Sporting Life advertising of t206s and m116s - new info

Posted By: runscott
Hi everyone - I just received 20 issues of Sporting Life from 1910, thinking I would be sure to get one of the famous t206 ads, based on info in Lipset's guide. Didn't happen. Here's the info from Lipset's guide, followed by my new info. And m116 size is included!

"The American Tobacco Company continued advertising the cards in 1910 in Sporting Life. However the ads stopped abruptly in May. The reason appeared obvious when Sporting Life advertised their own baseball card series in the June 11, 1910 issue..."

Apparently the t206 ads were discontinued before March 5 and by May 28 Sporting Life had already produced and advertised the first three series.

I have issues from March 5, 12 and 26, and from April 9 and 16, etc. None of these complete issues contains a t206 ad. The next issue I have is May 28, and it contains the Sporting Life m116 ad mentioned in Lipset's book. Also, my oldest issue, March 5, contains the Sporting Life cabinets ad, complete with a checklist of all players in case anyone's interested.

"Picture Cards of Base Ball Players
Given to Readers Who Comply.....
"Sporting Life is now engaged in the publication of a continuous series of beautiful picture cards, twelve to a series, each card containing the portrait of a prominent base ball player, in colors, size 1 1/2 x 2 5/8 inches, in the form commonly known as cigarette-pictures."

The ad also lists the players in series 1-3 and has a coupon for ordering any of the three 12-card series for 4 cents! It also says that Series 4 is in course of preparation and will be announced next week (1st week of June).

Posted By: David
Perhas of further interest, some of the old circa 1910-11 Sporting Lifes have small adds for the James Jeffries Champsionship Boxers. This was an nice boxing playing card set that featured the day's big stars, like Jeffries, Sulivan, Atel (of Black Sox note), etc.

Posted By: leon
We have ways of taking care of unsavory, anonymous, characters on our board....I am sure we can get some help in the matter if Mr. T206 want's to throw a jab and not be recognized....If I am not mistaking one of our rules is to be civil and throw jabs only if you are taking ownership...I might throw a hook every now and then but my name is there to be reckoned with...and here I am ..(how can you get mad at a smiley face ?)..there are folks who monitor the board that will back this up, I believe....best regards ..your pal....

Posted By: runscott
The link that "t206museum" provided was very informative. And I am forced to admit now (I hide my face in shame) that I haven't read every item ever written concerning every card issue in existence...but I'm working on it. If I ever post duplicate info, please just ignore it - I'm getting my jollies anyway.

Dadgumit, I just can't resist. Okay, I confess to having accessed the t206museum site constantly for the first three months I collected t206's. The news there is great, especially the backs multipliers list. There are also two articles (well, copies of someone else's articles) about the recent Wagner/Piedmont back discovery, and the mysterious blurry upside-down image on the front is also mentioned. But curiously, no one asked the question - who is the upside-down image of? or "why are the borders so friggin uneven?" And why, oh great and powerful Oz, might this bit of information give us additional insights into the origins of this card?

Dick Vitale imitation) "It's printers scrap, baby!"

After examining a clearer scan it became obvious that the upside-down image was Honus himself. My God, could some of us be learning this for the first time !?! ...no, Cycleback already featured an article that mentioned that fact, and several board members had also come to the same conclusion, and discussed it with one another. Gee, without consulting the t206museum!?!

I haven't accessed their site since (I'm weened), but I admit that it is fantastic for beginning t206 collectors, and I'm real impressed that they discovered the date corrections for Lipset's guide. But if you want in-depth information on t206's you have to go elsewhere - sorry, it's a fact. Maybe the depth can be found in their message board discussions? Let's take a look...oops...in one of the two messages that have been posted over the last two weeks...a veritable plethora of interest there.

Okay, I'm through. Please don't ban me from the t206museum message board...I think I would notice someday

Posted By: David
I don't want to nitpick-- there's no doubt that the Piedmond Wagner is a pile of scrap, but I don't think it's conclusive that the upside down image is of Wagner. In fact the MastroNet representative (that's secret spy code for Doug Allen) I had talked to before writing the brief article said the upside down image was of someone else.

And, dear readers, I point out that it was Scott Forrest, of runscott fame, who pointed out to me the 'smudge' in the picture that turned out to be the upside down overprint. I'm sure I wouldn't have noticed it if weren't for Scott.

Lastly, I am ignorant about many of the subtle variations in the T206 issue, in particular the back variations, and The Residents (pun intended) at t206museum, along with other collectors, have been helpful and repsonsive to my questions about the cards.

Posted By: runscott
Printed off two copies of a clearer image that was sent to me, studied them very carefully, and felt that based on details in the "blurry image", it was clearly Wagner.

This wasn't something that it took a t206 expert to figure out, just someone that took the time to look carefully.

But I'm glad there's some disagreement. I'll get to work on the scans and draw something up that shows what I'm saying, pointing out the details. Might be good for Cycleback if you don't mind including images.

Thanks!

Posted By: runscott
Don't have much to add to that, but you're right, it isn't Wagner. When I turned the image upside-down and super-imposed the two, it was off. Oh well, I reacted too quickly because I was pissed off. As penance, I will figure out who the other image is and post.
