Just bought a box. Hoping to pull the squirrel auto with hair strand relic.

Leon 01-30-2012 08:14 PM

expensive squirrel

That is an expensive squirrel. As an animal lover I kind of like that card!!

novakjr 01-30-2012 08:18 PM

Thanks for letting this fly over here Leon. I know I posted it earlier in the Sports Talk section. I ultimately changed my mind, and thought it would be interesting over here as well..

The prices just seem nuts to me...Hell, how much does the 2007 Poley Walnuts card sell for nowadays? Although I will agree Leon, there's just something about the squirrels that makes me want these. But not at these prices..

z28jd 01-30-2012 08:26 PM

This board had a long thread about the Jeter/Bush/Mantle card and we watched the prices go crazy. I have no doubts this card will do the same then crash to Earth and people will be stuck with a card they paid about 100x too much for. People back then were actually saying about the Jeter card, they were going to put it away for their young kids college fund....hope the kids learns how to ride a unicycle because he will need it at the college he's going to

packs 01-30-2012 08:30 PM

The articles I'm reading say the product isn't launched until Wednesday. Are these people selling the card without actually having it yet?

It's possible, the one person has 60 cases so they must feel confident about getting a few

novakjr 01-30-2012 08:35 PM

packs. I'm not sure, but I'd assume the dealers, or perhaps people working at Target or Walmart have been busting these already based on the 79 pages of 2012 Topps stuff on ebay.. Wednesday's probably the general public release. But if you've ever know somebody who worked for a Walmart of Best-Buy, they can usually get you a new dvd a few days before release. I'd guess that the cards are a somewhat similar situation.

Jantz 01-30-2012 09:35 PM

That squirrel would go well with some farva beans and a fine bottle of Chianti.

Packs - I don't think all of those sellers actually own the card yet. The last link David posted looks like the seller took a picture of their computer screen. By the way, thats the same image Yahoo used for their story.

novakjr 01-31-2012 07:44 AM

How in the hell is this card alone, sometimes topping the prices of full cases? As illogical as this whole mess is, paying more for the card, than you would a case, just seems flat out nuts...

z28jd 01-31-2012 08:13 AM

People see short-printed in the stories and assume the card is going to be extremely rare and since it is fresh in their mind they go to ebay, see the prices and say I have to get mine before they all sell out, not thinking there will be thousands of these cards around and there won't be hundreds of people willing to pay big bucks for a picture of a squirrel years or even months from now.

It is like what happens when a famous player dies, the prices of his autographs will go crazy that day and for the next week, people say that he obviously won't be signing anymore so I have to get mine now before they're all gone but the day before he died they had no intentions of getting his autograph. If they waited about two months instead, the price would be back down to pre-death levels and the autograph is still just as rare, possibly even more rare since a few could've been lost to attrition(lost in mail, fire, flood, etc)

This card will be a $5 card in no time, the gotta have it crowd will get theirs at any price and then the collectors will wait and eventually get one for a reasonable price

HOF Auto Rookies 02-01-2012 11:01 AM

Just like the 2007 topps jeter/bush/mantle variation, this card will be at $10 in a few months

novakjr 02-01-2012 11:07 AM

Well, at least the BINs have come down to the $200-250 range. Still ridiculous. But not as ridiculous as the jackass that just had to have it for $611.99. Haha. Not even two days and the price is already 33% less than what this clown paid... He's gotta be scratching his head right now..

I suppose it's possible that he's a millionaire Cardinals fan who just doesn't care, but yeah, if that was a "normal" collector...well, you could have had, say, a presentable low grade T206 Cobb (or any number of other awesome cards) for that...

What else are you going to display next to a gem-mint Ozzie Smith rookie?

You guys laugh, but anyone who will pay this much for a squirrel card must be able to afford to because he was such a brilliant genius that he acquired enough wealth to be able to blow it this way. Seriously, think about it. (then forget it).

So Beckett sells cards that they grade?

They've never been shy about their conflict of interest.

No, not necessarily, beckett does consignments...could have just sent it in, got that grade, then contacted beckett to consign the card...

Leon 02-02-2012 03:24 PM

as far as I know

As far as I know Beckett does not own any cards they sell. They take them on consignment and sell them. They have also consigned some of their consignments to auction houses when it makes sense for their consignors. They have never consigned to the one I help run/own. regards

While that makes sense. There's definitely a conflict of interest. If a submitter has shown a history of consigning in this manner, I imagine that he's likely to get a more favorable grade.

JasonD08 02-02-2012 04:49 PM

Selling a card that they graded is a conflict of interest...I don't care if they own it or not, they have an interest in this item selling for as much as possible.

TexasLeaguer 02-02-2012 05:59 PM

At least with Beckett you can be sure that the card in the slab is actually the card that they graded. I have no doubt that many of the overgraded/fake cards that people post from PSA and SGC have been inserted into compromised slabs after the fact. Beckett slabs are huge, ungainly, hard to scan etc... but at least they are secure and actually protect the card. PSA slabs in particular are far from secure and often allow the card to "float" inside the slab. It's also been shown that the "frosting" from a cracked case can be buffed out and cleaned up with chemicals, so it's hard to spot those fakes in real slabs. I don't like the apparent conflict of interest, but I feel that sometimes Beckett doesn't get credit for the things they do better than the others.

z28jd 02-03-2012 07:11 AM

The sad thing now for some people who bid like crazy when there were only 8-10 of these cards on ebay, is that they have a running auction still with bids over $200 while they watch this card end for less than half that amount. Most of the early listings were just 1-3 day listings but some people put them up for 5-7 days and they haven't had a bid in two days.

There have been over 100 of these cards on ebay already and the set came out Wed. so you do the math. Prices went just below $100 last night three times and then very early this morning one sold for $90 with free shipping.

Another funny auction is a guy with a $549 or B/O listing has turned down six offers on his card....what is he thinking? The only way this card doesn't keep plummeting in price is if sportscenter or some other news show mentions it, then it will shoot back up for a day or so

t206hound 02-03-2012 01:06 PM

I think I picked up a short print variation

Topps is so unoriginal... they've copied the styles of T206s and A&G and more. Now they've really done it with this supposedly original squirrel short print. Check out my T206 Wid Conroy Fielding Squirrel Short Print Variation...

Game-used Squirrel Fur? That reminds me of a friend of mine who was kind of a player - nasty habits, though.

After game used "Beaver" fur card featuring a Steve Garvey "Player" card?

Erick, love that card, slab it and I'll take it!!!!!

Ken, My favorite movie line of all time." Nice beaver, Thank You, I just had it stuffed."

Ross, I read an article some time ago, A collector had his entire collection get caught in a flood ( may have been Hurricane Katrina ) and the only cards not water logged were the Beckett slabs, another plus I guess for them.

kmac32 02-04-2012 05:32 PM

Ralph, that was a scream. LOL

2dueces 02-04-2012 05:42 PM

Didnt we have a thread about squirrels on here about 5 or 6 years ago? :)

GoldenAge50s 02-04-2012 08:34 PM

The only squirrel I'd pay $300 or more for won't be found on a baseball card.
