Posting pics in the "recent pickup" threads- size?

Posted By: leon
Hey folks,
A little board upkeep here. Should it be a requirement for folks to scan at only 1x the size in these threads, unless the item is extremely small (normal cards at 1x)? Should I enforce it? Personally I don't even look after about 20 posts because it takes all friggin' day to download.....your thoughts...

Posted By: Joe Jones
I agree with the rule. I will admit that I have violated the rule before but have recently learned how to make scans smaller. It takes forever for the page to load, especially when a slow computer is involved like my 1990's dinosaur.

Posted By: BlackSoxFan
HELL YEAH! Enforce away! Except it's not the display size of the image that makes the difference..... i think you should cap the file size to somewhere between 80 and 100k! and the display size to no widder than 600px.

For Example:

That pic is 600x485 and 58 kb!

That pic is 500x402 and 57 kb!

in otherwords, display size doesn't matteter. It only afects left to right scrolling not how long it takes an image to load.

Regards,

Black Sox Fan

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

email me

Posted By: Anonymous
1x or 2x may not mean anything depending on how you have your display monitor set. I run 800x600 so you're 1x is my 1.5x.....

Ted's idea re: file size will be much more meaningful
........perhaps a lesson on dpi settings for scanners is in order on the FAQ's

Posted By: jay behrens
unless you are going to print out what you are scanning, there is no reason to set your scanner higher than 100dpi. 72dpi is the norm for web pics. The higher the dpi, the larger the picture is going to be.

Jay

I've just reached Upper Lower Class. I am now officially a babe magnet for poor chicks.

Posted By: leon
My scanner/software doesn't have resolution settings. It has a percentage of the item being scanned...be it 50%,75%,100%,150%, or 200%.....so for all you dpi guys I don't give a rats ass about anything except make your darn scans smaller...if you preview and the scanned pic takes up your whole screen then it's too big. That's about as techy as I get or care to get....ask Brian M.....he'll tell ya I don't know what the heck I am doing either....regards all

Posted By: davidcycleback
Beyond scanning size, many to most computers have picture/graphics programs that can resize the picture and change it's kb size. On mine, you can type in the percentage of size you want (50% of original size, 72%, other) and do the same for pixel size. Mine either came with my computer or I downloaded it for free from download.com

This does look to be unanimous though and everyone wants folks to be careful when posting pics... and not to post huge ones....regards

Posted By: jay behrens
The big culprit of left-right scrolling is the posting of eBay links. Most of those links can just shortened so that just the item number is the last thing in the link. All those Qs ?s and other junk aren't really needed for a valid link.

Jay

I've just reached Upper Lower Class. I am now officially a babe magnet for poor chicks.

Posted By: BlackSoxFan
Leon - I ran a post about how to properly scan not too long ago...look through that, it might be good use for the FAQs. At the end of the day though, i think people need to take some initiative and learn for themselves. I'm happy to help people as much as possible, but if you are able to find this forum and post to it, you should be able to research how to properly scan. Most programs come with help files and the such. People don't like to read...but it helps. I'm not trying to be sarcastic, but that will help.

Regards,

Black Sox Fan

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

email me
