A Trivia Question

Without peeking at the record books!!!!!.....During the 20th century, there were five different pitchers that each won 35 or more games during a season...how many can you name without cheating?

Rich Klein 12-12-2009 08:41 AM

I got 4 answers before checking

Chesbro and Walsh for sure

Possibly Mathewson and McGinnity

I did look this up and my 5th guess was wrong (GC Alexander)

Regards
Rich

Walter Johnson was 36-7, I believe in 1913.

And Matty won 37. (and I didn't look them up).

rfurnish 12-12-2009 08:55 AM

1904 Jack Chesbro 41-12
1908 Ed Walsh 40-15
1908 Christy Mathewson 37-11
1913 Walter Johnson 36-7
1904 Joe McGinnity 35-8

Good job, fellas! My next question will have to be super obscure.

Let's start a new one: name all the players who got 7 or more hits in a major league game. I can name five, but there may be more.

I know 7 is the record for a nine inning game, set by Wilbert Robertson and tied by Rennie Stennet, and the extra inning record is 9 held by Johnny Burnett.

barrysloate 12-12-2009 09:37 AM

That's three. The other two I know were done in a 10 inning game, and a 22 inning game (there's a hint).

Name a post deadball era pitcher who lost 24 games one year and 22 the next.

barrysloate 12-12-2009 10:11 AM

Peter- they haven't finished answering mine yet. But I can give the answers.

The other two are Cesar Guitierrez(sp) and Rocky Colavito.

barrysloate 12-12-2009 10:12 AM

Peter- could it be someone who pitched for the Mets in 1962 and 1963?

Peter_Spaeth 12-12-2009 10:13 AM

Oh sorry Barry I thought it was answered.

Peter_Spaeth 12-12-2009 10:14 AM

Mets is right.

barrysloate 12-12-2009 10:15 AM

Maybe Carlton Willey, or one of those other guys.

If Willey is wrong, maybe Alvin Jackson?

baseballart 12-12-2009 10:24 AM

Roger Craig?

barrysloate 12-12-2009 10:25 AM

I think Max got it. I'll say Craig also.

Peter_Spaeth 12-12-2009 10:27 AM

Yep. Jackson had the distinction of two separate season of 8-20.
