Thanks Jeff. Your postcard set is GREAT! I have had that set for sometime as welll and it is very hard to peice together to say the least. I was luck to get mine as a complete set. I should get them graded too, they look amazing in the SGC holders. Did you buy them one by one or did you buy it complete? Nice site as well!
|
Thanks! I started buying them one by one, then the great Steve Murray was nice enough to help me complete it. Pretty tough set to complete, but now with yours I know of at least 3 of them, probably a couple more tucked away in private collections. Did you buy your set through Lipset, I know he auctioned one off a few years ago.
|
No I did not buy mine from Lew. I got mine from a Ephemera show in the mid 80's. I paid $30 bucks each and $75 for the Detroit. The dealer had $50 each on them and $100 for the Detroit but I talked her down :-) Man those where the days! I know of the set Lew had, one in another collection, yours and mine. So that is a lot more than I thought complete. I wonder how many more there could be? Do you have any W601's full size?
|
|
Steve very nice W601's! I just love how they really covered all the teams. Is that all that you have? Thanks for sharing.

Wow, nice prices! I had to pay a little more than that. :) Did you see the Detroit card in SCP that recently sold for just under $10k? I don't have any of the full-size Premiums, I did have the 1905 Detroit one but had to give it up in order to get the PC. |
No I didn't??? I have been out of the hobby for a few years. But wow $10k really??? I guess the rookie card collectors have finally said "Ok postcards are cards." :) It really shocks me sometimes when things go so far up in price, but like I said before these are so tough to find. I guess we can both sau we are glad we got yours early! Now if I could have only loved the carmels cards a little sooner. :(

Here's mine:

I really enjoy all the Sporting Life issues: the W601 composites, postcards and the W600 cabinets.
Jeff, your postcard set is incredible. I cannot believe that you pieced it together - it really has a consistent look to it. What an accomplishment. Why does SGC label them as 1906-07? I am pretty sure that the set was produced right after the 1906 World Series and immediately offered directly to their readers via ads in their newspaper. |

When you look at the subjects and their teams in the Postcard set, it is obvious that they were made at the end of the 1906 season - right after the World Series. For example, Rossman is shown with Cleveland - his 1906 team. He was traded to Detroit in December of 1906. The Sporting Life was pretty meticulous on updating all of their issues, so it is fairly safe to assume that the Postcard set was issued before this transaction took place. |
Nice catch Kevin, I'm writing an article on the postcard set, mind if I cite that example?

W601 "Champions"
Regarding the pencil notations on the Rockford example above and Pittsburg "Champions for 1904" as well as MANY other examples in this set, it was customary at the time to be "Champions" for 1903 if you won the flag in 1902. (champs in 1904 for the 1903 flag, etc.)

Amazing stuff Trevor and others.
Jeff those PC are just great! |

Jim, nice booklet even though it looks like some pages are cut out. Here are all the years they made the booklets which started in 1904. Glenn, nice Pelican image. W601s were also issued as a complete set in a binder. So, thats why you see some with the three punch holes in them, which means they were taken out of the factory binder.

Jay, I ended up with both NL and AL schedules, both were pretty beat up but complete except the cover for the AL schedule. I love em and have no qualms about using them as rookie ephemera for my no-no collection. I really doubt there are very many of these schedules left. Besides I have a Cobb rookie:D Although I gave it to my son to perhaps ignite some interest in vintage baseball...

I have the mounted photograph "proof" used for the 1903 Athletic's. The only one of these I have ever seen...
Has "Champions of 1902" and the players name and position written on the back. The only change prior to production was the reduction of Connie Mack's image in the circle, so perhaps there were different ones and they picked the other or reshot it with the text and new Mack image. |
