Ever Wondered What A Colgan's Chip Looked Like?

Posted By: <b>Dan Bretta</b><p>A few of you know that my uncle's house had a fire a few weeks back and my brother and I went over to help salvage what we could....luckily all of the family photos and boxes of memories survived. I was over at my brother's house tonight looking through boxes and spotted a Colgan's tin. Alas no card, but if you want to see what 100 year old gum looks like there were still two chips left in the tin.<br /><br /><a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/?action=view&current=00whatcouldhave003.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/00whatcouldhave003.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br /><br />My great grandma saved all kinds of candy and gum products...she wrote notes and dates on the wrappers.<br /><br /><a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/?action=view&current=00whatcouldhave008.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/00whatcouldhave008.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/?action=view&current=00whatcouldhave010.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/00whatcouldhave010.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/?action=view&current=00whatcouldhave012.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/00whatcouldhave012.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br /><br /><a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/?action=view&current=00whatcouldhave007.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/00whatcouldhave007.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a><br /><br />This was also in the same box with the gum - looks like an Ornate frame pin, but I don't know who is pictured on it.<br /><a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/?action=view&current=00whatcouldhave005.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/00whatcouldhave005.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

They pre-date my field of interest in regards to gum, but there are people out there that pay for that sort of thing. <br /><br />Here's a box of Bazooka from 1958, made by Topps...<br /><br /><img src="http://img.inkfrog.com/pix/ladypaper/DSCF0009x.jpg">

Posted By: <b>Rhett Yeakley</b><p>Dan, there were little cards of Civil War Generals that at one point came with Kis-Me gum so those little guys may have small paper thin cards in them. Not sure if they are from the same time frame or not.<br />-Rhett

Posted By: <b>Dan Bretta</b><p>No cards in the Kis-Me gum....they unwrap without any damage.<br /><br />Believe it or not there is even a half eaten box of chocolates from the same time period with all this stuff. Kind of nasty...you would think nothing would be left of chocolate, but you'd be wrong.<br /><br />Here's some more old candy that was in the box...not sure if these are Colgan's chips, but they are the exact same size.<br /><br /><a href="http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/?action=view&current=00whatcouldhave006.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/nudan92/bretta%20family%20archives/00whatcouldhave006.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Posted By: <b>Jeff Shepherd</b><p>Could be an early Necco product - famous for their wafers candy. Necco stands for New England Confectionery Company. I remember their historic factory in Cambridge, MA still emitting a sweet smell as you drove by up until 2003 when Novartis took the building over. Necco is now in Revere, MA and two other locations.

Ever Wondered What A Colgan's Chip Looked Like?

Posted By: <b>Fred C</b><p>I found a Colgans tin at an antique shop many years ago. I bought it because it would make a nice companion piece to the Colgans rounds I had. When I opened the tin there was gum and a card in it.<br /><br />That gum from 1958 looks a bit stale. Here's a fun story. I found a pile of cards in my son's room a few years ago. I was kind of happy because I thought he may be starting an interest in cards. I asked him where he got the cards and he told me the garage. I figured he pulled them from one of the 5K count boxes of cards I had. I found more cards in his room a few days later and I again asked where he got them. Again the reply was the garage. At that time I told him that I'd be more than happy to give him some "other" cards because those were a few years old and they're in numerical order in the big boxes. He then said he didn't get them from the big box, he got them from a smaller box and the gum didn't taste very good. He was pulling packs from a 20+ year old wax box. I guess the gum was a little stale.
