2018 Hobby Goals!

With the 2017 Goals Thread, I thought it would be a good idea to see
what everyone might be doing in 2018 with their collections in terms of
adding or subtracting cards.

I made a lot of changes to my collections in 2017. These were some of my
pickups:

Bought E93 Cobb, M116 Cobb, 52 Bowman Mays,
Stahl Meyer Mantle, 53 Topps Mantle, Stahl Meyer Mays, Goudey Gehrig, 3 Autographed Jeters,
and some other odds and ends.

So here are my 2018 Goals:

1) Would love to add a nice Aaron rookie or Johnston cookie or Lake to Lake Aaron.

2) Maybe a Mantle, DiMaggio, or a couple odds and ends. That's about it.

DeanH3 12-20-2017 09:58 PM

Good luck in 2018 Tony. Looks like you added some tremendous pieces in 2017.

I'm going into 2018 with no specific goals this time. I'll just see what piques my interest when I see it. However, I do want to keep adding to my HOF player set.

Good luck to all in 2018. I can't believe I'm saying 2018. Where does the time go?

Vintagevault13 12-21-2017 06:42 AM

I hope to complete my 1972 Topps Set. I still need a little over 200 cards, but I have finished the high #s so this makes it a little less daunting. I am leaning toward starting the 1971 set, but we will see if that changes after I finish the 72’s.

In no particular order:

- an e99 in affordable condition (preferably in an SGC holder) to complete my 2017 goal (one of each card from the E90s series)
- T206 Nap Lajoie (throwing) in SGC A or 10 (back damage)
- T206 Mordecai Brown (portrait) in SGC A or 10 (back damage)
- frame old newspaper and magazine supplements (I need advice on this)
- continue with my Ed Reulbach collection

Small goals for a small-time collector. But as with everything in the universe, that is how it all begins - small....

Neal 12-21-2017 07:33 AM

For 2018, my goal is to continue to refine my collection. I have been doing a decent job of it for the past two years but I look to slow down on the selling portion - most of what I still own is in my permanent collection. I still have some more cards to let go of, but I am really looking mainly to add.

That said, here is what I am looking for in 2018:

- 1933 Goudey Ruth 149 PSA 2-4
- 1957 and 1960 Spic and Span Aaron PSA 5-7
- 1965 MacGregor Mays PSA 5ish
- 1947 Bond Bread Jackie (any pose) PSA 3ish

I hope everyone had a great collecting year and wish everyone Seasons Greetings and a Happy Collecting New Year!

jason.1969 12-21-2017 08:05 AM

If I win the lottery I will be looking for a 1933 goudey Babe Ruth and a 1934 goudey Lou Gehrig.

Short of that I will hope to add one or two Hank Aaron cards I don't already have such as Hires root beer or Lakes to Lakes Dairy. Also any Sir Isaac Newton cards I don't have and will possibly look to start a team set for 1958 Topps Dodgers.

Not to be redundant, as I posted in the main page thread, but I wanted to make sure all eyes see it in the case that someone has one to sell in late February -

1953 Topps Complete Set - with PSA 5ish Mantle, Mays, Paige, Robinson
1952 Bowman Complete Set
1970-1977 Topps Football Sets - preferably multiple sets with a scale discount
1970-1974 Topps Basketball Sets - same as above
1953-1955 Red Man Sets Tabs preferred but will take a combination of tab/no tab.

Please reach out if you have any of the above available. Bonus comes the last week in February and that is where I carve out my annual card budget. I know that REA is about that same time, so if you are thinking about sending to them, sell to me instead and we can split the juice.

Thanks
Kevin

For post war I'd like to pick up a rose RC and a couple of signed Mantles.

Bestdj777 12-21-2017 06:30 PM

I collect Mantle items and game used Yankees hats. Currently need the matchbook discussed in my signature and three hats to complete my collection. I am not optimistic that any of them will pop up, but I'm gonna search.

This last year I took a huge pay cut, bought a house, and had a kid. The quality of my life substantially improved but the quality of my collection did not.

TheNightmanCometh 12-21-2017 06:59 PM

My goal is to have a complete Braves Topps base card run from 1956 to today. I'm about 44 cards short, including 10 Aaron's.

2018 Goals

Finish my Master set of 1962 Post Cereal Baseball - 27 to go
Work on my Master set of 1963 Post Cereal Baseball - 40 to go
Work on Detroit Tigers and Lions team sets

Thecafewha 12-22-2017 01:43 PM

Since I finished my 1962 Venezuelan Topps set this year I'll be looking to upgrade some cards in 2018.

I'll also try to finish my 1964 Venezuelan Topps set.

I'll like add a 1950's Mantle as well.

Well,

Picked up a couple of grails in 2017 - September 15,1960 Horne's department store Clemente and 1968 Clemente Test disc.

2018 goals - well it's been a goal for about the last 20 years so perhaps this will be the year......
1960 Complete Bazooka box with Clemente.......anybody?

Other than that, always on the lookout for rare Clemente cards and memorabilia I don't know exist and working on a run of Topps Pirates Team sets from 1955-1973 with my children. Also starting to dabble in Venezuelan pirates.

Oh yeah, a couple more - 1959 Venezuelan Mantle and 1959 Venezuelan Koufax.

jiw98 12-23-2017 01:35 PM

Finishing my 55 Bowman Baseball didn't go as expected last year, so I guess I'll give it the ole college try again this year. Officially down to 43 cards to complete the set. That includes the variations.
I had hoped to reduce the number at the National this past summer, but that working stuff really cuts into my free time.:D Maybe 2018 will be the year!
I wish everyone good luck on their collecting goals in the coming year.

