Beckett Grading Service Frustration

2 Attachment(s)
I am very frustrated with Beckett Grading Service. I have a 1954 Topps Jackie Robinson card that my Dad had graded by Beckett many years ago. At some point, Beckett accidently started re-issuing duplicate certification numbers and they have no record of this card. When you look it up on the Beckett website, it says that it is a 1990 Leaf Sammy Sosa card.

I contacted Beckett and their solution was to have me send the card in and pay to have it re-graded. Shouldn't they offer to do it for free since they messed up and duplicated the certification number? Has anyone run into this before?

I'm very disappointed in the customer service I've received.

I agree it would be gentlemanly if they comped the reholder.

That is a sharp card, Chris. Perhaps even nicer than a 6 based on what I can tell from my Iphone.

Sweet card.

If they really are accidentally reissuing cert #'s that's a terrifying turn of events that could lead to big trouble down the line. They should be clamoring to do this for free for you to avoid bad publicity.

If they won't do it gratis send to PSA...

Beckett should offer to reholder the card for free, but why would you even want the card in a Beckett holder? If you are going to go through the hassle of getting the card reholdered, you might as well just put it in a PSA holder.

I'd psa that thing. It's a really nice card.

I was hoping that they would just re-issue a new certification number for free but since they aren't going to do that I'm going to send it to PSA.

Thanks for the kind words.

With the looks of those edges, I'm surprised BVG considered that an 8 subgrade. But yes, if they duplicated their cert numbers, they should be on the hook to reholder the card. PSA definitely would.
Does it really matter that much that it doesn't show in the BGS Pop Report? Is there any question when you sell it that BVG actually graded the card in question and that the slab's not cracked? I wouldn't worry about it, unless you happen to be trying to do a set in BVG holders in their Set Registry.

I tried to sell the card on Ebay and the buyer backed out because he couldn't verify the certification number. My Dad has a handful of cards with this issue but I didn't realize this was one of them until I tried to sell it.

The card is not in a BVG holder.

When Beckett split their grading into two services, BGS and BVG holders,
I believe the numbering sequence for the BVGs created the possibility of something like this happening. They should fix it though.

Cards with the old low numbers, less than 5 real digits, do not show up on their cert check service. That I have seen.

Contact Derek Ficken - dficken@beckett.com and he'll get you taken care of on this. He's the SW Regional sales rep and is actually in the building at Beckett HQ in Dallas.

So you had a valid complaint about their service, and the remedy they offered you was to allow you to buy more of the very service you were complaining about?

THAT is lousy customer service!

Ridiculous!

I can't believe that Beckett would not take care of this for you. I would try emailing them with a link to this thread and see if they will reconsider.

I had the same issue with Beckett but they agreed to re-slab the card with a new certification number. Apparently a couple of years ago there was some glitch in their numbering system and several vintage cards were given certification numbers that matched up with newer cards. I was pretty aggressive with them because I believed this was their mistake and I shouldn’t have to pay anything to correct it. They agreed to re-slab at the same grade with a different certification number, although I have to pay shipping with insurance because I am not a Becket member and I am also not the person that had the card originally grated. In the end, I had to pay about $35 for shipping but they did everything else for free.
