Card Show in Los Angeles Area

Leon...feel free to delete if necessary...

I am not affiliated with the following site at all, in fact, I had barely heard of them until one of my longtime dealer buddies called last night inviting me to a show. First show in Los Angeles area in years and I have a feeling turnout might be light due to the lack of advertising of this show. The website is below and I know there are a few collectors left in the area (Myself, Adam, Peter, etc.) The show is in Glendale this weekend, 5/6-5/8. I plan to attend and wanted to see if anyone else was going. Still not sure if I am going Saturday or Sunday.

I plan to go and would like to meet some 54'ers. Sunday would probably be better for me since I just had surgery and still need some time to get up and around.
If I make it, I'll be the dude on crutches :(

I'm going on Saturday but not sure for how long. Working in Burbank on that day so will pop in for a couple of hours. I think the entry fee is only $3.

Would be great if there are a few vintage dealers with reasonable prices and some things that I don't see on ebay everyday, but I'm not expecting much.

If anyone wants my cell number to meet up, PM me and I'll get it to you.

Joshua,

You probably remember me. We met in Santa Clarita for the
Eddie Frierson's play, Matty: An Evening with Christy Mathewson.
I'm planning on going to the show on Saturday around noon.

I think your rite. I too am figuring with little advertising, along
with it being Mother's Day weekend, attendance will be light.

With the Hollywood Park show having desolved, this is going
to be the first show in the SoCal area in recent memory.
With only 130 tables, it'll be small. Who knows, maybe it'll
be the start of some shows around here again.

PM me if you decide to go on Saturday and maybe we'll try to
meet.

Nice... I hope I can make it there.

Griffins 05-05-2011 11:37 PM

I'll be there at some point on Saturday.

Exhibitman 05-06-2011 07:02 AM

I'll be there Saturday; it's practically in my back yard (Burbank to Glendale)

Wite3 05-06-2011 07:43 AM

I will be there saturday morning/afternoon-ish. Looking forward to seeing some people and buying some cards. I know if you are not condition sensitive, one of the dealers setting up is Paul M. who often has tons of vintage cards that are priced from good to okay.

Just curious, and admittedly, this is a question coming from across the country from someone who doesn't know the nuances of Los Angeles: Why, if there hasn't been a show in the area for years -- meaning there's no worry about scheduling against competition -- would you pick Mother's Day weekend as your dates?

maybe?

Maybe the promoter is hoping to cash in on all of those Mothers Day gift purchases of cards? I can see it now "Hey Ma, check out the great centering on this T206 I got for you!!"

Agree that the timing is bizarre. And on REA auction weekend as well. No promotion in the area that I've seen either.

botn 05-06-2011 11:24 AM

I put up a link to the show a month ago in a post and asked the same question. Why on weekend that is both Mother's Day and REA?

When I had not come across any ad for the show I wrote to the promoter, who seems like a really nice guy, to see if the show was still happening and he told me it was and that they are advertising in the SMR, PSA's site, auctionreport.com, Beckett, the San Gabriel News and LA Daily.

I thought I would be able to make it there but too much going on.

Just a heads up for anybody interested. Listed under Dealers Attending Show: Goodwin & Co. are listed, but Bill couldn't make it.

I didn't know about the show until I saw it posted here. Thanks for the heads up. It's not very often we get a show around here so I took advantage. I collect equipment/memorabilia so I post more on the other forum. I saw a lot of raw and graded cards. I personally thought I saw a lot more vintage stuff than the shiny new stuff. Traffic was light for the show, but I heard some people say it was good for a Friday. I hope it does better tomorrow and Sunday (Autograph guests come those days). Dealers were nice and willing to work with people on prices and some folks even shared some of their knowledge to a novice card person like me. I was grateful for their time considering some folks took a long trek to get to the show. I had a good time walking around and picked up a 20's trophy ball and a HUGE barnstorming panoramic featuring Grover Cleveland Alexander and Dazzy Vance. I snapped some photos of cards/memorabilia I saw (sorry if they're not that great, I just wanted to give those who were going a heads up). Please keep in mind there were a couple tables (6-7) that had more graded pre 40's cards. (I thought I snapped those as well, sorry I think I missed them). Also, they do have a snack bar, but not many places to sit.

I went down today and the show was GREAT for me. Shows like this really remind me of the good old days... Smallish show, hardly any shinny stuff, good vintage selection (thanks to Paul), lots of friendly faces, GREAT dealer communication and I even found a T213 and T3 that I need, at what I though was a very fair price. Thanks Paul and John. Man I wish shows where they way we bought our cards today. Nothing beats talking to people who collect what you do, seeing the cards in person, and getting to meet baseball greats. Bob Gibson was very nice and a great signer. Great show, great people, $3 to get in, my kid was free!!!, man this is what makes me love this hobby. Bring back the show!!!!!!

Nice seeing Adam very briefly :-) Hi Adam!!!

Still a happy collector,
Trevor

i was happy to support it but didn't find much of interest. Met up with ErikV and his daughter for a minute or two which was nice. Didn't see anything out of the ordinary. There was a Lajoie Novelty Cutlery but they wanted $3500 for it which I thought was about $1000 too high given the condition. Prices were up there and were a bit too far out for me to make an offer on. Also, nothing I was dying to have or anything that I wasn't going to see again.

Still nice to see a show in this area and I would happily go again.

Re: Card Show in Los Angeles Area

I enjoyed checking out the show today. I had a chance to
meet Jason and a few new as well as old friends. I was told
by one of my dealer friends that this was the first SoCal show
in five years! As such, the venue was about the right size and
the attendance was as I expected, not terribly crowded.

Overall I was impressed with a pretty good selection of vintage
cards (a good mix of graded and non-graded material). Most of
the stuff I saw was a bit overpriced I thought. Nothing caught
my eye, so I left the show empty handed. I did submit a couple
of autographs to PSA/DNA.

I'd like to hope this will be the start of card shows out here again!

Nice to see Joshua and Trevor. Picked up a few strips and a 48 Signal Oil Lombardi:
