Vintage Photos showing Sports Memorabilia
1 Attachment(s)
on occasion I've run across images (photos / snapshots) which feature specific items which WE as sports collectors consider sports memorabilia or collectibles displayed.....whether it's a shot similar to the one shown in a prior thread entitled CHI-FEDS Federal League Pennant or a snapshot of a beaming eight-year-old proudly holding, for example, a decal bat or an early sports-related board game he received as a birthday present, I find this type of image has relevance within the sports-collectibles field as they make neat, one of a kind additions when displayed with the actual item that is shown within the image, such as the one seen below, a photo postcard which features a man "playing" Take Me Out To The Ballgame on a player piano with the sheet music shown at left.....
would love to see any similar photos - the earlier the better - that others may have which falls into this particular category, as these vintage images make great companion pieces in our display cases and binders. DS . |
Nice idea for a thread.

Just picked up this photo....
Looks like Willie gave out Auravision Records to all the kids who stopped by his place. It's interesting that this photo is dated 1963 and the Auravision Records are listed as a 1964 Issue. I guess these kids got the first prototypes! Jimmy... I think my next companion piece pickup will be a no-brainer! If I recall, the Mays Auravision Record is the most expensive of the set (Hope I'm wrong!) |

as always, some great material - I constantly see items in photos and think how cool it would be to actually OWN the items shown...
perezfan - the Willie Mays with Auravision record (nice pick-up, by the way) reminded me that I have this vintage 1960's 8 x 10 showing Willie with one of his Hartland Statues atop a cake at a "Willie Mays Fan Club" event at Mount Zion Hospital: DS . |
Wow... that's even cooler. What a great photo to display with his Hartland (King of Clout style, of course!)
|
Speaking of Hartland statues...let's not forget this vintage linen postcard of Henry The Home Run Chicken!

Haven't been able to find out anything about this photo.

Wow... some great stuff in that one! Sure wish more of those nifty figural pieces survived. Are those gloves/mitts hanging in the background? I am getting a headache staring at them, and not being able to figure out what they are!

Window Display

that's an amazing window display - I too wonder how many of those figures are still around.
speaking of window displays, here's a sample from a batch of 8x10s of early National Baseball Week displays (I'll post the others in a new thread once I get around to scanning them). DS . |
Mays was in 1962 Auravision
Mays was part of the 1962 Auravision set, as well as the 1964 issue.

Gehrig showing of items in his Trophy room; Type 1 photos, A bat, balls and trophies(Type 1 photo). It is interesting...there is a certain trophy missing in this one that you can see in one of Jimmy's photos below. This is one is most likely prior to Gehrig day.

During a Rain Out in the 1915 World Series. Rookie Southpaw George Herman along with a few teammates spend an afternoon looking at news service photos of themselves, teammates, and their fellow ballplayers at the offices of Underwood & Underwood.
I wonder if they got to take a couple home with them! Attachment 17194 |
Nice photo Jimmy - that is Hick Cady just to the right of Ruth, and Ernie Shore next to Cady, and the asymmetrically eared Ray Collins far right.

Neat thread!
Here's a shot of Frank "Home Run" Baker at home in 1955 after finding out he would be inducted in the Hall that year. Would love to have his bat, glove, trophies and the baseballs. Wonder where they are? http://www.qualitycards.com/pictures/hrbaker2.jpg |
Baseball HOF Display in Credit union window
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...oreDisplay.jpg
This shows many items from the baseball hall of fame that were on display in a credit union? window. The Doubleday ball, 1939 flag, autographed balls, next to framed HOF plaques, a huge display baseball, rittinger's set, and a Ruth jersey. |
The other (rarer) Rittgers set is in there too... just to the left of the window divider. Great shot!

Joe E. Brown - a noteworthy collector
His prized possessions included Hall of Famer Tris Speaker's spikes from the 1920 World Series; Pittsburgh Pirate Paul Waner's bat from one of Big Poison's National League batting title years (Waner's younger brother Lloyd, also an excellent hitter, was known as "Little Poison"); a Babe Ruth bat from the Bambino's legendary 60-home run season in 1927; and Gas House Gang pitcher Dizzy Dean's St. Louis Cardinals uniform from the 1934 World Series, which eventually found its way to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Brown's most prized item, however, was a gift from his New York Yankee pal Lou Gehrig. At the end of the 1939 season, in which Gehrig had given his now celebrated "luckiest man on the face of the Earth" speech (after being forced from the game by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), the "Iron Horse" gave Brown his last first baseman's glove which he played his 2,130 consecutive games. It meant everything to Gehrig, but he wanted to make sure it would pass into hands that would truly cherish it. Joe kept these many trophies in his Room of Love:

Does anyone know where the Gehrig 2000th game trophy is, because i remember philip weiss auctions sold a piece that may have been the top of the trophy and wondered whether it was or not.

Nowhere near the scale of the items you guys have been sharing, but here are pictures of vendors hawking Opening Day programs from the first games at Citi Field last year...
April 3, 2009: the first Mets game at Citi Field - an exhibition game v. the Boston Red Sox... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3600/...14849fd1_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3379/...206eec5d_b.jpg April 13, 2009: the very first Major League game at Citi Field - Mets v. the San Diego Padres... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3658/...ce0f4abf_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3404/...bb59b630_b.jpg When they have giveaway days, I like to take pictures of the items being given away... in this context the "money shots" are the ones showing the items at the moment they're being handed to the fans, and the ones showing quantities of the giveaway item. Since this forum deals with historic memorabilia, I'll show some pictures of the "Citi Field Replica" given away to fans attending the August 23, 2009 game against Philadelphia... that was the game that ended on Eric Bruntlett's unassisted triple play, only the second time ever that a game ended in such a fashion... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3422/...d7314dc4_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3426/...fff4dfc4_b.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3421/...04fb7ce7_b.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2585/...48455254_b.jpg |
Really interesting pictures, Gary. Great job!

I sold this last year, but it was a REALLY cool photo. Venders selling 1915 Cracker Jacks with a display set up with some cards being shown. The Honus Wagner card is leaning against some of the boxes to promote them. I have never seen another vintage photo with anything but common T cards in them so this was pretty unique.
