Topps and Woolworth
 

Between 1985 and 1991 Topps in conjunction with Woolworths produced a series of boxed baseball sets. Not worth much but interesting collectible. They also did it with K Mart.

I remember going around to the various discount stores and Topps made so much of that stuff the stores would clearance it out after the season for a vastly reduced price.

I'd buy a few dozen sets, laughing at the moron's who were passing on the gold mine and how I'd be retiring at age 30 off my incredible profit potential.....

It never dawned on me that if every discount store had 100 extra sets of cards, maybe they weren't rare at all.......

So somewhere I've got a couple boxes full of those various boxed sets.

But they are cool sets.......

Yeah, I remember that too David. I remember K-Mart blowing those out for 99 cents after the season and they had hundreds of them. I picked up a couple of extras, but I had no illusion that they were going to be part of my retirement!:D

remember buying these sets just to get mets players for my collection and giving the rest away.

I still have the case of 1982 K-Mart that my Mom bought for me at 10 cents per set.

I have a baseball highlights box, but never knew they were mfg. by topps Ireland from the Republic of Ireland

I have fond memories of the 1982 Kmart set because my dad brought me one home just out of the blue. I still have that very set in the same album pages.

Unrelated to Dad..... I have a complete Kmart set that is blanked back (minus a Thurman Munson). If anyone has one I would be interested.

I like how some of them proclaim "Limited Edition", meaning they weren't going to produce them forever.

I also have the same memories of the 1982 Kmart set. Seems like every trip we make to the 'Mart that summer, the stack of boxes would be a little bit smaller and the price cut in half. I think the last ones we picked up were $0.12 per set. And that was after buying a bunch at $0.25. Seems like the biggest market today is from the autograph forgers who use them as a cheap medium to peddle their worthless garbage.

That K Mart set was formative for me. I was seven and my mom got it for me... it was the first time I had laid eyes on many of the older Topps designs and introduced me to a slew of players I had never heard of...Maury Wills, Thurman Munson, Ken Boyer, and of course Zoilo Versailles...

Nothing but respect for all of those boxed sets!

The Woolworth sets from 1987 - 1991 were a nice supplement to the Topps set as they included included playoff and World Series cards which were unfortunately missing from the Topps set during those years.

I bought a ton of 1986 donruss highlights sets. I mean it has Canseco, Clark, Bo etc! Gonna be worth a mint!!! (Still waiting)

My parents had a store in a strip center with an old Woolworths. I was in there regularly. They apparently did not have great inventory control as sometimes I would find unopened packs and boxes from years earlier - nothing crazy - but definitely some 70's stuff worth more than the 25cents - $1 they were selling them for! Of course also picked up the boxed sets mentioned in this thread.

I use to love these sets. Grew up opening these and learning about how good Carney Lansford and Ben Oglivie were!!
