Who is on Bill Carrick's E107?

I was discussing my recent post about my 1902-1903 team photo from Matty McIntyre's personal album with a few friends (hi Steve and Val), when it became clear that Bill Carrick's E107 is wrong.

Here is that thread: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=260108

The image of Carrick in my photo (below left) matches up really well with the photo of Carrick on the Baseball Almanac (center):

Carrick was on the McIntyre team as you will see in the previous thread, so I think we are safe to assume that my photo and the photo on the Baseball Almanac are correct.

The picture on his E107 (right), however, clearly isn't the same player.

I found the following 1902 Carl Horner piece which labels the E107 player as Carrick and could be the source of the confusion. (If you have a larger scan of this please let me know.)

E107 has been dated to a 1903-1904 issue. Carrick last played pro ball in 1902. He played in Toledo (AA) and Seattle (PCL) in 1903 and then did not play anywhere again until 1906 (according to Baseball Reference, who also uses the Horner photo of our mystery player for the Carrick entry).

The 1903 Washington W601 also doesn't appear to contain a photo of our mystery player.

(See LOTG for a better scan: http://loveofthegameauctions.com/190...lot12079.aspx#)

So, does anyone know the true identity of the player on Bill Carrick's E107?

Thanks in advance!

The players in the Horner composites had sat for their photos in the Horner studio in Boston, so it would be surprising if someone were misidentified. I am not aware of anyone else in a Horner composite being misnamed.

He is player #5 in the Spalding composite below. The face of player #5 resembles the face in the newspaper illustration that I've also attached, and I think both match the Horner photo.

Interesting, thanks RU. It seems to be there there is some evidence that both of these guys is Bill Carrick. I suppose that the guy that I initially thought was Carrick might be someone else even though there are several independent lines of evidence discussed in my thread that he is Carrick. Unfortunately Baseball Almanac does not have the contact info for the person that sent their Carrick photo to them (Nicole Shulters). I emailed a contact at the HOF and have been referred to their image department, so we will see if they can shed some light on this.

Well, I'm not sure what to say...I believe I told Bryan that I'm terrible at comparing photos of people, and I know that Val said he wasn't a pro at it either. :)

My only piece of advice was not to claim that the person in question is Joe Jackson. :D

I respect the opinions and information that people gather here though!
