A Great Board

Posted By: Jim VB
Anyone who has been paying attention for the last couple of years knows that I have been chasing cards from one particular set. These cards rarely, if ever hit the auction market (last time was in 2005.)

Recently some were listed in an auction.

As you might expect, I got a couple of emails from friends alerting me to this auction, just in case I had missed it. I also got a few more emails from 2-3 board members who I know less well, or had only had one or two conversations with.

But I also got 3-4 emails from people I did not know at all, people who rarely, if ever post here, but apparently, read the board and had mentally filed away my want list. One even refered to himself as a "lurker."

To my friends I say: "What? Do you think I'm so stupid that I'd wait this long and then miss them? Give me a break?"

But to all of the others I offer a sincere and heartfelt "Thank You!" To me, that's what makes this board great. Despite all the time we fight with each other, disagree with each other, ridicule each other, we are all here for the same reason. Vintage cards.

Thank you!

Posted By: leon
That is very cool. I too have gotten emails from folks that never post and want to help with something. I have picked up some things I really chreish that way. That and the collective wisdom of the board never ceases to amaze me. Congrats on the pick up.....

Posted By: Jeff Lichtman
Jim, I'm completely ignorant on pricing when it comes to that issue. Due to the rarity, however, I assumed you did ok. If not, we'll hunt Rob D down and at the very least make him take a course in freshman physics -- twice!

Posted By: Jim VB
Kenneth,

Jeff nailed it, but my point was less the issue, and more the good nature of the board. To get 9-10 emails and most from people I don't know well (or at all) was great. Sometimes unsolicited, private emails are very pleasant.

Jeff,

There's a response for you over on the BST.

I did get only one "death wish" email this week, so maybe I'm doing OK.

Jeff,

My Dad collected these as a 16 year old kid in NYC in 1932. At the time they were passed to me, I was much more into collecting 1950's and 1960's Topps. I asked around a little bit and a few experts told me I had a complete set at 18 cards.

Fast forward many years. I never looked at them. They were finally cataloged by SCD somewhere in the early 2000's. Late 2005 I noticed them in the book and realized they listed 22 cards which meant I was missing 4. Been looking ever since.

Because they were as "regional" as you can get, (Giants were probably the number 3 team in NYC.), and because they were a write-in promotion and never really "distributed" anywhere, there aren't very many around.

Posted By: Michael Steele
Congrats Jim! Always a great feeling to find something after looking for so long. One quick and maybe stupid question. Lew says this was a near complete set at 22 with Walker missing. Is a complete set now at 23 and do you have them all?

Posted By: Jim VB
The lot from Lew includes 2 different versions of the Hubbell card. No one knows why for sure, but there are two different Hubbells. One is on thick postcard stock, like all the others in the set. One is on thin paper stock. The thin version is also printed with reverse side oriented opposite of the thick cards. (The schedule appears behind the feet vs. behind the players heads on the thick ones.)

Lew has guessed that they (the Giants) printed, or reprinted, Hubbell as some sort of promotion.

The thin Hubbell is very common. There are usually one or two on Ebay at any given time. Depending upon condition, I have paid anywhere from $20-$75 for this card ( I have a few.)

The thick Hubbell and all of the other players are very rare.

Edited to answer the actual question you asked - I already have a Walker, so yes, I'm now done. I still think of the set as 22, not 23. The thin Hubbell is "different".

Fronts:

Backs:
