How Bad is your Addiction

Posted By: Jerry
I would like to ask the question, How often do you have to pick up a new card or cards to satisfy your addiction? Back when I had more disposable income, I needed something coming at all times to keep me happy.
Now that I am retired and don't have the disposable income, I use to have , I trained myself to withstand the withdrawal pains of going periods of time without Cardboard satisfaction.

When I got back into collecting, I acquired cards of any issue that I could get my hands on. Since then, I've managed to focus my collecting habits, which helps keep the addiction under control.

How Bad is your Addiction

Posted By: Dan Bretta
I like to get something at least once a week....hopefully within my focus. It has been at least 6-7 months since the last Lincoln Chiefs/Athletics item showed up on ebay and that's the longest stretch I can ever remember and it's driving me crazy because there are lots of items that I NEED. It's a good thing I have a few other areas that I focus on.

Posted By: peter chao
Guys,

Here's what I do to try to stay within my budget. I designate a portion of my collection as trade bait. What I find fun about our hobby is that the retailers can't buy our cards retail, they have to buy from us or another retailer. So I go through my collection and come up with cards that I could live without.

Out of my 200,000 or so cards I've come up with about 150. I consider these my trade bait cards. Their good cards but I can live without them. Among these cards I have a Marichal rookie, a '54 Duke Snider etc. So everytime I see a card I have to have but can't afford, I take my trade bait cards with me when I go to the card store.

You can't take it personally when they don't want your card. The may want it next time when their inventory changes. I offer the store owner a dozen trade bait cards and some money in exchange for a must have card. It works almost everytime.

Peter

How Bad is your Addiction

Posted By: nbrazil
my addiction is pretty bad. it's really the lack of focus that gets me. I'm a T206 and HOF rookie collector (i know, two big tasks), but i sometimes get drawn into other sets. Right now i have a T3 card and several '15 CJs...i know i cant afford to get either of those sets when im collecting what im already collecting...but, i still bought them.

what i usually end up doing is keeping the item for awhile...purge whatever emotional/cognitive/physical/emotional/spritual satisfaction/attachment i get from it (i.e. i display it in a bookcase, look and hold it every other day, sleep with it at night, take it for a walk in the park, make mad, passionate love to it)...then sell it off. I tell myself all the time that it's a piece of cardboard...sell it, damnit, sell it!!

We've created the 12-set program to set cardaholics free. What we do is put 12 of your favorite vintage sets together and start a bonfire...it will set you free.

Peter
