April pickups

4 Attachment(s)
As many of you know, I am an advanced collector of no-hitter related items.
I recently picked up an oddball item related to 1965 Red Sox no-hit pitcher Dave Morehead- an original 1961 Commencement Exercises (Graduation) program from San Diego Herbert Hoover High School.

In doing my background research on Morehead I realized that he was an excellent multi-sport scholar athlete at Herbert Hoover HS and was drafted directly out of high school. Because of lack of depth in the Red Sox starting pitching roster, Morehead advanced quickly to the majors and was successful at hurling a no-hitter in 1965.
One other famous graduate from Herbert Hoover High was none other than HOF great Ted Williams.

The day that I received this program three weeks ago, I wrote a letter to Morehead asking if he would sign this program & inscribe it with his no-hitter date. When I looked up his address I was shocked to find that he now lives in a home less than 3 blocks from the home I grew up in! How weird is that?
I received it back in today's mail. :D

Scott, Great addition to your already impressive collection. Nothing about your collection surprises me any longer.

c. 1880s Ring Style Bat

5 Attachment(s)
This 36" ring bat is the most ornate I have ever had the pleasure of owning and looks even better in person. It was made by L.B. & Co. and is marked "Regulation" in gold lettering. While it just got started, if April ended right now I'd call it a success!

Great bat Jonathan. I love those "grain painted" bats and that one is a beauty.

Here's an uber-rare Football Statue I was fortunate to pick up recently. Truly spectacular in its detail, it is an original 1800s figural version of College Football's Walter Camp Award. The Walter Camp Award is second only to the Heisman, in terms of its lofty status...

http://www.picksixpreviews.com/walter-camp-award.html

Amazingly, this intricate 3 Man Statue portion is still in use today (see photo of Ricky Williams holding his Walter Camp Award). This is a completely finished piece, and the earliest known version of the prestigious sculpture. See pics below, with the latter versions being about 125 years older than Williams' Trophy!

Spectacular Mark, congrats! What's the history behind the statue? Sculptor? How do you date it to c.1875? Amazing pick up!!

Well, I was sorta "guesstimating" on the 125 years, and thought the Ricky Williams Photo may have been a few years more recent. But it came from Massachusetts, and was found with some other 1880s Yale paraphernalia.

As for Walter Camp himself... In 1873, he attended a meeting where representatives from Columbia, Rutgers, Princeton, and Yale universities created the intercollegiate football association (IFA). So given the evidence and accompanying items, the timing is likely somewhere in that 1870 - 1880 range... or thereabouts. If anyone has further evidence or insight (especially regarding the Sculptor), please share!

A final note... the materials, construction, and style of Base are all virtually identical to the Muller Baseball Statues of 1868. Same elongated oval base with textured surface. So I'm confident there's well over a century of age to it.

Thanks!

Love the piece, it's remarkable, but just so you know, wikipedia is wrong - in 1873 Walter Camp was 14 years old and did not attend the IFA meeting, he didn't enter Yale until 1876. Given the infancy of football at that time, the timing of the sculpture most likely not 1870s. Illustrators and sculptors, such as Frederic Remington and R.T. McKenize, started to be influenced by Camp's Yale Team's in the late 1880s and early 1890s. If Walter Camp influenced the original sculptor, logic would suggest the timing is more late 1880s to 1890s - regardless well over a century old.

Koufax program

2 Attachment(s)
I got this in the mail today, compliments of ebay.

It's a scored program from the Dodgers / Pirates game in LA on April 14, 1961, Koufax took the loss in his first appearance of the year (4th game for the Dodgers), giving him a career record of 36-41. Late in the game, Ron Perranoski made his major league debut, striking out the first batter he faced to end the 8th inning.

I now have scored programs for 200 Koufax regular season games. 85 wins, 43 losses, 6 saves, 66 no decision games.

197 more to go...
Doug

PS - I also have his 8 post season appearances.

Claude Passeau was different Baseball Magazine supplement #900 (both m113 & m114) for me. Mathewson was #901.

Those two spots towards the bottom right corner of each scan mean that I really need to clean my scanner.

I noticed that Mathewson on his left arm is wearing his uniform sleeve extension, while on his pitching arm he is not....as a Uni collector I find that interesting. I don't think I noticed that before.

Looks like April is off to another great start for the net 54 crew, great items guys. Was lucky enough to acquire this Ruth/Movie crossover item on the B S T board this week. Now have the suitcase in hand because of some extra effort by Marty the "Mighty Quinn", and it looks great for being 90+ years old. Once again another smooth 54 transaction because of great service and communication, much appreciated sir. Looking forward to researching this item, keep the posts coming fellas, always enjoy seeing the newest additions !

