I have some early Detroit Tiger scorecards and I would like to find out the date the game was played. For example I have one 1913 Detroit scorecard vs New York. Detroit played the NY team at home on May 7,8,9,10, July 20,21,22,23 and Aug 21, 22, 23. One of the clues is that Guy Tutwiler is in the starting lineup for Detroit at 1st base. He normally did not start. He only played 14 games for Detroit in 1913. Or, maybe there is something on the scorecard that indicates the date, anyone know?<br /><br />Thanks joe<br><br>Ty Cobb, Spikes flying!

Posted By: <b>Dan Bretta</b><p>Often the only way to determine the date of a scorecard is if it is scored - even partially. There may have been running changes throughout the year in the advertisements, but you'd have to find a hardcore collector to go by that indicator.

Go to the boxscores...'tis quite tedious when Project Scoresheet or another such <br />aggregator hasn't done the work--1913 not available yet, as far as I can tell.<br /><br />So off to the Sporting News...go to paperofrecord.com. Register for your<br />FREE account and you can search well over one hundred years of TSN issues.<br /><br /><br />As I said, this is unbelievably tedious research and YOU MAY GO BLIND before you find your answer, but, hey, there's worse things that make you blind.<br /><br />Good luck.

Posted By: <b>bobw</b><p>After a quick search on probaseballarchive, I would guess that your program is from August because Tutweiler was playing in Ft Wayne most of the year and was brought up to the Tigers in early August.<br /><br />From the Ft Wayne Gazette August 22,1913:<br /><br />TUT ENABLES GAINOR TO TAKE NEEDED LAYOFF. <br /><br />Critics following the play of the Detroit club declare that First Baseman<br />Gainor must be benched about once every four weeks for a period of ten days<br />or so if he is to be of any value to the Detroit club. The old injury which came<br />close to ruining Del as a ball player is still there and after a month's steady<br />play the big West Virginian will begin to go to the bad chiefly because his bad<br />arm appears to weaken. Give him a short layoff and he will again be as strong<br />as ever.<br />From all appearances, the presence of Guy Tutweiler, the Fort Wayne<br />recruit who has gone to the Tigers, is going to enable Gainor to take that rest<br />as Tut is now on first and Del is playing the bench for the present. Jennings<br />has always figured Tutweiler as a first baseman and for that reason it is not at<br />all surprising to see the larruping southerner on the initial corner for the<br />Detroit club, especially when stacked up against right-handers.And it is a<br />lucky thing for Guy that he has at times appeared on the infield as there is<br />little chance of his breaking into the Detroit outfield with such men as Cobb<br />Crawford and Veach at present performing in the outer works for the Tigers.

That site provides boxscores for virtually every game played in the last hundred years. But your scorecard would have to be scored for you to find the date of the game.

Barry, this scorecard is not scored, so the other site won't work for this scorecard.
