T206 Poll, Love em or hate em

Posted By: Dave
I'm wondering with the T206 set being considered "THE" set of all vintage card sets, what everyone's opinions are.....

1.LOVE EM- I can't get enough and have to grab up as many as possible or at least as far as the money take them.

2.LIKE EM- They are a nice set, I collect quite a few here and there, but they don't run through my dreams at night

3.They are OK- I might collect the HOF'er now and then or rare back, but other than that not too interested.

4.HATE EM- This set has never done much for me, and I don't care if there is ever another T206 thread or not.

5.Been there done that- And not interested in this set anymore

My own vote is love em......I've certainly got hooked. The history behind the cards, the massive number of cards in the set, the back variations....all add to the enjoyment for me...Dave

Posted By: Mike
3 - I used to collect some of them. And still have some. But no longer. I really don't know why, or understand why. But they just don't do that much for me. I certainly can appreciate them, but (I know this is blasphemy in here) I am tired of them, and quite frankly think they are over rated. I saw one of the Honus Wagners yesterday, in a museum display, and it was neat, and it was beautiful, but it didn't make me want to handstands or anything. Though I must admit, it was fun to see one in person. Sorry, but they kind of bore me.

Posted By: Ray
#3 - pretty much what Mike said.

But I'll never forget the feeling of getting my first one. It was like a right of passage (even though it was a lowly PSA 1 common).

There's too many other beautiful sets out there to jump on that bandwagon. Plus, I like collecting sets I know I at least have a chance of completing before I die.

Posted By: Joe Tocco
Even though I don't collect baseball, I love the T206 set. It has everything going for it: simple classic design, incredible lithography, amazing player selection, affordable and available, but with tough variations and short prints that can make it a life's work. Is there any other set with so many different ways to collect? Back variations, portraits, HOFers, Southern Leagers, you name it. Is there any other set that is such an ambassador for the hobby? Where else can you find a $20 common and a $2 million HOF ultra-rarity in the same set? And where else will the owners of the $20 common and the $2 million HOF ultra-rarity both be so happy and proud of their card?

Posted By: Aaron Cowan
Between 2 and 3...I actually like all T-cards and that what I focus on. I guess T-cards in general are "in my dreams." I'm continually pleased with how obtainable these 100 year old cards are. It makes me feel like I'm owning a bit of history rather than the lastest pretty card manufactured from shards of jersey and bat.

Aaron Cowan
acowan19@gmail.com

Posted By: Mike
Message to JP....The ones that I have, I want to keep. I'm not saying I hate them, there are just many other issues that interest me. I have a smattering of issues, such as 204's etc. I much prefer them over 206's. And for some unknown reason, I like the 207's, over the 206's. Go figure. I love the George C. Millers, the delongs, U S caramels etc etc. To each their own. I've never claimed to be rational. My wife will attest to that. I recently picked up an Uncat. Foxx from leon. Now that turned me on....

Posted By: John Kalafarski
That a lot of people love them and stay away from what I like. They don't sing aesthetically for me: Cracker Jacks and Caramels are much more attractive from that era; and high end Goudeys kill them. Heck, I even dig '49 Bowmans better. Peace.

Posted By: DJ

1 1/2.

The 1/2 because while it cost me $8-10 some eight years ago for a VG-VG+ common, I'm now paying five to six times that. The cards have wonderful poses, affordable depending how you want to tackle this, are quite the challenge to complete a master and a bunch of ways to collect the set and almost 100 years old.

DJ
