1947 Bond Bread .........again.

Posted By: scott ingold
Did anybody turn up anymore info re: the issue of corners vs. rounded ? At the point the previous thread left off there was some in favor of them and one or two against. I have a dozen or so that i want to list and that have been graded but i would like some more info before putting them up.

Posted By: MW
My belief is that three distinct groups of Bond Bread cards exist:

1. Those which have rounded corners and were produced in 1947.

2. Those which have square corners and were produced in 1947 (but perhaps never meant for distribution).

3. Those which have square corners and were illegally reprinted.

The Standard Catalog somewhat blurs the distinction between groups 2 & 3 and according to various hobby sources, there are indeed valid reasons to believe that all square-corner cards might be illegally reprinted.

I tend to believe that some of the square-corner cards are legit as I've seen them in various states of wear in original collections. It is also my belief that there has been some fairly recently reprinting (even after the 1980s warehouse find) of the 1947 Bond Bread issue. As a result, if one is uncertain and wants to avoid the risk of acquiring relatively worthless reprinted cards, it is probably best to only purchase cards with rounded corners.

Posted By: scott ingold
Thanks MW,

But how should i feel about the one's graded by GAI ? These have the square corners and are legit according to them. Can i take that to the bank ? They supposedly had to bring in a specialist as an outside opinion.

1947 Bond Bread .........again.

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis
JULIE

Thank you for the perfect comparison.

I really hate to get started again....But, having a complete set of
the real 1947 Bond (48 - card) set with ROUNDED corners; and,
the 24 - card SQUARE issue, I have to reiterate that the SQUARE
cards are not the same as the originals. As a 9 year old, I collected
this set, they were my very first BB cards.I still have my original
48 cards and they are all ROUNDED. I clearly recall there were no
SQUARE cards issued in 1947.

Julie's examples clearly depicts the difference.

The ROUNDED cards are definitely sharper and are printed on white,
thicker cardboard. The SQUARE cards are of a lower printing quality
and are on thinner cardboard stock which has a tendency to discolor.

The argument that the SQUARE cards are simply un-ROUNDED, un-
circulated inventory from 1947 does not make sense. If this is so,
why haven't we ever seen a complete set of 48 cards in the SQUARE
version? Let's apply some basic common sense to this mystery. The
fact that only 24 cards exist in the SQUARE form tells me that these
24 were REPRINTED at some later date.
Posted By: Julie
They also erased MW's much more informative post between the first one and mine. Whart is going on. Anyway: One Reese, obviously original, but to me obviously corner-trimmed ny hand (this to me indicates thatr there were some original square-cornered Bond Breads, but that someone thought they had to be round cornered--and so, rounded them):