Bigdaddy 12-23-2017 07:43 PM

First of all, I'd like to sell off some of my duplicates and maybe even cull down the collection. I've got a couple of lots of '61 and '66 Topps left over from putting together sets and some other post war cards that need to find other homes.

And with those funds, I'd like to:
  • Finish a '71/'72 Topps Basketball set - so close now
  • Finish a second '71 baseball set and sell off the extras
  • Add a couple of signed '64 Topps Giants to my son's collection
  • Chip away at my master (mainstream Topps only) Mantle and Mays sets - still some low hanging fruit here
  • Add a few more T206 SLers from the Virginia League

I'm sure though I'll get distracted during the year and probably start another set.

Exhibitman 12-23-2017 09:18 PM

Postwar 1945-80 baseball cards: I’d like to add a few more 1952 Topps cards; a decent 1960 Bell Koufax; a 1969 Kahn’s Hank Aaron small.

Brooks Robinson/Orioles

I have a couple of goals for 2018 related to collecting listed below:

1. I started a Brooks Robinson autograph run of his regular issue cards from 1957 through 1978, all in pen, a couple months ago. I’d like to complete the run in 2018. Thought it would be a fun side project that I can’t believe I haven’t done yet since I’ve been collecting Brooksie stuff for so long now. I thought I’d have a couple already, but I only had one signed card in pen in all the junk I have acquired over the years. I really don’t want to get in a hurry, which is my tendency, and have to go back an upgrade, but I have already picked up a couple which are not really the quality I wanted, but picked up to fill the gap. I guess a secondary goal with this is have some restraint.

2. Sell some items that I’ll never display or not crazy about. Use this as my spending money to pick up some more displayable items.

3. Complete my sports (currently junk) room. It was pretty much complete a couple of years ago, but I wanted to go more non cluttered and more of a nicer room/den. It’s not very large, but it’s got potential. Also, my son got married and when he purchased a home I gave him the tv, cabinet, etc. out of the room so I’ll need those as well. I’m sure anyone with a room dedicated to your collection knows it will never be really done or complete, but I’m just wanting it to be a functional room rather than a place used for storage.

The above is probably enough for one year.

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

CharleyBrown 12-24-2017 06:49 AM

After taking some time off due to a home purchase, I am looking forward to picking up the following in 2018:

1) 1956 Topps Jackie Robinson
2) 1950 Bowman Jackie Robinson
3) One of the following:
a) 1953 Canadian Exhibits Jackie Robinson Green Tint
b) 1954 NY Journal American Jackie Robinson
c) 1955 Golden Stamps Jackie Robinson
d) 1949 Eureka Stamps Jackie Robinson

39special 12-24-2017 07:10 AM

I would like to get closer to finishing my '47-'66 Exhibit set.And pickup some more oddball
Carl Furillo cards.

sedin26 12-24-2017 09:19 AM

Having just purchased a home, I think cards will slow down for a few months. However, here's what I'm planning for the next year:

Complete 1958 Topps Set (Need 137 more). No Yellow letters at this time - maybe in 2019

Complete 1948 Bowman (Currently have 7)

Work on 1953 Bowman Colour & B&W (Just started)

Start and complete 1975-76 OPC WHA Hockey

Chuck9788 12-25-2017 09:10 AM

To complete my "All HOF" collection.

Still lots of Goudey and Play Ball cards needed.

I've spent a boat load this holidays. However, when I get better back on my feet I 'll be most searching out for ... Dizzy Dean, Rogers Hornsby, Bill Terry and Al Simmons cards as being reasonable goals in 2018.

Ruth, Cobb, Wagner or Gehrig cards ...... If I literally fall into a pile of cash.

NewEnglandBaseBallist 12-26-2017 06:14 AM

Trying to come as close as possible to completing the 1967 Topps Venezuelan Major League set. Currently at 114/150. Also continue to add more T210 Old Mill's to my collection.

geosluggo 12-30-2017 05:01 PM

I departed from my set-building ways in 2017 and tried to pick up Clemente, Aaron and Mays cards from when they were active players (not post-career tribute cards, etc.) and made substantial progress. Still need an Aaron rookie and pre-1954 Topps and Bowman Mays cards, but don't anticipate adding these unless I win the lottery, which I never play.

I also plan to return to my comfort zone in 2018 and work on completing my 1958 Topps set. I need about 160 cards but already have most of the key cards.

If I finish 1958, my next target is 1959 Topps, where I probably need 250-300 cards, including both Mantles, the Gibson rookie and other high-value cards. If I knock out 1958 and 1959 I'll have a complete run of Topps sets from 1956 through the 1990s.

2018 Postwar goals are to continue to add to my Roberto Clemente PC and pick up HOF RCs with the 1951 Bowman Willie Mays being my top target.

Blackie 12-31-2017 05:20 PM

My goal is to complete a 64 Topps baseball set raw to be placed in a binder. Wanna work on one set a year and always loved the plan vanilla look of the set. Not sure but its one of my favorites.

Great pick ups! All very tough "cards". Any chance you would consider a trade for the 5 of spades?

irv 01-01-2018 07:18 AM

No real goals other than to add to my 52 Topps collection when I can.

I spent quite a bit of money this year on cards and with our recent new car purchase plus some recent and upcoming home reno's, my collecting pace will likely be a lot slower than it was last year, unfortunately.

Good luck to everyone reaching their goals. :)

Crossed these off the list

Jwkeen 01-09-2018 07:36 PM

My goals are to make as much progress as I can on my run of Topps sets. I don’t expect to finish the 52 this year, as I need 39 high numbers, but hope to finish everything else. That would be fifteen cards for the 53 set and sixteen for the 51 blue back. Hopefully make a little progress on my Bowman run as well. Then maybe I can concentrate more on some pre-war sets.
