H&B 125 vs. 40

So I'm fairly new to bat collecting and trying read up on everything I can. I'd like to know exactly where H&B bats with 40 fits in. I know that they started using 125 in 1916. And that 125 is used the high grade wood. Before 125, 40 was used. But it seems like there are bats that are post 1916 that 40 is used. Does that just mean that its a lesser grade wood and store model at that point? Any explanation of the use of 40 in the center oval would be awesome. Thanks!

40 then followed by initials like 40BR for Babe Ruth are store model bats. So that is why you see 40 models going up in the 1930s and later.
