It could be an early sig. Threre are a couple of tells that occur in later sigs too but also some that are very different. With that said, I avoid anything these days if my conclusion is it "could be". I know it's a hard one to find, but tread carefully. Good luck.

Joe Jenkins Info Card

1 Attachment(s)
Bought a lot of 1919 Sox Heilbroner Info Cards which included a signed Dick Kerr but really was after this one. I feel ths "This is correct" is in Jenkins hand, but the pencil "Joseph" probably isnt. Anyone out there have a Joe jenkins autograph? This is the closest I have come

The Reds is the cover of the Roto section in the Chicago Sunday Tribune on Sept 21, 1919.

The Sox is a blank backed supplement to the same paper dated a week earlier (Sept 14, 1919).

Both are about 12 X 17.5 inches.

Got excited when I saw this. It doesn't really fit in my collection so I may end up moving it when something comes along that is more of a fit, but I think it is super cool.

One of the most fascinating people around. Some of the details on the back.

Thanks! I saw it and thought it was super cool. Love that he signed his name and included details on the back (like playing under the name "Arnold" etc. Some things I would have thought he might have kept quiet.

1919 Team Picture

1 Attachment(s)
Picked up this circa 1940s-50s print of what is labeled the 1920 White Sox, but is the 1919 Sox. The presence of what appears to be Dave Danforth (3rd from left) and Frank Shellenback (6th from left) would date this picture to the 1919 season. While not labeled here is my identification:

L-R
Kid Gleason, Lefty Williams, Dave Danforth, Eddie Collins, Joe Jenkins, Frank Shellenback, Dickie Kerr, Grover Lowdermilk, Ray Schalk, Eddie Cicotte, Reb Russell, Happy Felsch, Shano Collins, ?Chick Gandil?, Eddie Murphy, Fred McMullin, Swede Risberg, Joe Jackson, Hervey McClellan, Nemo Leibold, Buck Weaver, Byrd Lynn

Love that photo. The semii-formal poses are great. The background, with the arches of Comiskey Park, sets it up terrifically.

Pro model bat

1 Attachment(s)
Aside from a few Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins, and Ray Schalk bats, there are not all that many Black Sox bats in the hobby. So, I offer this Reb Russell bat as a Black Sox piece. Reb's model seems to have been popular with other players: I believe that even after he retired other players would order his model, with his signature, for their own use. But this one is said to match his orders from H&B. True, Reb didn't contribute much to the Sox in 1919. He pitched to a couple of batters with poor results. But he did play for them in 1919!

1917 Collins-McCarthy's

1 Attachment(s)
I was too slow to land the Felsch and not interested in the "Lefty Williams" with the wrong picture (Hugh High). Great looking cards with the Collins-McCarthy Baseball's Hall of Fame backs. Was told they were cut from a sheet which is why the A grades (my picture does not do them justice)

Risberg Checklist Completed

1 Attachment(s)
Would like to see some folks' recent pickups...

I'm going to make a couple of posts in here this week after a few big pickups for me thanks to a net54 member

Picked up my last Risberg card, 1916 Zeenut, to complete his 3 card checklist (I dont count the 1917-18 Team set as only one set is known to exist)

It's not perfect obviously, a scrapbook removal with some staining and writing with trimmed down edges, but the image is great!

...Now ISO 1915 Zeenuts of Williams and Burns, and a nice low-mid level 1915 Cicotte Cracker Jack...and a W514 Jackson of course...

mr2686 03-15-2021 01:47 PM

Nice pickup Thomas, and good luck finding a nice 1915 Cicotte CJ. I got mine about 30 years ago but misplaced it for many years when we moved. Fortunately found it 3 years ago in an old briefcase along with some forgotten autographs.

Same damn thing happened to me! I had a nice raw one...probably about a 5 grade I bought about 20+ years ago... kept it in one of those thick screw down holders and it disappeared. Unfortunately I have never found it and have decided it must have been stolen by a college roommate

This month picked up a Felsch signature and the 1916 Risberg, last month I added the 1917 Collins-McCarthy Felsch.

Plus the last 2 months picked up signed photos of the White Sox clubhouse attendants the Colledge brothers and a signed AP of mascot/batboy Eddie Bennett.

Do those bats ever come up for auction?

mr2686 04-04-2021 08:52 AM

Thomas, you've had one heck of a good year so far on the Black Sox collection. Can't wait to see what's next.

Kevin 04-04-2021 07:22 PM

Thomas - I am sort of a Joe Jenkins fan. Very long story. Does his memorabilia come up at all? I wouldn’t even know where to look.

Great stuff, by the way!

I have never seen a signature of his for sale outside one being in the Jack Smalling collection...I think Kevin Keating had one once upon a time maybe as well. That info card with his hand written note is closest I have ever come. He has baseball cards (zeenuts) and type 1 photos that come up for auction every so often.

I get the impression he would have been a fun guy to hang around, I read an interview he gave later in life where he basically said he was very happy being the 3rd string catcher. He also wrote letters to Comiskey from over seas while he served in WW1 that were printed in the papers that are a fun read.

August 1910 Receipt

One of my favorite collecting niches, 1919 Black Sox. There`s always great items being added to this thread, the latest continuing that trend. Always on the lookout for "affordable" B Sox related pieces and this one fit the bill. Not sure if it was here or read somewhere else but, supposedly soon after Chick Gandil was acquired by the White Sox he had these clothing items charged to Charles Comisky. Of course Comisky had never heard of the arrangement and kept this in his scrapbook to apparently recoup payment from Chick. Now that must have been an interesting conversation.

That's a very cool piece!

Was part of Comiskey's scrapbook and there was a letter accompanying the bill that sold at auction not to long ago. I dont own it but did grab pictures of it.

His brother - William - made it big in Mexico. Some crazy backstory, too. As for my fascination with Joe:

Mid to late 80s, my friend Billy and I were trying to round out the 1919 White Sox on Micro League Baseball. We had to field 25 players and spent an afternoon pouring over the baseball encyclopedia for any player that had at bats for the team. We stumbled upon Joe Jenkins. I believe his birthday was in October and my buddy, Billy, was born in October. He passed away in late June. School let out in late June. Joe Jenkins became a hero for us.

To see if someone was telling the truth, we’d say: “Swear on Joe Jenkins!” and the other, if they were being completely honest, would reply “I swear on Joe Jenkins”. There was a penalty if that oath was ever broken.

I still see Billy from time to time and Joe’s name still gets bandied about.

The little I’ve read on him does indeed make him seem like an interesting character. I got to check out those baseball cards...

Kevin 04-09-2021 06:40 PM

I dont know if we are suppose to post cards in this topic/thread or not...Im just realizing that...but I picked up a 1912 Zeenut Home Run Kisses Win Noyes which completes his 4 card checklist for me (I think)
1911 Zeenut, 1912 Zeenut, 1912 Home Run Kisses, 1916 Zeenut

From RMY's latest auction...I lost out on two great McMullin photos in the last year or so and even though this one is kind of small I will take it...great image

My keepers from a Hunt vintage photo lot

Stamped Feb 1919 action photo of 3rd string catcher Joe Jenkins, though this photo had to have been taken sometime in 1917

Stamped Sept 1919 photo of Kid Gleason on the road...looks like Fred McMullin in the background leaning on a bat but not 100% sure

Thxs. It was the reason I bid (so high!) on the lot. Been wondering if it would be worth sending to an expert that can touch up the newspaper marks?

Great Post and Love all the Black Sox Pickups in this thread. (although I focus more on Joe Jackson then the rest)
