ID this 1911 White Sox player and ballpark?
Love this ChiSox action pose from the Ernie Harwell collection and that appears to be a 1911 White Sox road uniform, but can anyone pinpoint the player and ballpark?
http://digitalcollections.detroitpub...ndora%3A164440 Thought the "OFC Rye" ad might be in Chicago's South Side Park, as it didn't have large stands behind the RF wall, but that doesn't match 1911, since the White Sox opened Comiskey that year, and they wouldn't wear dark road unis in Chicago. |
The park is Hilltop park in New York..player could be Harry Lord

That would make an awesome t206
I concur with Don def Hilltop. |
That is a beautiful shot!

Thanks all, happy to learn more about Hilltop Park! I agree this appears to be Harry Lord, based on similar shots:
https://baseballhistorydaily.files.w...13/11/lord.jpg Interesting that O.F.C. Rye swapped their billboard from right field (in front of the distinctive peaked building) to the left field side between that first photo and this panorama shot. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...circa_1910.jpg If I guess correctly, the left field O.F.C. Rye billboard is the same mentioned in NY's sign-stealing "Wigwag Scheme of 1909." http://www.thenationalpastimemuseum....ag-scheme-1909 |
Wow! Great pic. Absolutely classic. Great background info too. I always enjoy learning more about the history of the game - where teams pkayed and what those fields/stadiums looked like.
