Even Harley Young was called Cy Young and he went 0-3 in his brief career. If you ever read old papers from when both Cy Young and Irv Young played, sometimes they called Cy Young "Old Cy Young" to differentiate the two players. In my opinion, there wasn't any mistake on that card.

AgonyandIvy 06-13-2016 07:21 PM

The 1963 Topps card #113 of Don Landrum is actually Ron Santo.
The 1959-1960 Topps Football cards of Green Bay Packers Jim Taylor actually are cards of Chicago Cardinals Jim Taylor.
