N167's on ebay- new info

Posted By: leon
I have been in conversations with the seller of the recent N167's on ebay. Come to find out they were his Dad's, who was a big time postcard collector/auctioneer, many years ago. These cards were thrown into the storage room as they weren't postcards. The more interesting part of the story is that there is a gentleman by the name of Walter Corson, who was a good friend of the Dad (owner of these cards), and Walter sold his collection to Frank Nagy in the early 60's. There are some large checklists that we might be able to get made public that could be very interesting. I am hoping the Dad will continue with the information flow. I love stuff like this....regards all (pulling for a 30)

Posted By: Hal Lewis
May very well get a 30 if it is graded by the same guy who did this one for me, since the cards are almost identical with one corner crease that goes through the paper:

Posted By: barrysloate
That was a good story and although cards like this had very little value in the era his dad was involved there still was some knowledge of which card sets were rare; and apparently his dad didn't seem to know this.

This card usually exhibits one or more of these characteristics: heavy print spots, heavy crease(s), pinhole(s), color or focus imperfections or discoloration, surface scuffing or tear, rounded and/or fraying corners, ink or pencil marking(s), and lack of all or some original gloss.

Posted By: Judge Dred (Fred)
From the SGC description is appears a 30 is absolutely possible. It depends on the person grading it (good day, bad day - one martini, two martinis - the alignment of the sun and moon).

Posted By: Colt McClelland
Has anyone ever seen an SGC 30 card with pin holes? I never read the description that carefully until I saw Leon's post above.

The card below is in an SGC 20 holder, but it lokks like an SGC 80 or higher other than the small pin hole. If there was ever a candidate for an SGC 30 with a pin hole, I would think this one is it (it also has a nice clean back):

Posted By: barrysloate
I agree with Colt- a card with a pinhole will never get a 30. I think Leon's is more like a 27.2, so when you round it off to the nearest number it becomes a 30. That is my prediction.

Posted By: Brian
"That is a nice looking card and deserves a 30. But the grade on a card like that really does not matter."

Agreed. People that can buy this type of card will make their own assessment to the visual appeal. I would not pay any more for a card like this in a 30 compared to a 20. Also, I would not pay any less for a card like this in a 20 compared to a 30.

Posted By: leon
I would have bid on the card regardless of it being a 20 or 30. The visual appeal is really what I think about when I bid...that, and the fact the seller is honest and gave a guarantee of authenticity made me feel comfortable. I should have the card tomorrow and will overnight it to SGC, my fave grading company, and should have an answer by Friday.....or maybe even Thursday as it's at the tier of an immediate (2 hour) grading....best regards

Posted By: barrysloate
Unless the rates have changed, SGC charges $100 plus postage for a walk-thru. And in nearly all cases it is worth every penny.

Posted By: leon
I think it was 3 days ago that PSA substantially raised their fees. I know it angered at least one, very well respected ebay dealer, quite a bit, as he called me to politely vent a little. At least it was subtantial to the dealer as it was about $3-$5 more for most cards he submits...times hundreds....please don't start a PSA bashing thread in this one....thanks

Posted By: Josh K.
"I agree with Colt- a card with a pinhole will never get a 30."

Not trying to hijack this thread (great card leon), but it just so happens that I had a card with a pinhole that was graded a 30. It was a sharp card absent the pinhole, but not quite as nice as colt's kelly. The big difference that I can recall is that the cardboard that had been "displaced" by the pin was pushed back into the hole on my card thereby improving its appearance dramatically. So, it is possible.

Posted By: leon
I don't really know what constitutes getting your name put on a holder. I guess I could ask but don't think it would add anything to the card(s). Mr.Nagy, or Mr.Burdick, or a few others might....but little 'ole moderator dude probably has little value . I do think SGC holders are the best looking for most of our vintage cards. I also feel SGC gives superior service. The Fedex (sorry Tom, but I did send it out UPS red) guy just dropped this off...I knew I would get my newest addition back today.....Hopefully the sellers dad will be forthcoming with the info I mentioned earlier. Here is a small excerpt that I cut and pasted concerning the sale to Mr.Nagy....written by Bill Mastro, and taken from the good folks at Beckett's, website...I hope they all don't mind as credit is given...and maybe, just maybe, I can help with some more info....

"In 1959, Nagy brokered one of the greatest deals in the history of our hobby, spending the entire life savings of his family to purchase the humongous collection of Walter Corson. Old Walt was terminally ill. The entire upstairs of his house was filled with all kind of cards, including those most coveted by Nagy —baseball cards! Corson had run a few ads in the archaic (by today's standards) trade papers of the hobby with an asking price of $10,000 for his entire assembly. Ten grand was a king's ransom back in 1959, and after a few months of ads there were still no takers. Nagy called Corson, then jumped in the old woody wagon and headed out to Pennsylvania in the hopes of making a deal face to face.

Three days and $6,000 later, Nagy had charmed the aging Corson into accepting his offer. He stuffed the car to capacity and shipped dozens of cases to his home in Detroit"

I guess this is one that slipped through the cracks...though we don't know for sure it would have come from that sale...yet ...

edited for grammar and to make amends with Tom

Posted By: Rob
Which were better condition than the 30 received on the Ewing. A reason why I won't send cards to SGC where they'd get a "2" from PSA. Seems like if you pay for a higher tier service, the grading improves as well.
