As with all card doctors, his client list would be very revealing.

It would be a fun list to see. Most would not care and would just keep buying from those on the list anyway.

Personally I like the idea of repairing the cards as long as it is fully disclosed. It's being done now without disclosure.

Ben, probably true, the slab trumps the card for many or most it seems.

Way back in 1990, when I was still stupid and naïve, I sent my raw T206 Ty Cobb (bat on shoulder) to a company in California (not the one mentioned) that had advertised in SCD that they could 'restore' vintage cards.

I waited, waited, and waited.

Finally, I was fed up at the delay (several months) I called and said, 'Please just send the card back now'.

They did, and while nothing appeared to be changed (not trimmed, etc.) they did charge me $57 to get it back...which I later came to accept as a ransom payment.

Leon if you have a chance, Dennis Purdy's article on PSA is very interesting as well.

Was that the one that called grading companies "smoke detectors without batteries"? VCBC had some good quotes at times.

I don't know for certain why issue #7 of VCBC is so difficult to find, but the story I've heard is that PSA wasn't pleased with the article and bought up the entire remaining stock. Even though I was assistant editor of the magazine, I didn't know everything that was going on.

The pre-internet equivalent of "poofing" a thread?

Another post

There's another post somewhere with an article that has an interview of a lady who's a restoration expert for one of the auction houses. At least that's how I remember it. She restores items other than cards for the auction house (at least we hope so).
In this article she talks about restoring a 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig, and brags that she was able to get it graded.
Once again, very interesting reading, to say the least.

What all this I hear about getting an altered card past a third party grader? How could that happen?? And wouldn't their guarantee cover it if it did???

Nowadays TPG's only guarantee their opinions, right or wrong. It is guaranteed to be their opinion though. What a farce.

Terrific look back at VCBC! As someone who coordinated multiple art 19th century portrait restorations for a historic church, I'd rather see a good-looking card than a good-looking holder. Our hobby contains many sacred cows and I'd rather that beef be beauty over scarcity.
