P2 pin rarity?

I have a P2 Reulbach with paper on the back that says WHITEHEAD AND HOAG CO. Is this a rarity? All the other ones I have are either Factory 25 or Factory 42. Thanks.

No. Somebody changed the paper. It should be Sweet Caporal I believe.

Leon, That is what I thought as all my others are Sweet Caporal either Factory 25 or 42. This one says:

"The Whitehead&Hoag Co.
Newark, N.J.
Then the Union stamp
"Allied PrintingTrades Union Council " 3 outside the label
Label
"Newark, N.J."
"patented
July 17 1894

April 14, 1896 July 21, 1896"

Given the Sweet Caporal are 1910-12, I was wondering if maybe this was a promotion of some sort by Whitehead & Hoag. Guess I will have to do some more research on this company.

Thanks.

Jim

If possible, post a couple of pics.

I have attached scans but the back is very fuzzy and can't seem to get it any better. I have also just done some research on Whitehead and Hoag and found, among other things, they made political buttons for the 1910 campaign. I wonder if they took a Sweet Caporal pin, added their logo on the back, just to show people they could do it???

I took a picture of the back and it came out better.

Whitehead was a major producer of pins of all types. Being down the street in Newark...home of the NJ Devils. At flea markets I have come accross many of their pins. But this one I am 99% sure not their pin. Someone replaced back.

i agree with you which is why I said I wonder if it was a type of piece they made maybe as a sample before they made the Sweet Caporal pins they did make.

some have a different color, I have few on eBay right now - but never seen them with any other company

This is the only one I have ever seen also which is why I think it was a made up sample for some reason.

correct, it must have been added - I was saying the Sweet Caporal paper has a few different colors

still very different and your pin looks like original paper

cubman1941 02-03-2018 12:53 PM

Thanks. I thought it is original paper also which, again, is why I thought it was a sample for some purpose.

Appreciate your response.

I have seen others that had their paper removed and another put in. They weren't samples. I doubt very seriously yours is a sample either. It was done recently but I doubt there is a definitive way to be sure. Just my opinion.....

Leon,

Thanks. You are probably right but can't figure out why. I have had this one for years and have no idea where i got it. I know I got it for the Reulbach pin and not the back because I just started paying attention to the backs the last few months when I got around to separating the Fact 25 and Fact 42.

Appreciate it.
