help dating an old bat (Town Ball)

Hello. Picked this up at an estate auction. Farmhouse that was built in mid 1700's. Do you think it might be a town ball bat. It is just over 32 in long and is very heavy it weighs 34 oz. It's in pretty good condition except 2 knots are opening up. there are no markings. Could anyone help with age and value. Thanks dave

I doubt it could be classified as a Town Ball Bat, as it is longer and heavier than typical examples. Plus, the knob and overall shape of the bat are different. A classic Town Ball Bat typically has two flattened sides to the barrel, and is under 30" long. Plus, the knob is typically more roundeded (bulbous).

Yours however, is a magfnificent early handmade lathe Bat. A very desirable example with nice wood, a unique tapered handle and a great overall shape. I'm guessing this one dates to the 1870s or so, and is a wonderful early example. I am sure others will chime in here as well.

Thanks for posting...