Mike - that Pirates picture is very cool. Happy birthday.

I had buy myself a birthday present, it's a scored program from the major league debut of Nate Colbert. He was a pinch runner, didn't bat, or play in the field, he did get to run from first to second base on a sac bunt. Unfortunately, I don't think that whoever kept score was aware that he came into the game.

Oh, and some other guy made his debut that day, too.

A pitcher for the Dodgers named Sutton. He lost. But, he did get two hits.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments on my Birthday present. I am a very blessed man. My father continued a 47 year baseball card tradition by buying me a pretty1961 Tops Mantle.

My wife and I met at 16 and have been together ever since. 38 years have flown by... at least for me. She has heard about the 1971 Bucs since 1979. She is my best friend and knows me better than I do. I have been blessed to have such an amazing life partner. My oldest daughter works for Alaska Airlines for my birthday she gifted me the Japan USA and USA Puerto Rico WBC games in Los Angeles. The only thing I love more than the silly game of baseball is my family. I am of Mexican heritage and my wife's family comes from Japan. Diversity is terribly important in our life. The 1971 Pirates and the WBC reflect that perfectly.

Doug, I am working on purchasing my own birthday present as I type this. Nate Colbert? Sh!!!!t a yellow and brown uniform coupled with mutton chop side burns and August 1, 1972 he was the man! Nate could have been an extra in Shaft... You see this cat Nate is a bad mother...shut your mouth. But I'm talkin' about Nate (Then we can dig it). He should have been a Buc.

Hey Joey that's another amazing addition to your growing collection.

Every now and then I take a break from baseball and add something out of the ordinary to my collection. Often, as in this instance, I add items that have no value or meaning to anyone but me. At 54 I am an avowed animal lover. However, the 15 year-old version of me was fascinated by the Bull Fights.

I spent many of my formative years living abroad in Europe and the Middle East. My parents traveled endlessly. As result I was introduced to many people and places that had a powerful impact on how I viewed the world then and now. During one of their adventures they took me Madrid’s Plaza de Toros. Comparing that Spanish Monument to our own Yankee Stadium would be an insult in the eyes of Spaniards. The reason for the visit was one of Spain’s most celebrated matadors El Cordobes (Manuel Benitez). In the 1960’s and early 1970s El Cordobes was to bull fighting what Muhammad Ali was to boxing, and what the Beatles were to music. I remember little of the day other than being fascinated with the noise and passion of crowd and the way he moved in the ring.

During my freshman year of high school I was sent to Madrid for boarding school. I spent every Sunday of the bull fighting season at Plaza de Toros. I read everything I could find about bull fighting including Benitez’s biography titled Or I Dress You in Mourning. His rise from a life of poverty, orphanages, and petty crime to become a national hero is a fascinating read.

Although I have no desire to ever attend another bull fight I still remain fascinated by El Cordobes. He was an unconventional matador and a flamboyant risk taker who survived many gorings. He was also a playboy who was said to have fought six bulls in the morning and enjoyed the company of six women at night. Nonetheless, I suppose he is my guilty pleasure. He serves to remind of a great year in my life. I picked up these four news photos of Benitez. Each photo depicts a different stage of his career from 1962 through 1981. Thanks for indulging me.

Here's a bobbing head doll that shouldn't exist. It is a factory marriage of a Seattle Raniers color base and a green base head. I started another thread of these dolls that were assembled from different parts. Hopefully, you guys have some to add.

Couldn't believe my luck when I found this uber rare Cubs pin on ebay:)

It's believed that these were not for public sale and were given to members of the organization at all levels around 1908-1915.

If anyone has knowledge of this piece, please share:)

Great pin, Congrats Mike! did they give out 1908 of them back then? ;) (that's a joke reference to WS rings thread).

condition looks amazing. any concern that they haven't started to repro these pins in the wake of all the Cubs hype?

Not concerned about this one Joe. I wouldn't put it past someone eventually, but it isn't marked with a date and is pretty obscure. You don't see them, so they aren't out there.

Congratulations that pin is very cool.

Agree... you can easily tell (when holding one of these in person) that it is antique and authentic. Great score!

Love the glove in this one. The Babe looks like he has not stretched and has no intention to. Ha

What's up Ben! I thought the Babe looked super grumpy in this photo.
