REA Spring Auction Preview: Ty Cobb Broad Leaf 460 Edition

3 Attachment(s)
Hi Everyone,

Leading up to each auction, we get inundated with calls and emails from collectors clamoring to know what's going to be in our auction. They know we turn up great stuff on a consistent basis, and the excitement that surrounds an REA auction and the anticipation for our catalog reaches fever pitch about two weeks out. That's where we're at now, with bidding opening April 13, but I have to say that we've been getting a lot of specific questions in the last week or so from people wanting to know if we had a Broad Leaf 460 Ty Cobb card. For many years, the answer would have likely been "we wish" or "are you kidding me?" This year, however, we're excited to announce that we do indeed have an example of this rare card.

Many of you will be familiar with the card from its appearance on eBay and its discussion on the board. Even I can admit that it was a bit unorthodox from the start, but be that as it may, it does not change the fact that card is entirely real! We are happy to be able to offer the card authenticated and encapsulated by SGC, only the second confirmed and graded example. We do this day in and day out, and we've heard every story and seen items come from some of the strangest places. We are natural skeptics ourselves. But we have to cast all the noise aside and evaluate the items on their own merits, and when we had a chance to properly inspect this card, it was absolutely everything that you'd expect it to be.

The card will be lot #6 in the auction that opens two weeks from tomorrow. It will have a starting bid of $2500 and we expect it to sell for many multiples of that. We're excited to let the card run its course, properly authenticated and offered in a reliable venue. It should be fun to watch!

http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/...f-460-ty-cobb/

The card will be on display at our booth next weekend (April 6-8) at the Chantilly, VA show. It will also be available for inspection in person by appointment at our office for the duration of the auction (April 13-May 6).

Catalogs will mail starting April 13. If you're not on our mailing list and you'd like to be, you can request one on our website.

We're excited to show off the other 2650+ lots in this auction!

Brian

Incredible...

It's so fresh, not even SGC has it on their website pop reports!

Count me in as one of the guys who got it wrong. Best of luck to the consignor!

edjs 03-29-2018 10:27 AM

There it is, nice!

hshrimps 03-29-2018 10:29 AM

Cool... SGC-10. If it hits over $100k, i rather have a Ty Cobb back.

hshrimps 03-29-2018 10:31 AM

Sadly... REA won't have a T206 Wagner in their auction this yr... again. :(

edjs 03-29-2018 10:38 AM

The logistics of getting that done in time to make your catalogue must of been insane, bravo!

What does SGC know? There were several Net 54 "experts" who repeatedly told us the card is fake. Gosh it is just so hard to decide who to believe.:p

hshrimps 03-29-2018 11:15 AM

If it is graded, it "must" be good.

He should put it on eBay with a ridiculous BIN price and watch as it sits there month after month, year after year, with no one taking a bite.

Man, I've never used the words "sad" and "REA" in the same sentence. Can't please everyone I guess.

You are the one other person who has a rooting interest in how much this card goes for. :)

Blunder19 03-29-2018 01:26 PM

Very true :)

autograf 03-29-2018 01:39 PM

I'm sure a phenomenal job with the REA auction again Brian.

mullinsm 03-29-2018 03:18 PM

Well well well

I'm glad to see it authenticated and eager to watch the bidding.

Jason 03-29-2018 08:58 PM

Thats pretty cool I saw Leons teaser about a possible announcement in a previous thread. I figured it was authentic at that point. It couldnt have went to a better AH. Im looking forward to stopping by and seeing the card at Chantilly and the auction in general.

I won the "other" BL460 Cobb at a Clean Sweep Auction in the mid 2000s for around 5k. It has been a long time since this combo has been auctioned though.

MVSNYC 03-30-2018 04:51 AM

The “other” being Jamie’s? So there’s two that exist?

vintagerookies51 03-30-2018 08:40 AM

Can’t remember the story the original eBay listing had, but WOW can’t believe it turned out to be real. Someone almost had a steal on eBay

wayne97 03-30-2018 04:07 PM

lets see what REA has and how the bidding will go on this card

Well, its good Friday, With all the hype from this card, Why doesn't REA make it an extra good Friday and open up the auction

DerekMichael 03-30-2018 07:32 PM

Cobb Broad Leaf 460 ... Cobb Lenox ... Cobb Uzit ... the quality in the combinations available is just stunning. What a truly spectacular offering by Robert Edward Auctions.

Makes me giddy :D

Sean 03-31-2018 01:55 PM

When will the preview be online?

Edwolf1963 03-31-2018 03:10 PM

Great selection. Any special T206's?

Aquarian Sports Cards 04-01-2018 05:42 PM

I believe there's an Esskay Meats set still on boxes which is mind-blowing

Wrong guy.

Hey Larry, what about a Jehosie Heard?

Also any special Briggs, Hunters, Esskay, or Wilson Franks companion pieces?

Sorry you are getting out, but looking forward to the catalog!

All the best,

Dan

Somehow I'm guessing SGC may have dropped everything and literally ran to get the card. Doubt any begging was involved.

(If REA can get PSA to act on the rather unimportant single ticket stub I sent them in mid January. . . .now that would be an accomplishment.)

It was a beautiful issue--snagged 15 minutes or so with it.

Incredible T206s, and three that I really am going to like!!

Where? Please tell me where. I need my fix, man. I would literally venture into a back alley on the West Side to get a bootleg copy of the catalog.

ruth-gehrig 04-06-2018 07:59 PM

In the blink of an eye that the link was up I clicked on it and never closed out of the window. I can still navigate through it.

ruth-gehrig 04-07-2018 11:48 AM

I don't believe the file can be downloaded or forwarded. Makes me wonder what I could get for my phone over on the bst :D ;)
