T206's....opinions on BIN prices??

Posted By: Dave
I'd like a feel for what everyone would tend to pay BIN for some of the following.

1. A common T206 card...lets say a Jack Knight portrait in a PSA 2

2. A common T206 card... a Ted Easterly in a PSA 2 with a Cycle 350 back

3. A southern leaguer in a PSA 2

4. A HOF such as a Fred Clarke portrait in a PSA 1?

5. A HOF such as a Mathewson portrait in a PSA 1?

Posted By: Martin Neal
Dave,

I would only buy individual cards if I needed them for my set. That being said, I would pay the following:

$35-$45 for vg graded commons
$45-$55 for vg graded commons with Cycle back
$40-$60 for good graded southern leaguers
$30-$60 for good graded minor hof's
$80-$140 for a fair graded Mathewson

I have probably bought over 1200 T205s and t206s over the last 4 years and less than 20 have been graded.

Posted By: Dylan
You seem to have a lot of posts inquiring about pricing. Why dont you sign up at vintagecardprices.com or cardpricer.com? There services track values for every card made thats been sold from 1867 to 1959 that is graded by PSA, GAI, SGC, and BVG. Cardpricer.com tracks raw cards as well.
If you go to www.T206.net you can even get auction prices for any T206 card for free.
These questions are kinda annoying as there are resources you can check first. If you need info on a card that has no data, then ask, but T206 pricing data is all over the place, you can even check Ebay past listings.

Posted By: Dave
I'm on vintagecardpricing.com ...it doesn't give any results for BIN's. And besides, I wasn't really looking for what the general public would pay for such, was moreso curious about the T206 lovers here...that know a bit more about what they are doing.

T206's....opinions on BIN prices??

Posted By: Dave
.........Buy the card, not the holder.

You're BIN question is subjective, because it really depends on what you're looking to do. Are you buying the cards as a long-term investment? To flip and make some quick money? or because you're a baseball history nut like most of us and enjoy collecting prewar cards?

There are times when I've paid more than I wanted to for a card and thought to myself - "am I crazy".....and then the card shows up, and I'm holding it and I forget all about how much it cost.

I've gotten plenty of good deals too over the past couple years, but it doesn't make me feel any better when I get that particular card. When the transaction is over, it's all about the piece of cardboard.

At the end of the day, it only matters how much you paid for a card if you plan on selling it one day. If you like the card, who cares if you pay a few bucks more than the next guy?

T206's....opinions on BIN prices??

Posted By: Dave
Well....I'm really not looking to buy any of the cards I mentioned as a long term investment or quick profit. I'm doing my best putting together a beater set, and all the categories would fall into that. The last thing I'm going to do is think of cards as long term investments..no way to predict that. Obviously there are cards I'll buy to flip (cards other than T206's, or T206's in higher grades than what I'm collecting). The question was just a random one thrown out there...I know everybody feels different about what each category is worth, and that was the purpose for the question...one guy may think a common PSA 2 is worth hardly anything..but he may like the southern leaguers and say he'd go $75 on a PSA 2......it was just a random thought I had this morning.

Dave

T206's....opinions on BIN prices??

Posted By: Martin Neal
Peter

I got started on t206s in 1988 or so. I bought a large group of them(125) for $100.00. They were all pretty beat. At the time, I really didn't know if I paid too much or what, but suspected that it was a pretty safe purchase. It wasn't until 2002 that I found Ebay and T206s in earnest. At that time, it was much easier to make large purchases of T206s on Ebay. If I remember correctly, I made at least 2 purchases of over 100 cards each and others of 10 to 20 cards each. Every year since then, I have tried to make large purchases either through Ebay or locally. It has worked for me. It has allowed me to upgrade my sets especially my t205 set and at the same time finance those purchases through the sale of the duplicates. Lately, it has been much harder to find large lots at a good price.
Here is the scan of a large lot that got away. I think it ended early around $2300.00. It was worth many times that.

Posted By: Dylan
Well Dave I really dont think the "general public" is buying T206 cards. Really T206 lovers, your words, are 99% of the time, the purchasers of T206 cards. Collectors gauge their cards value and what their willing to pay for them by the market. The people on this board buy cards on Ebay or other auction sites. Checking those auction prices IS checking what the fervent collectors are paying. There isn't a secret society(that i know of), or auction site, where T206 collectors meet and buy and sell at special prices.

Posted By: Dave
Any idea what ended up being the final price of that Piedmont lot from ebay you scanned? Shows there like six hours to go...would make me sick if 142 cards went for $610 and I didn't even know about it...lol

T206's....opinions on BIN prices??

Posted By: Martin Neal
Dave,

In reality, I don't know if the seller actually sold them. If I remember correctly, it ended with about an hour to go and I seem to recall it being in the mid $2000.00 range. It was for 242 t206s with 39 hofs including 3 Lajoies, 4 Mathewsons, 1 Johnson, 1 Young and cards like Pattee, Lundgren(chi.) and Kleinow.
I had talked to the seller on the phone earlier in the week to ask if I could see them in person (I live about 2 hours away). In hindsight I should have offered him what my snipe would have been, but, unfortunately, I took it from our conversation that he would probably let the auction run its course. I emailed him after the sale and got no response, I just took it to mean that someone had made him an offer that he thought would be more than the final number if the auction had gone through.
